About the Author

Hi, I am Paul Lawrence Vann, the founder and President of Wealth Building Academy, LLC. I lead an educational and business management consulting company with the mission of developing leaders through keynote speeches, leadership development workshops, digital courses, coaching, books, YouTube, and podcasts. I served over twenty years in the United States Air Force (USAF) in various leadership positions over the course of my military career in my capacity as a military officer.

Eight years into my military career, I separated from the USAF and pursued my lifelong dream of working for a Fortune 500 company. I was recruited by and worked for Mobil Oil Company for two years as a financial analyst in Beaumont and Houston, Texas. A couple of years later, I received a call from the Pentagon and was recalled to the USAF and I was assigned to the Pentagon for over twelve consecutive years.

During my duty at the Pentagon, I worked directly with general officers in the USAF, Air National Guard (ANG), and the National Guard Bureau (NGB). Whether it was assisting with foreign military sales (FMS) training programs, negotiating with foreign governments in their embassy, or escorting ANG general officers to brief members of the Senate and House Armed Services Committee, I gained valuable leadership experience, knowledge, and skills.

What assisted me along my leadership journey was attending every leadership school the USAF had to offer, and it played a pivotal role in me being competitively selected and participating in the Capitol Hill Fellowship program. It was an honor to work for a member of Congress assigned to the House Armed Services Committee in the United States House of Representatives.

I am truly honored to have retired from the USAF with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Upon retirement, I became a professional speaker, trainer, and author. For over nine years, I hosted the Wealthy Speaker Talk Radio Show and produced over eight hundred episodes. I am also the author of Living on Higher Ground and Faith For Times Like Now.

Today, I host the YouTube Channel, Leadership Is Influence and Wealth Academy Podcast that can be found on YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts. Through hard work and dedication, I earned a B.A. in Business from Shaw University, an M.A. in Business Management from Central Michigan University, and an M.S. in Contracts and Acquisition Management from Florida Institute of Technology.

Why I Wrote This Book

A new dynamic is taking place in the workforce as a result of the recent pandemic, and it is this, the workforce and workplace is changing, and it will never be like they used to be. The pandemic required that businesses shutter their doors and employees work from home.

As a result of the shift brought on due to health concerns, businesses and organizations of all kinds and industries used technology to get things done as best they could. Several virtual platforms became tools of choice, and they are here to stay.

The greatest challenge businesses are facing today is coordinating hybrid work structures, meaning some employees will work in their physical offices for a set number of days and work from home on the other days. The hybrid arrangement is what employees want because they demand more flexible work arrangements because it offsets the hassle of traffic, expenses associated with using a metro train or bus, it cuts down on stress, and carpooling.

Another major challenge for businesses involves retaining top talent. Some employees would rather quit their job, rather than return to the workplace they occupied prior to the pandemic; they simply want more control of their lives.

What I want you to take from Leadership Is Influence, is for you to become a better leader than you are today. I also want you to understand you do not have to have the title of a leader to be a leader as an employee or as a manager, which is not the top leadership position at most companies.

As you are reading this book, understand that it will provide you with a three-pronged approach to becoming a more valuable asset to your organization through leadership development. In fact, when an organizational leader develops other leaders in the organization to become leaders of influence, the organization performs at a higher level of performance, and it develops a competitive advantage over its competition. Apply what you learn from this book and here is to your success.

Dedication

This book is dedicated to all of my ancestors, and I thank them for everything they did from the shores of Africa to their journey to America. I know my ancestors prayed for me and it is why my life and that of my children, Paula and Paul, Jr continue to be so amazing.

I never met my maternal grandfather Phillip Hawkins. I learned about him from my grandmother, Annie Bell Hawkins. He passed away before I was born. I met my paternal grandfather, Samuel Vann. I was a pre-teen when he passed away. He was married to my grandmother, Ida Mae Yarborough Vann.

It goes without saying that I provide a salute to my parents, Martha, and Edward Cecil Vann. My sister Gloria Jean Vann and my brother Eugene Vann left the earthly realm too soon, and we miss them. I also dedicate this book to my siblings: Jacqueline, John, Joan, Michael, Cynthia, Andre, and Tonya and all of my nieces and nephews.

I also give honor to my great aunt, Carrie Marable, who taught in a school in our hometown of Henderson, North Carolina for over thirty years. Great Aunt Carrie encouraged me to always acquire knowledge because it would lead me to places I never thought possible, and she was right.

I also give honor to my aunts, Ruth Hawkins Harris, Carolyn Hawkins Chism, Anita Vann Rogers, and Emma Lou Vann Harris.

I would be remiss if I did not provide a shout-out to my nephew, Xavier (Peter) Vann, who is gone too soon. Every one of the people I have listed had an impact on my life and there are more, and I will acknowledge them in my next book.

Chapter 1

The Myth Of Being A Born Leader

Before I start helping you become a good leader and ultimately a leader of influence, I need to clear up some things. I am going to start with the myth of someone being a born leader; this needs to be cleared up, so you understand what this book entails.

We can mutually agree at some time or another in our life, we have heard someone say, someone is a born leader. The conversation may have been about a star football player, a captain of industry, a politician, or a spiritual leader.

I am sure over the course of your life you have heard, read, or seen someone bring up the concept of a born leader, and sometimes when we hear this, we do not give it a second thought. Perhaps, you hear a sports commentator refer to an athlete as a born leader, or a newscaster, or friends sitting around having fun, as they are watching a sports event, it gives them something to talk about.

Even though we may have heard someone is a born leader, know that it is a myth. It is important to understand that in order to become a good leader, it takes a lot more than someone just stating someone else is a born leader. I will take this one step further, in order to become a leader of influence, it takes even more work for it to happen.

People who state that an athlete, a business leader, and or a politician is a born leader, make these kinds of statements to fill space in their conversations. What some people allude to is nothing more than charisma, and or they have a flair for doing what they do. The fact of the matter is, when it comes to someone being a born leader, it is simply an opinion with no facts to back it up. Myths exist and the born leader myth happens to be one of the most frequently discussed, though it is prevalent during some conversations, it has no merit.

For example, in my life, I have heard people say the quarterback for a professional team is taking his team to the Super Bowl. They go one step further by stating, he is a born leader. You and I both know that when a child is born and arrives in the world, they do not have shoulder pads on, nor are they born with a football in their hand.

The born leader myth makes for good conversation for those who include it in their conversations, but it lacks any substance whatsoever. Let us call it what it is, a born leader is a myth, and it is an opinion at best.
