Beschreibung

You are repeatedly abusing your body every day without knowing just how damaging some of your regular activities are e.g. doing up your shoes, getting into a car, watching your favourite television show. There are many ways to do each of these activities. Some of these ways are better than others while some are detrimental to your health. All your nasty habits are easy to change with diligent practice and self-awareness and of course, eventually replacing them with another effective habit.

This is the reasoning behind reading this book - to make you become more aware of the habits you execute during an average day and how you can modify these undesirable behaviours to improve your body’s overall function and ultimately, your health.

In a nutshell, to unlearn your poor technique and turn it from its old, energy sapping, dysfunctional way into the best case scenario.

THE BASICS

Why you need to read this book

This book will start with you waking up in the morning (I hope) and finish with you turning off your light at night and closing your eyes. It is a day in the average life of you. But first I must make a few things clear.

Performing magic

I am a magician. You can come and see me perform magic tricks to make your pain disappear anytime. Most of the time, my tricks work. Other times, I can’t make your pain disappear completely and I may need some help. You may already see magicians of my kind to try to make your pain disappear as there are many different magicians in the world today that make pain go away– doctors, masseurs, chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, naturopaths, podiatrists, osteopaths, witchdoctors etc.

Be assured that each magician’s tricks work. Some tricks work better than others depending on the nature of your problem (and how much you believe in your own head that they will work – the strongest magic). Over time, if their tricks are not working for you, then you need to make the decision to consult a different magician. Or you can continue to waste your time and money. Some magicians are in this circus called “life” for the wrong reasons and like taking your time and money. Remember also that there are always good and bad magicians around so go seek out the good ones. It is also not wise to lie down and resign yourself to discomfort and pain either. Keep searching for that one magician who can best improve your body’s efficiency and is focussed on you and your needs.

The Fountain of Youth

The tricks that your own body performs are the most impressive of all because your tricks can keep your pain away for an extended length of time. As I mentioned before, the strongest magic is in your own mind and this is one trick you must master. You are the best magician of the lot. If your life were full of good habits, then it would be hard to find fault in the workings of your body. Most of the time. Sometimes you may need some help from one of the magicians previously mentioned. But what happens when you walk out the door and leave your magicians premises? Does your problem disappear forever, or does it slowly find its way back into your life? Who will help you now? Try looking at yourself.

It irks me when you fill your life with bad habits and you must keep coming back to see me with the same problem all the time. AAARRRGGGHHH! Don’t get me wrong. I like seeing you. I like making your pain disappear and you keep me in a job. I just wish that you would just stop eating that ice cream every night after dinner or bending over to get something off the floor without bending your knees. You know it is wrong.

Or maybe you don’t?

It’s up to you to do the right thing and I will teach you simple new ways or tricks on how to keep your body working well and slow down the degenerative or ageing process – like the fountain of youth. Remember this book is an aid to improve your body’s efficiency and thus its overall health. Some of the following ideas may sound simply ridiculous, others ridiculously simple and you might wonder why you hadn’t thought of doing them years ago. As a practicing perfectionist, I am trying to perfect the way that you can improve your body’s function. It is not a guide to curing problems you may have, even though you may find many of your problems will disappear. The dregs can be left up to your magician.

Guess which hand

I am not going to tell you what type of magician I am. The reason for this is that I feel it will change your opinion of what you are reading and make you sceptical of what is to follow. It’s called confirmation bias. Let’s just say that I am aiming to make corrections to your NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM. That is, improving the function of the nerves that make up your nervous system, improving the function of the muscles that make up your muscular system and improving the function of the joints that make up your skeletal system. You are a machine and I need to focus on improving your function to reduce your symptoms. Like a car that performs well and runs smoothly. I do not need to focus on your symptoms and make them go away while leaving your body functioning poorly. That’s like me turning the engine warning light off on your dashboard and sending you out driving again. Or like giving you a pain killer to reduce your foot pain because you have a rock in your shoe rather than remove the rock.

