Foreword

Dear readers

Welcome to "Psoriasis under control: Natural ways to healthy skin". This book is a source of inspiration, hope and practical guidance for anyone living with psoriasis.

As someone who deals with patients affected by psoriasis on a daily basis, I know the challenges, fears and frustrations that this skin condition can bring. The unpleasant symptoms such as redness, scaling and itching can not only cause physical discomfort, but also affect self-confidence and quality of life.

But let me tell you: there is hope! In this book we will explore the fascinating world of natural therapies for psoriasis. We will look at herbal remedies, nutrition, stress management and other holistic approaches that can help you improve your skin health and live a fulfilling life.

I want to emphasise that "Psoriasis under control" is not a medical manual or a miracle cure. Every person is unique and psoriasis can vary from person to person. Nevertheless, I would like to present you with a treasure chest of insights, experiences and research results that can help you alleviate your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

I invite you to embark on this journey and discover the power of natural therapies. Take the time to explore and apply the information and advice in this book.

Remember that it is important to have patience and perseverance as the changes will not happen overnight. But I am confident that you will make progress on your journey to healthy skin and a fulfilling life.

I wish you success, inspiration and above all, positive change. May you use this book as a valuable companion to take control of your psoriasis and live a life full of confidence and joy.

On a personal note:

Since the entire Quantum-satis series is created outside of my working hours, in the evening hours, I have put the focus on the content and not the design. The aesthetes may forgive me for this!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to

to my dear colleague Tine van Loon, alternative practitioner in Xanten, for her valuable and friendly exchange, both professionally and emotionally.

to my patients, who have shared their suffering with me and are the basis for everything...!

and of course to my loving partner Reiner, who always inspires and supports me in my writing, opens up new perspectives and always gives me valuable tips and assistance ... my "Cherie": my muse & inspiration with heart, mind & creativity, so to speak.

I have deliberately refrained from advertising or support from pharmaceutical companies in order to be able to write independently about medical, pharmaceutical or naturopathic topics, not only now but also in the future.

Beyond that I am of course grateful for every small Paypal coffee donation to [email protected].

But it is even nicer this way: as a small thank you when I could help someone! You are welcome to send a few kind lines, and especially a little feedback by email on the individual course of the disease or the healing process.

It is thanks to the feedback from my patients that my knowledge about many serious diseases has developed over the past 35 years. Without this willingness to share sometimes very intimate and private topics with me, none of this would be possible.

Therefore, I am sure that I will also receive positive feedback from you, my dear readers, in the future, which I can then use for the benefit of other patients,

I would like to thank you very much in advance,

Yours

Christiane Billen

"In der Mitte der Schwierigkeiten liegt die Möglichkeit.“

Albert Einstein

(literal translation: “In the middle of difficulties you will find the possibility.“)

This quote from Albert Einstein reminds us that even in the midst of challenges and obstacles, there are possibilities and solutions to be found - or just there, we should only look, feel inside ourselves!

This also applies to psoriasis and the search for effective treatments. The history of medicine is marked by researchers, doctors and scientists who have worked tirelessly to understand and treat diseases.

From Hippocrates to modern medicine, we have gained a wealth of knowledge and understanding that can help us manage psoriasis. This includes naturopathy with its roots that sometimes go back centuries or more.

1. Introduction - the hidden burden of psoriasis

1.1 What can you expect in this book?

Dear readers,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to this book about psoriasis, its treatments and ways of coping. Psoriasis, also known as „lichen dandruff“ (hopefully the translating is correct), is a complex and often stressful disease that affects the lives of sufferers in many ways. But I want to assure you that there is hope.

In the history of medicine, we have made tremendous progress, both in our understanding of psoriasis and in the treatment options available to us. From the ancient wisdom of Hippocrates to the latest findings of modern research, doctors, scientists and patients have worked tirelessly to find better ways to treat and manage this condition.

This book is designed to help you realise the full potential of available treatments and develop strategies for managing psoriasis. Together we will explore the different aspects of this condition, from the medical background to practical advice for everyday life. You will gain insights into the latest scientific findings and benefit from the experiences of other sufferers.

