Does artificial intelligence really present a disruptive change for us – for our lives, business and companies?
In short, yes.
Absolutely yes!
I firmly believe AI presents one of the largest changes that we as people have experienced in our long history.
And I firmly believe that how companies are being led and managed will also change profoundly.
How can I state the above so firmly? Do I own a crystal ball that enables me to see into the future?
Well, for full disclosure, I do not own a crystal ball, and neither can I see in the future.
But I can try to answer the question… In order to do it, we will need to look a bit into the history – both of people and our evolvement as a civilization as well as how modern organizations (companies and other institutions), which lead and steer our progress today, evolved themselves and their management through the history.
industrial revolutions
We are currently at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution1, which was a term coined in 2015 by Klaus Schwab, founder of World Economic Forum. This original term had a focus on Industry 4.0, powered primarily by increasing interconnectivity and smart automation in the industrial environment.
Personally, I am convinced that the fourth industrial revolution is not the smart industry revolution as originally defined. I believe that the fourth industrial revolution is actually the AI revolution. While the AI revolution will also include advancements in the industrial environment, it will bring many more significant changes in other areas, including how companies and businesses operate and what we people do for our livelihoods.
People have progressed over history and evolved not only because of our ability to adapt (one of key traits that enabled modern humans to become winners and leaders of evolution), but also because of our ability to make (innovative) tools and use those tools (innovatively) to our advantage.
During the period of the last 3 centuries (from the second half of 18th century till today), our civilization experienced several major developments (from the first to the fourth industrial revolution2), which resulted in not only incremental changes of our lives and the way we do business but presented huge changes that were felt not only in business but also in our society and the way we live our lives. Scientific progress enabled industrial progress with business and companies, which are powered by profit and capital, as the driving forces behind this progress.
The first industrial revolution3 started in the second half of 18th century (from 1760 onwards) and presented the transition to new manufacturing processes. These transferred from hand production methods to machines, including new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, and included increasing use of waterpower and steam power, the development of machine tools, and the rise of the mechanized factory system. The first Industrial revolution facilitated significant change of our civilisation's social structure, with the main change being a transition from farm work to factory-related activities. The hierarchical social status of individuals became important and was defined by an individual's economic power. The family system also changed as most people moved into cities, with extended family living apart becoming more common. Additionally, it also facilitated a shift of the role of women in society from solely being the primary caregivers to being breadwinners as well, which also led to a reduced number of children per household.
