Beschreibung

A LITTLE
HISTORY
The origins:
a housing development
Güell and Gaudí conceived this park located
within a natural area. They imagined an
organised group of high-quality homes, decked out
with all the latest technological advancements
to ensure maximum comfort, with an artistic
finishing touch.
They also envisioned a community strongly
influenced by symbolism, as they tried to capture
many of the political and religious ideals
shared by both the patron and the architect in its
communal elements.

PARK GÜELLS MAP
The park was originally part of a
commercially unsuccessful housing
estate, the idea of Count Eusebi
Güell, after whom it was named. It
was inspired by the English garden
city movement; hence the original
name is Park. The site was a rocky
hill with little vegetation and few
trees, called Muntanya Pelada
(Bare Mountain).
The aim was to exploit the fresh air
(well away from the smoke and
factories) and beautiful views of
the city, with sixty triangular lots
for luxury houses.

Count Eusebi Güell increased the prestige of the
development by moving to the Park in 1906. He turned
the old mansion (Casa Larrard), which was already
there when he bought the land for development, into his
main residence. Ultimately, only two houses were built,
neither designed by Gaudí. One was intended to be a
show house but upon completion in 1904 it was put up
for sale and, as no buyers came forward, at Güell's
suggestion Gaudí bought it with his savings and moved
in with his family and his father in 1906.

After the death of the Count, Park Güell was sold to
Barcelona City Council for use as a public park.
In 1984 it was listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
THE ROUTE
Since 2013 access to the PARK GÜELL
MONUMENTAL ZONE has been regulated
to guarantee the conservation of the site.
Before visiting, I recommend booking
online to avoid unnecessary queues, both
for the monumental zone and the GAUDÍ
HOUSE MUSEUM.
Entry to the area of the MAIN
ROADWAY, the VIADUCTS and the
VIEWPOINTS is unrestricted and free
of charge. There are different access
points to the park, so the route can also
vary. Park Güell is designed following
a HIGHLY DETAILED GLOBAL CONCEPT,
so we will always get this impression,
regardless of the order of visit.
I have planned a route in which we
willfirst visit the MONUMENTAL ZONE,
the HOUSE MUSEUM and, afterwards,
the OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST outside
the protected area.

ACCESS POINTS TO THE PARK
Although it has more than one access point,
I have chosen the one near the metro (green
line-L3, Vallcarca). It is the most exhausting
(even with the escalator) although I think it's
the most beautiful.
It is worth turning around to see the view
of the Baixada de la Glòria from the last
section. It promises something special.

Don't miss this entrance. It provides a good panoramic view of the city
and leaves you in a setting surrounded by nature. The sinuous paths
reveal Park Güell magically appearing among the trees, offering a
glimpse of some of its characteristic forms.