But let me emphasise: This book is more than a collection of information and advice. It is a guide to help you navigate your personal journey with psoriasis. Each person is unique, and therefore the treatment and management of psoriasis requires an individual approach. You will discover tools and strategies to help you manage your symptoms, increase your self-confidence and live a fulfilling life.

At the request of many readers of the first and German editions, the second edition has now been supplemented with concrete recipe examples for cooking, so that the valuable nutrition tips can also be implemented directly. The very important topic of the intestinal microbiome has also been intensified and underpinned with further exciting results from current research.

I encourage you to consider this book as your companion. Dive into the world of psoriasis, explore the different treatment options and take charge of your health. Understand that you are not alone - there is a large community of people who share similar experiences and support each other.

Thank you for taking the time to read this book.

I sincerely hope that it provides you with valuable information, inspiration and support. Let us walk the path of coping together and not let psoriasis rule our lives. Together we can overcome the challenges and live a full and happy life.

2. What exactly is psoriasis - the „lichen dandruff"?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is noninfectious and caused by various factors.

It can also affect other organ systems, especially the joints, and can be associated with various comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and depression. This means it can also be a systemic disease.

Psoriasis is widespread and affects about 2% of the population in Germany, as well in the United States. Interestingly, men and women are equally affected. A familial cluster has also been observed, suggesting that there may be a genetic predisposition to the condition.

Many factors play a role in psoriasis, including genetic predisposition, environmental factors, the immune system and inflammatory processes.

These factors lead to an accelerated production of skin cells, which then accumulate on the skin surface and form silvery-white scales. This process is associated with inflammation, which can cause redness, itching and sometimes pain.

Although psoriasis is a long-term condition, there are many treatment options that can help patients control their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Treatment may include topical creams, light therapy, systemic medications or a combination of approaches. It is important that patients receive individualised treatment, as not every therapy is equally effective for everyone.

Research into psoriasis has made great strides in recent years. New insights into the underlying mechanisms of the disease have led to innovative therapies that aim to regulate inflammatory processes and modulate the immune system (so-called biologics, among others).

These advances give hope to patients and show that there are ongoing efforts to further improve treatment options for psoriasis.

It is important to emphasise that psoriasis is a treatable condition and that patients do not have to be left alone. With the right medical care, support and understanding of the disease, people with psoriasis can live full lives and achieve their life goals.

The advances in research and the continuous improvement of treatment options give people with psoriasis reason to hope and motivation to deal with their disease and look for solutions.

2.1. The clinical picture of psoriasis vulgaris - the "symptoms"

Psoriasis vulgaris, also known as plaque psoriasis, is the most common form of this skin disease, accounting for 80-90% of cases. It is characterised by certain features:

The affected areas of skin show uniformly reddened and inflamed areas that are sharply demarcated. Silvery-white scales form on these skin areas, which can appear in different sizes and cover different areas of the skin.

In its most severe form, psoriatic (sub)erythroderma occurs, with a markedly reduced general condition and an imbalance of electrolytes.

Typically, psoriasis vulgaris occurs on specific areas of the body. These include the extensor sides of the extremities such as the elbows and knees, the sacral region with the rima ani, the scalp, the external auditory canals and the navel. Although itching is possible, it is usually less pronounced than in other inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema.

This description of the clinical features illustrates how varied and unique psoriasis can be. The sharply defined, inflamed plaques with silvery-white scales make it a challenge for sufferers.

2.2. Other variants of psoriasis

Psoriasis guttata is a common form of psoriasis that occurs more often in children and adolescents. It is often preceded by an upper respiratory tract infection caused by streptococci. In guttate psoriasis, there are small, not very scaly and inflamed skin lesions that are spread over the skin like confetti. Sometimes they can also appear on the face, although this is not usually the case with common psoriasis.

Psoriasis inversa is a variant where the affected areas of skin mainly appear in areas where the skin is in contact and wrinkled, such as the flexor sides of joints. Unlike other forms of psoriasis, the skin changes in psoriasis inversa are less scaly or scale-free.
