Often in sports we talk about four factors for the perfect performance: physic, technique, tactic and mindset. Every athlete knows how to train your physic, technic and even tactic but it´s unfortunately only a few who knows how to train your mindset. That is the most important factor if you want to achieve your goals.
The three different brain moods
We have three different moods in the brain, the primitive brain, intellectual brain and the performance state.
The primitive mood is bad for your performance, you can’t perform good with this mood, you become angry (not a good anger), focus on wrong things, get bad concentration, feel sick and uncomfortable. You will also think negative: “We will never win” “I’m not as good as I was”. The primitive brain was important a long time ago, when we needed to escape from dangerous situations, the instinct is to not die. The vision will be affected too. If you were in danger and a tiger was hunting you then you would only see were to run and nothing else. So when you play football and your primitive brain is active your vision will be much worse than normal. You will miss the run your teammate takes. One more bad thing is that you will burn your energy faster, because you have to much adrenaline and cortisone.
The next mood, the intellectual brain will make you feel calm, your thinking is positive and solution focused, good for recovery, high confidence, sleep well, low heart rate and you will not be so emotional like when the primitive brain is active. This mood is perfect for you to live your life off the pitch. When you are with friends or family and are happy, the intellectual brain is probably active. If you always have the primitive brain active off the pitch, it will almost be impossible to perform good on the pitch. So if you can control the intellectual brain off the pitch then your performance will be better on the pitch.
The performance state is like a power button. Your focus become better, you feel strong, thinking quicker, get better motivation and drive, higher self-belief and decision making becomes better. The performance state is the intellectual brain controlling the primitive brain, so it is important the primitive being controlled. The question is how to activate the performance state.
Here are a few things that athletes have said works.
Concentration. When athletes have been interviewed about being into the performance state they have described they have a clear focus a few hours before performance.
Cleargoals. You need to know what to do before the game and have goals in the game.
Control. You need the right thoughts for example, “I can’t lose” “Everything I do is right”.
Noself-criticism. You can’t criticise yourself you need to believe in what to do.
