Dear friend, if you happen to come across a Josette on your path, expect to have an unforgettable experience, just like Lucinda.

On a beautiful spring day, Lucinda moped around the house, looking out of the kitchen window. Her usually cheerful nature had become crabby. Her amiable smile had disappeared and her melancholy look wringed her parent’s heart.

“Go visit your friends, it will reawaken your taste for playing.” her mother told her.

But Lucinda refused because she was far too sad.

Since Black, her small dog, had disappeared, she had lost her zest for life. Her parents were very attentive to her, but to no avail. Lucinda was not able to blot out the recollection of her best playmate.

However, on that day, she felt a sudden desire to go out. Was it the nice weather that incited her to be outdoors? Not able to resist any more, she put on her hat, her new socks and laced up her sneakers. In a rucksack, she made sure to put a snack and her flute. It reminded her of her wanderings with Black, her small black and white cocker spaniel. The sun was already high in the sky, but she had decided to remain outside until she had her complete fill of fresh air. For that matter, her mother had enticed her to go for a walk in the countryside so that she got a healthier complexion.

Instinctively, she went to the village fountain. She had very often sat on the bench across it. She was happy to take up her old ways, although she felt a little apprehension. “How long shall I remain on the bench now that Black is not with me any more?”

As she sat a clear voice began to sing:

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And I know your sadness,

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And we’re going to have fun!

Lucinda was confused for a few moments, wondering if she had heard correctly. The clear voice resumed unabated:

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And I know your sadness,

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And we’re going to have fun!

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And who loves me, ’ll follow me.

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock

And I know how to amuse hearts!

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock

You put me on your second foot.

I’m Josette, your brand-new sock,

And we’ll go this way.

Lucinda answered quite dejectedly:

“Nobody will ever replace Black in my heart. You can use your best imagination to tempt me, thinking of my dog will always make me sad. And also, who are you? Is that you on my foot, which is called Josette? And which foot, the right or the left one?”
