Before delving into this collection, understand that there is no singular path towards achieving fulfillment and success in your endeavors. Our stories are unique to us, but the lessons embedded within them are universal. These are my personal accounts, anecdotes, observations, and learnings I have discovered within, and applied to, my own musical journey and my life. The format of this collection is intentionally flexible; read linearly or chase serendipity and turn to any random page. I truly believe the lessons in this book will profoundly and positively amplify your creativity. Enjoy your craft, enjoy your life, and share them with those you cherish and love.
Music, as all things creative, is a reaction; an elaboration on our experience, a response to transpired events. Every single piece of music is a direct, emotional expression of its creator’s life stories. Every individual is unique in this expression, yielding exclusive composition, tonality, vibe, and performance. Your expression is yours. Your expression is alive. Reflect on your experiences, your self, and share your stories with the world.
The inherent beauty in music is that it is alive; it is unique to the individual listener and creator. Every single consumer will interpret the medium differently than the next; we all process sound waves uniquely, relative to our natural and nurtural background. An atonal chord might sound harsh to one, red to another, beautiful to the third, and so on and so forth. Discovering your voice is subject to your background; you will explore your responses relative to your feelings in the moment and through an unconscious catharsis compounded over time and experience. Embrace and respect this fundamental tenant of the art; you will realize its omnipotence and you will create with intention and truth. Let it flow through you, let go of your control and ego, and your experience, your art, will shine.
Hardware failure is real. Fault-tolerance is critical for a smooth performance. Seasoned musicians know this well, but we are all human and we forget; we make mistakes. So, when you are debating what to throw in your gig bag, bring those extra sets of strings, rosin, drumsticks, reeds, tubes, instrument cables, power supplies. You will be glad you did when something inevitably goes haywire.
It is our duty to ourselves and to our fellow musicians to learn the material; a mutual self-respect and respect of our peers. Music is foundational in the sum of its parts. All components should be sturdy and sound to allow for the creative evolution to develop. When we all internalize our contributions to the tune, a new universe of possibilities opens for exploration.
Being nice will bring you great things in life; opportunity, happiness, friendship, love…the reciprocity is innumerable. We attract that which we expel. Musicians generally hire people who are a joy to be around; act accordingly and you are in the running. If you are rude and a drag to be around, good luck finding work!
Balancing the ego is one of life’s most difficult, yet rewarding struggles. Awareness of our behavior and actions towards others keeps the ego in check. People remember and reward kindness. Positivity is infectious, it radiates and attracts. Negativity, arrogance, and narcissism is toxic and repels. You will live a more fulfilling life if you actively practice humility. You will continue to grow, rather than assume you have reached your limits. You will be presented with opportunities rather than outcast by your community. Be nice, be kind, be humble.
Our musical journey should follow a positive progression. The willingness to be fearless in the unknown is development and evolution; we unlock new possibilities and perspective, absorbing knowledge and improving our foundation. Those who maintain openness continue to live and grow; those who choose to close the mind and let fear dictate their decisions are the walking dead.
Whatever you create, always ensure your intent is genuine. The defining characteristics of great art are raw emotion and powerful expression; traits that cannot be fabricated nor replicated with disingenuous intent. Your audience will be able to see through any work that appears disingenuous or thoughtless, unorganized or hollow. Always create with truth. Success and fulfillment will follow, and your art will flow seamlessly.
