INTRODUCTION
Roll the paper, stick and shape it. After that roll another paper strip, stick and shape it. Do that again and again! These are three simple steps which define the technique named quilling. Quilling is an ancient form of art, accessible to any body and also inexpensive. It isn’t highly exacting and the needed tools and materials are affordable. You can use materials from the bookstore or whatever you find in the house. Through this technique you have the possibility to accomplish amazing works of art. The book “Quilling basics: Discover the magic world of surprises in quilling” approaches the quilling technique, also known as paper filigree. How does it work? It’s simple: you put a strip of paper through the eye of a needle and roll the needle until the paper ends. You’ll obtain a coil. From here, things can evolve in accordance with the artist’s desire, pinching the coil into diversified shapes: triangles, squares, diamonds, teardrops or other personalized models. Quilling is a wonderful technique and quite easy. Working with quilling helps to improve your imagination, it reduces stress and will lead to good profits for those who want to approach the business part of this art. Any gifted person will realize that paper filigree is much easier than painting or drawing. Here you are allowed to mix colours and materials, to let your imagination free, and to diversify shapes which only an artist’s imagination can come up with. THE STORY OF A WANDERER
It was a late autumn day, when the frosty winds were racing through the streets and the cold rain was falling on the pavement. I remember I was warmly dressed, but despite this fact, my ears had started to hurt because of the icy weather. Finally, from around the corner the tram appeared and I managed to get on the wet, slippery stairs. Between the shivering people, I saw a place which could save me from the cold weather. Through the noise and wandering voices I perceived the bright face of a small girl with red lips and big, sparkling eyes who were curiously following me while I got out of my purse a paper strip and the quilling needle tool. At the beginning, the girl was curious and kept asking her mother about the new things she saw. The girl’s mother, under the siege of many questions, came to me and asked if what I was doing was something new and where she could buy it for her daughter. Chatting, the tram continued its way and approached the station where the mother and the girl had to get off. Saying a warming “Good bye!” the girl and her mother got lost in the crowd. I found out then that the girl’s name was Cosmina and that she was passionate and curious about everything which means creation. With her pure heart, she had managed to put a smile on my face, even on such a late autumn day. For a while, our paths came together. Every time the girl used to sit silently next to me. I got used to her watching me and I tried to roll the paper strips as slowly as possible to give her time to learn. So attentive she was I expected her to become a special person when she grew up. But that was to be seen as the time passed. And, this way, in the tram that was narrowing through the cold streets of the late autumn day, I was smiling next to Cosmina as I watched her “bloom” every day. The time was passing between rolls of paper and quilling butterflies and we ended up at Christmas decorations. Snowflakes spread their white carpet throughout the city. So many joyful and creative moments made winter turn into spring and spring into summer. During the summer break I missed her and I had a feeling of guilt that I hadn’t given her enough time to explain the meaning of the quilling forms we used to shape every day. I felt sorry I couldn’t see Cosmina in this period and exchange ideas or modelling rolls and scrolls next to that smile which was brightening my entire day. Still, what was to happen next would reveal me things unknown and also their power. The summer break was coming to an end. I was looking forward to seeing that child with big, bright eyes, sharing with her creative moments and answering her questions: - “Here, how do we make it? And there … what should I do? Because I can’t make it! The paper is tricky; it folds only when it wants!” I was waiting for all of this to happen when one day, getting up the tram, I saw her there. It was really Cosmina, it was her, and I couldn’t believe it. I felt my heart thump and I got close to her with a happy smile. I talked to her. She didn’t say much, she just raised her shoulders looking at me with sad eyes. Finally, I asked her about her mother and then I saw a tear run down on Cosmina’s face. I stopped, I didn’t insist anymore and our trip seemed long and sad. In the following days I looked for her but I couldn’t find her any more. Even these days, I cannot find her and my heart is sad.
MAGIC MOMENTS NEXT TO COSMINA
I remember how each morning Cosmina surprised me with questions and from time to time she would bring me a model, a cloddish one, but made with love. Later, we started to discuss about types of paper recommended in quilling, tools, basic shapes, quilling patterns which she could make at home. I saw how she loved those paper shapes and how she played with each piece of quilling, recently created. One day, when the tram came in a hurry, I noticed a tiny girl who was carrying a bag. This image reminded me of Cosmina, waiting to meet me to create new patterns together. I loved those magic moments and I loved the passion with which the two of us brought to life every quilling design. So much purity and passion which make me smile even now. Maybe because of this I liked meeting Cosmina so much. Even if I haven’t seen her for a while it doesn’t mean I don’t know what happened to her or how she managed to change destinies around her. But about this we are going to talk more in a future edition.
