This tale is dedicated to those who fail to find their place in life
In a small village by the Guermente river lived a strange family. The father, a cobbler, only worked when he really felt like it, which was not very often. He occupied his long moments of idleness by stepping into his boat and going fishing from early morning till dark. He sometimes even forgot to eat.
The mother, who did not like housework, would go pilfering to get food during the day and bring fruit back home. Before they left, the father required from the boys that they do the gardening, cut the wood for the stove and prepare the vegetables, while the mother assigned the girls all the chores of the house—the cooking, the cleaning, the washing and the ironing. At least, they would be sure the children would be very busy and that the meal would be ready upon their return. With all the chores they had to carry out, they would get very hungry by the end of the day. The mother was the only one who could satiate her hunger during her wanderings of the day.
One day, tired from rinsing the linen in the river, Caroline, the eldest of the girls, seated herself for a few moments. She was complaining loudly about her and her siblings’ sad fate, when a funny little man appeared.
“You look so sad. I’d be delighted if I could help you with anything. I don’t like to see sad people. I’m a gay dog myself. I am the goblin.”
Seeing his funny face, Caroline burst out laughing. It had been quite a while since she had laughed like that.
“In fact, since you are so tiny, I should be the one offering you help!
“Certainly I am small, but I know how to do many things that would surprise you.”
He then did a pirouette that amused Caroline again. Seeing how happy she was, the goblin carried on, making an exhibition of himself. Caroline laughed so hard that she almost got a stomach ache.
As soon as it got dark, the goblin disappeared into tufts of grass. Caroline had not finished rinsing her laundry. How could she manage before her parents’ return home? She got started, but her muscles were tensed and her whole body was aching, especially her tummy. She was not too confident in the dark. What if she dropped the linen in the river? How would she pick it up? Accordingly, she decided to hide all the linen in the middle of a bush and go back home. She would finish her task tomorrow.
It got dark very quickly, and as a result, she got lost on her way back. Her steps had taken her to the entrance of a cavern. If this was the one her parents often talked about when they wanted to punish them, she had lost her way in a seedy area. She panicked and began to shiver all over.
