What is Meditation?

Meditation means perceiving yourself as a space where thoughts, feelings and everything else come and go.

Meditation is not about doing something to achieve something else, including enlightenment. Meditation is a special state of consciousness that is about not wanting to achieve anything at all, as opposed to everyday life, but simply being for once and thereby finding inner peace.

You are like a pond at the bottom of which lies a pearl. As long as the water is agitated, you perceive only the restlessness of the water, but the more it comes to rest, the clearer it becomes and the deeper you can see into it.

The pearl is the precious beauty of your soul, and you can see it, as soon as you have calmed the churning waves of your feelings and thoughts in the pond of your consciousness through the tranquility of meditation.

Paramhansa Yogananda once used the beautiful image of buried treasure for the discovery of our inner self, which we can access as we penetrate deeper and deeper layers of our self through the spades of our meditation.

Why meditate?

Normally you are in mental activity all day long and even at night your brain continues to work as you process your day's experiences in your dreams. During meditation your mind can finally rest. Instead of being busy with the usual flood of impressions that your senses constantly give you, through meditation you can relax, experience yourself more and more deeply, and over time find more and more inner peace. As a result, you deal with life more calmly, can concentrate better, and are altogether clearer, more centered, and more creative.
