A message to you

Welcome to Saxophone Basics! And welcometo that most sophisticated of instruments, thesaxophone. In less than no time you’ll be well onthe way to mastering the instrument and able toimpress your friends and family with a range oftunes at your finger tips.

To help you on your way, here are a few words ofadvice:

• There are lots of duets and group pieces inSaxophone Basics; as well as practising andperforming by yourself, ask other saxophoniststo join you, and have fun playing together.

• From day one ask your teacher or somebodyelse to play the piano and saxophoneaccompaniments that are included in theteacher’s book; these are indicated by thefollowing icons:

for saxophone accompaniments

for piano accompaniments.

Alternatively, you can play along on altosaxophone to the accompaniment tracks (),which can be accessed at fabermusic.com/audioor in the CD edition. Two accompanimentoptions are available where two tracks areindicated.

• Look after your instrument. Clean it after useand store it away safely.

• Grab every opportunity to perform in publiceither as a soloist or in a jazz band or orchestra;this is the best way to gain confidence and, after all, one of the main reasons for learning aninstrument!

• If you are unsure of anything, always ask yourteacher to explain it or, where necessary, re-explain it.

• Practise regularly – it’s the only way to improve.A little a day should be the rule.

• Go out of your way to listen to and beinspired by experienced sax players. Find outabout concerts, broadcasts on the radio andrecordings, both on CD and online.

• Have a go at improvising and composing onyour saxophone. You will find helpful activitysheets to download from fabermusicstore.com/basics.

And finally … there are lots of helpful suggestionsin the course of Saxophone Basics, but if youwant a tip from me now, don’t forget that you arelearning to play music first and the saxophonesecond: make sure everything you do on your saxis musical.

I hope you enjoy learning from this book as muchas I did writing it.

Andy Hampton
