Beschreibung

Joinery refers to both the wooden components of a building, and the techniques used for making those components. The craftsperson who does this is often considered a joiner, as he or she is one who joins pieces of wood together to construct something. Traditional Japanese joinery is made entirely without the use of metal fasteners or adhesives.

While building without the use of nails or other fasteners is not at all unique to Japan, the types of joints used, the durability of the structures created, and the complete absence of iron makes Japanese joinery stand out.

In this book “JAPANESE JOINERY GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS” I will be teaching you everything that you must know about this amazing wood working technique in order to be able to master this craft and improve on your woodworking skills.

In Japan however, complex methods of joinery are used not only for practical reasons, but also to highlight craftsmanship, and to enhance aesthetic quality. These decorative joints have often been used in temples, shrines, and castles, but are particularly common in furniture making.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION TO JAPANESE JOINERY

Centuries before screws and nails were invented, Japanese carpentry developed their own elegant and effective woodworking joints (referred to as joinery), which are intimately tied to Japanese architecture. It is the process of securely fitting pieces of timber or lumber together in order to hold them together and create more sophisticated things. Due to the intricately carved interlocking wooden joints, joinery does not require materials such as sewing, glue, or nails.

The advantages of Japanese joinery are their extreme durability, toughness, flexibility, visual attractiveness, and material efficiency. These features vary according to the properties of the materials used and the intended use of the joint, with numerous varieties of joinery available to satisfy a variety of requirements. For instance, the joinery used in the construction of a house is distinct from that used in the manufacture of furniture, although some joinery designs do overlap.

Japanese architecture appears to be deliberately basic. Their aesthetics harmonize development with nature, but the procedures used to construct the structures are unique and complicated, relying on joinery creativity to create non-nail or bolted constructions.

Japanese Joinery

Japanese wood joints are the bedrock of the country's magnificent temples, residences, and cabinetry, which are all created using joinery techniques that are still studied by contemporary architects. These designs are able to use joinery that does not require steel nails but still provides a strong internal structure for large buildings, while also exhibiting incredible visual constructs within the room's ceilings.
