Enjoy a wonderful view, especially in the morning, from the 96.4 meters high Röthelberg.

The wealth of Mecklenburg’s Switzerland involves countless tree-lined avenues…

… beech forests…

INTRODUCTION

When we tell our friends of Mecklenburg’s Switzerland, everyone can find it on the map by now. Most of them have spent a vacation here. This was not always the case.

The “Switzerland”, as we call this spot lovingly, exerts a special fascination on us. It all started one spring morning, when we headed north for a photography assignment and were met by a gem.

The pronounced cultural landscape has been created since the end of the last ice age, the Weichselian glaciation in Scandinavia and northern Europe, roughly 10,000 years ago. The landscape is marked by moraine ranges and a multitude of lakes. The Nature Park Mecklenburg’s Switzerland and Lake Kummerow now consist of 19 percent forest and 10 percent water surfaces. In April, the yet sparse forests are covered with a carpet of anemones and other spring flowers. The flowers have to hurry. As soon as the old giant trees unfold their leaves, the floor darkens again. Lake Kummerow, with the river Peene near Demmin, forms the northern edge of the area, nestled between narrow ridges.

You can observe local sea eagles and other birds of prey, which spend the summer in “Switzerland”, by various platforms. Migrating cranes impress in the fall. Take a so-called beaver boat trip from the Hanseviertel Demmin and, with a little luck, experience the furry companions in their native habitat in the wild.
