ZEN PRACTICE - THE BEGINNING
On first arriving at the Zen Meditation Hall, the Zendo, one is these days usually met by some practitioners or one practioner, a meditator or disciple of a Zen Master, who politely shows one to a meditation cushion and mat, one's seat....showing one how to sit cross legged on the cushion on the floor, so that the knees reach forward and touch right down onto the square mat of one's seating position or place on the floor.
Mat, cushion, tatami mats or carpeted heated winter time floors and beautiful halls or rooms or none of these,..... Zen essence is nothing really to do with all these little details of one's material surrounds, though the style of such neautiful surrounds arises out of centuries of plenty of rich Japanese temples to which old time Japanese fighting warriors originally came to their resident Zen temple Masters for refuge and to seek instruction on facing their dilemmas, .....the fighting warriors' imminent deaths in local battles. They would give the Zen Masters great riches, to protect them, and teach them how to tough it out, and master life, and everything they have to face up to in life. The many temples proliferated over Japan over the centuires up to today, many becoming very rich, opulent, beautiful places, with very beautful cultivated traditional gardens and ponds or lakes. Its was all mind and body stuff, from the early days of Zen, disciples learning to confront thier worst personal fears. It was and is always a mental and physical experience during the very many hours per day for a week or longer of meditation practice too.
