The truth about hypnosis
What is hypnosis? And what do most people believe about hypnosis?
Hypnosis is perhaps one of the most misunderstood and prejudiced methods of psychological treatment. The myths and misunderstandings surrounding hypnotherapy usually stem from people's ideas and impressions of show hypnosis. However, this has little to do with medical hypnosis.
The fact is that hypnosis is a real psychological phenomenon that can be usefully applied in clinical practice. Simply put, hypnosis is a state of high-level attention or concentration, often accompanied by relaxation and increased suggestibility. In hypnosis, many people are much more open to helpful suggestions and changes in thinking than usual. This means that hypnosis is basically nothing more than the optimal state for learning or unlearning something. Something that bothers you about yourself and your life today is something you learned at an earlier point in time and now it is simply in your life. Just as you learned it back then, you can unlearn it just as quickly. In this case, the state we call hypnosis is an optimal learning state. Your brain is therefore more receptive than in the fully awake state.
The positive ideas and suggestions given to people during hypnosis are called “post-hypnotic suggestions” because they are meant to take effect when the person wakes up from the trance and is no longer in hypnosis. These suggestions given to people in hypnosis are an important part of how the method works. While many people do not accept or act upon a suggestion given to them while awake, suggestions made under hypnosis seem to be accepted relatively effortlessly – perhaps through the “back door” of consciousness, where they often become more and more their reality and take root as important behavioral or psychological changes.
Contrary to popular belief, people in hypnosis are in total control of themselves and would never do anything that they would normally find highly offensive. Furthermore, it is a fact that everyone is receptive to hypnosis differently. To get the most out of hypnosis, make sure you go to a hypnotherapist who is familiar with your basic characteristics. Unfortunately, in my experience, these are only a few therapists. Your personal characteristics with regard to hypnotizability are actually important. If you are a person who is very “top-heavy” and rational in your thinking, you clearly need a different approach to going into hypnosis than everyone else. Because then control is the most important element in life for you and then you won't get the effect out of standard hypnosis because you won't want to / be able to get involved in it. In short: you have to hear different sentences, be able to have different experiences with hypnosis in order to experience the thing as worthwhile.
The same applies, of course, to emotional people. If you, as an emotional person, are not addressed at the level of feeling and perception of the hypnotic state, then it may be a good and beautiful relaxation, but it will not necessarily be what you can get out of hypnosis in terms of lasting change.
So make sure that these aspects of your personality and behavior are definitely addressed and incorporated by the hypnotherapist, both in the introduction to the trance and in the suggestions given.
Some people have the ability to go through everyday life in a kind of continuous hypnosis, which is also a characteristic of their personality. They are in a trance within seconds, which is certainly very nice for hypnosis, but it has completely different effects.
I have had cases in my practice that I had to get out of the permanent hypnosis to solve their problem. So it was not the lack of new ideas and suggestions, but the other way around: due to the constant state of hypnosis in everyday life, these people were completely open to other people's ideas and difficulties and absorbed them without a filter in their subconscious. One factor in this context is: you have already tried so many things to solve your problem, but nothing has worked? Then you should check whether you are actually one of those who are in a permanent state of hypnosis. Of course there are technical terms for this, but I don't want to bore you with that.
What is important to me is that you know that there are a few hypnosis therapists who recognize these exact traits in you and may also do some kind of psychological test beforehand, in which they ask certain questions and can thus roughly adapt their language so that it is definitely suitable for you.
So please don't just go wherever hypnosis is offered. Just because the advertising fits and you keep stumbling across the same name doesn't mean it's a good address for you.
What also needs to be said: It often depends on the problem. Even people who are highly hypnotizable may not immediately benefit from hypnotherapy to the extent they expect, but need a few sessions. On the other hand, a single hypnosis session can very quickly lead to results. It may of course be that the problem is multi-faceted and you need to undergo a series of hypnosis treatments to reinforce the constructive thought changes that you have been given. Conversely, however, I have often experienced that initially there was no noticeable change, and suddenly – for example, in the case of smoking cessation or weight loss hypnosis – the breakthrough came after a few days, even after 4 weeks, and the problem had resolved itself at a time when no one had expected it.
There is a list of the most common clinical and habit-changing applications of hypnosis, which I will show you in the next chapter. If you have any further questions that are not covered in this book, please feel free to write to me. You can find a message box on my website:
