My life's work has been about helping people use social science to solve the most important problems of their lives-like breaking stubborn habits or holding high-stakes conversations with stubborn colleagues. Over the years I've been blessed to work with not only some of the finest scholars in the world, but some of the finest human beings as well. Which brings me to the pages that follow.
Stretch is a story-filled delightful read. It is timely and important. It pulls together what we know about staying relevant today and appropriately anticipating tomorrow. It is no ordinary book. The well-informed practices presented in Stretch will help you take control of your future and get the career and life you want.
Stretch is everything I strive for in my own work. It is the expression of careful but seductive academic rigor. You'll get smarter and feel pleasure while doing it. I would have happily endorsed the book on its own merits, but that it was co-authored by a person I deeply admire made it not only proper but an honor to comply.
In taking on this topic, the authors argue that we've moved past 330 B.C., when Aristotle wrote, “All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind.” In a refreshing nod to self-empowerment, the authors counter that full engagement of the mind at work is not just possible but life altering. Work matters. The two choices you make in life that most shape who you become are whom to live with and whom to work with. Stretch will not only help you create a fulfilling career-it will guide you in creating a meaningful life.
I've marveled at times at my dumb luck. The skills I've developed through my work have opened doors for me to influence social and global problems I care deeply about. I wish I could take credit for having been more intentional in that happy accident. Stretch offers a pattern for creating just that kind of intentional life.
Those who believe they can at least change their corner of the world are those most likely to make a difference for us all. The last two decades have revolutionized the old models of work. Today's pace of change requires new voices and new strategies to guide us in how to stay prepared and engaged. In reading this book you can prepare for what the future will bring. Compelling and rigorous, yet fresh in approach, the book comes within reach of extraordinary, not only as a guide for a successful career but also for making the most out of life.
Too many business books are authored by consultants who have never personally had a career in large organizations, started companies, led public institutions, or worked in non-profits. Their guidance falls apart when it comes to the practical realities of everyday life. In contrast, the authors here are uncommonly positioned to bring a practical voice to help you achieve your career dreams.
No matter what line of work you are in, or whether you are five years or 25 years into your career, this book can change your life. I found myself engaged, challenged, and provoked in my thinking by the compelling premise of this book. You'll be reminded of those essential life lessons that we tend to forget in the midst of our busy lives. I think you'll agree and discover, as I have, that Stretch: How to Future-Proof Yourself for Tomorrow's Workplace is destined to become an essential read.
Joseph GrennyNew York Times bestselling author ofInfluencer and Crucial Conversations
Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That isthe only thing which the mind can never exhaust, neveralienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, andnever dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing foryou. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.Merlin, in The Once and Future King
—T.H. White
Stretch: How to Future-Proof Yourself for Tomorrow Workplace, tackles the question: How do we stay relevant in our work lives? Our answer: stretch. Stretch how we learn, stretch to stay open in our thinking, stretch to build diverse networks and experiences, and stretch our motivation.
It's a tall order. While we don't have a silver bullet solution, we do have lots of suggestions that we've learned through trial and error, research and experience. We wrote this book to address a less predictable future workplace, one in which you need to have options to realize your dreams. Barbara Mistick and Karie Willyerd met pursuing their own dreams of a doctorate in a program aimed at working executives and designed to bridge the worlds of scholarship and practice. It's funny to think of a doctorate degree as the last degree you'll earn because it made us realize no one is ever finished learning.
