THE SPLINTERS OF THE MIND

The Splinters of the Mind

Can we understand who we are, what we are and why we think the way we do?

These thoughts always confuse me. I see the world around me and wonder what am I. I am some part of all this. But, what is this? I am on a planet that is chasing the sun around the galaxy. This planet is one of the hundreds of billions of other planets, that's chasing one of the hundreds of billions of other suns in this galaxy. And this galaxy is one among the hundreds of billions of other galaxies in this universe. To put that into perspective to the size of me. I am on a planet that’s one five billionth the size of a pen head if the universe was the size of a 6-foot circle. The Earth is almost nonexistent floating in the vastness of all this. Then I am one of the nine billion humans on this planet. Now, what does that say about me? Not much really, but is that true? I am here, am I not as much a part of all this as anything else? There must be some reason or purpose I am here!

Well, I think I am in control of my body, I can build and create things to change my surroundings to suit me. Of course, that just makes me alive and conscious of my surroundings. Wait, conscious, what's that about? That does make me different than almost anything else. What is this consciousness? I think that just means I am aware of myself and the choices I make. Choices? I can choose what I want. Wanting? What makes me want things? It seems I crave and do things subconsciously. Wait, subconscious, what is that about? Well, it seems to me to be all the things I've learned in my life that I can do without thinking about it. Such as breathing, blinking my eyes, walking and many other things of this nature. But there seems to be more. It's like programs that are running behind the scene. Yes, that's where I store all my beliefs and my sense of what's right and wrong. Any time I make a choice, I check here to see if it's okay. Some discoveries say the gut and the heart have brain cells. That's why we say, “I've got that gut feeling,” or “that's the heart talking” and now it's thought that each cell of the body has memories that are passed down through the generations. These are the genes that make up the building blocks of our cells. That's where instincts come from. This is how we know how to walk, breathe and make our bodily functions, we didn't have to be taught to walk, blink, breathe or even talk. We just had to learn to master them. These genes are passed down with pre-written programs that we follow without thought. So we use all of these, our instinct, gut feelings and emotions of the heart and the subconscious to make a conscious choice. But, we still have programming from our beliefs and what we've been taught. All of this comes together in our thoughts. The subconscious collects it all and processes it using our beliefs but it's the creative consciousness that makes the choice. Sounds like the subconscious is the one in control. Ninety-five percent of the time it is. What our conscious mind is doing with all this free time isn't understood, but once we learn, the subconscious mind takes over unless something is out of place that makes you conscious of it. It's like the subconscious mind is the impatient child that grabs reality and takes it from the conscious mind, which lets it have its way.

From our conception to birth, this impatience seems to be pushing us along, we're born so early that we're not even fully developed, this is so the head can fit through the birth canal and our heads are still soft enough and can change shape to fit. We are all born premature and finish our growing outside the womb. We are one of the few that are born with our eyes open. A lot of mammals are born blind and learn to use their sense of smell or hearing. We use our eyes and only birds of prey see better than us. We've been tailor-made to master our environment. Our body has so many weaknesses and yet we persevere in any adversity. But it's our mind and its programming that masters the world around us and yet it is the one thing that can betray us the most.
