“Unless we remember, we cannot understand”

E.M. Forster

Introduction

Memory is an essential part of a person's life. Our memories are formed through an efficient process that follows three fundamental steps:

Coding - when information arrives and is recorded.Storage - the phase in which that information is stored in specific spaces within the mind.Recovery - the moment in which the recall of memory is activated.

Unfortunately, our kids forget things regularly – particularly when it comes to tasks they’re not interested in, such as homework. I’ve noticed this when teaching my son. On one occasion, when we were solving a few math problems, I explained each step to my nine-year-old son. He paid attention and listened carefully, and appeared to understand everything I told him. However, when it came to putting his knowledge to the test, he couldn’t seem to recollect a thing.

"Remember? We just solved this together," I said, exasperated. But it was no good; everything I’d said had gone in one ear and out the other!

This is a typical scenario for most kids these days. Children aged between 5 and 10 struggle to focus on one thing. There are too many distractions – TV, the internet, and endless toys, which makes it difficult for them to focus on what they are supposed to be doing at any given moment. Their minds continuously drift towards the nearest distraction.

Does your little one also struggle to remember things? While it’s true that we all forget things from time to time, kids seem to forget things more often.

What’s more, there is a common misunderstanding about memory and how it affects learning. You may believe that a "great memory" is something that your kid naturally has or doesn't have. If you believe this, it follows that there is little you can do to help your child improve.

Well, that isn’t true! There are lots of ways you can assist your kid with improving their memories. This book will share the procedures and strategies that will allow you to strengthen your child's memory and support them with accomplishing consciousness that sticks.

As we all know, memory is a significant block when it comes to building a strong foundation for learning, both at home and at school. Having an extraordinary memory can help your kid succeed in the classroom, perform well on tests, and accomplish better evaluations.

Researchers have found that 10-15% of children aged 4-11 in the United States are battling low working memory capacity (Holmes et al., 2009; Fried et al., 2016). Low memory adversely affects how kids learn. Those with low memory capacity are easily distracted when there are interruptions. It can also affect how well they perform on tests, including exams at school and IQ tests. The effects of poor memory are not confined to childhood, but can extend into adulthood.

A kid's memory is like a computer database. Their memory can only find things within the database. As such, all the information must be entered and saved first.

Like adults, a child’s memory stores facts, sensory experiences (sounds, tastes, smells, touch sensations, what they see), and emotions.

Using our memories is like storing records in various folders on your PC with the goal of being able to find them more effectively when you need them. If you don't document things appropriately, or you save them in the wrong folder, or you can't recall your password, then you could end up in a tough situation!

Sharp memory abilities aren't something that kids are brought into the world with. Rather, these abilities develop and improve the more they are utilized. Like any other skill, careful preparation and training bring about promising results.

To become the master of memory, it is essential to ensure that your little ones are consistently working their memorization muscles. You can encourage your kids to practice their memory skills and to access stored information when they need it.

So, if your child finds it difficult to spell a particular word, try to give their memory more than one method of remembering. You can do this by asking them to use more than one sense (touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell) or by using visualization (say viz-u-al-eye-zay-shun).

You must be wondering by now how you are going to accomplish all these techniques to sharpen your child's brain. No need to panic! It's hard, but not impossible.

I have compiled this book to provide you with a comprehensive guide, where you are going to learn the best methods and approaches to improve your child's memory, such as:

Making learning engaging for your kid by having conversations about a wide range of topics and involving them in discussions.Assisting them with creating basic reasoning abilities while improving memory power.Playing focus games and activities to facilitate attention.Providing your kid with the right tools to improve their abilities.Setting up a distraction-free environment.Helping your child develop a growth mindset.Chipping away at visualization abilities.

And above all, this book will show you how to be persistent! This may be the hardest part. However, if you want your child to progress, you must empower them and downplay emotional stress, no matter how frustrated you might feel!

It’s also important to stick to a pace that suits your child. If they struggle to keep up with you, this adds another layer of pressure that taxes memory even more. Stress causes the brain’s intake frameworks to send data into the “reactive” brain, which is programmed to do one of the following: fight, flight, or freeze. It forestalls data flow through the “reflective” brain (prefrontal cortex), where long-term memory is built.

This suggests that creating high-pressure circumstances will hurt your child's memory. To avoid this, arrange pleasant activities, such as learning with rhymes, fun games, or with pictures. These types of activities will not only destress the learning experience, but will also open up the brain channels that lead to memory build-up.

With this book to hand, you will learn how to be patient and work towards improving your kid's memory in ways that are both fun and engaging!

As a mother, I realize how tough it can be to train your kid’s brain! We might want them to be perfect, but that's not possible – all we can do is try our best!

This book draws on a range of learning resources, as well as on my personal experiences of being a parent, with the purpose of showing you how to improve your kid's memory and help them succeed in life. The following chapters focus on specific ways to accomplish these goals without tearing your hair out!

Remember, everything will work out in the end. Trust the process. Trust your child.

So, are you ready to begin learning the most effective ways to support your kid's memory? From memory-boosting foods to fun games and activities, I've assembled strategies that you can attempt at home starting today!

The best thing is, these techniques and methods are pretty straightforward! So, let's dive right in and see which of these simple strategies works for you and your kid!