The head bone’s connected to the neck bone……

One very important thing to note is that you can’t have a problem with one of these systems mentioned above without it interfering and influencing the other two systems. These problems, in turn, can affect one or more other systems in your body outside of the NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM i.e. Urinary system, Reproductive system, Respiratory system, Cardiovascular system, Digestive system, Endocrine system, Lymphatic system etc. More on this later.

When a problem starts in your body it can become a silent vicious cycle and once the ball starts rolling you want to try and stop it quick smart before more systems become involved. You might have heard it. It’s called chronic disease.

Circle of Life

Let us go back to your Neuromusculoskeletal system and how the three parts of this system affect each other. If one system is dysfunctional, then all of them are. The Nervous system controls your Muscular system, which moves your Skeletal system, which impinges on your Nervous system and such is the circle of life.

I cringe when a patient comes to me and says, “I think my problem is just muscular”. AAARRRGGGHHH! Sure, the patient might be experiencing some muscle dysfunction but if that is the case then the bones that the muscle moves will be dysfunctional also, and consequently, will directly affect the joint that the muscle spans. And if this is the case then there will be changes to the nerve receptors around that joint and in all the other muscles acting upon that joint. Get it? Or conversely, (a little bit harder to understand but keep reading - you will get it soon ) the dysfunctional muscle can impinge on a nerve or alter a nerves response which then in turn can relay the wrong message along the nerve and eventually alter the feedback and hence function of a joint.

See! The pain is not just muscular. It involves all three systems: Nervous, Muscular and Skeletal. Or known collectively as the NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM.

BRAIN FOOD

Big Brother

When it comes to the running or control of your body, which organ do you think is the most important? Put your hands up if you said the heart. It must be because if your heart stopped pumping then you would die, right? Sorry, lose 5 points. Let us go one step higher and think about what keeps your heart pumping? Wow, it’s your brain! You can transplant your heart, but you can’t transplant your brain (yet) and therefore your brain is much more important than your heart.

Your brain is your big brother, the master cylinder, the Central Processing Unit, the “main man” (or woman to be politically correct). Luckily, when I work, I have your brain as my ally. Without your brain, none of the magicians you see would be able to make their tricks stick. Without your brain, you would not know how to repair yourself and your pain would be consistently “hanging around”.

A Painful Secret

If information from your brain can get to the rest of your body without interference and from your body to your brain without interference, then your body will work to the best of its abilities.

Most of the time this statement is correct. One instance where this is not correct is in auto-immune disease in which your brain believes it is doing the right thing by slowly destroying itself.

If everything in your body were working to the best of its ability, then you would be less likely to experience pain – right? Here is a simple analogy.

A tap sends water down a hose to water your garden and allow it to flourish and bloom. Likewise, your brain sends messages down your spinal cord, along your spinal nerves and then along your peripheral nerves to tell your body how to function effectively.

If someone steps on the garden hose, then not enough water gets to your garden and it slowly dies. If something is pressing on your spinal cord, spinal nerves or peripheral nerves, then whatever those nerves supply, slowly dies.

So basically, one of the ways to staying pain free and for your body to work better is to make sure that there are no bad influences on the pathways that convey messages to and from your brain.

Fixing Numero Uno

It is very easy to destroy brain tissue and once it’s gone, there ain’t no coming back. But the good news is that we can build new connections in the brain to make up for the ones we have destroyed. This is called neuroplasticity, but we won’t go into that today – really, really, really, smart people write books on that stuff.

Some of the big killers of our brain tissue today are alcohol, tobacco and recreational drugs. Some other killers that you use every day and that are causing damage to your central processing unit are artificial colours, artificial flavours, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and Aspartame (found in artificial sweeteners), just to name a few.

It is harder to improve your brain function when using the above products, but there are certain substances that have been shown to be beneficial.

H2O

Your brain requires lots of water so get two litres into your body every day. This doesn’t mean you must drink two litres of water. Eating fruit and vegetables is a good way of getting the precious liquid into your system since these contain up to 70 percent water as well as lots of essential vitamins and minerals.
