High School

The sun shone through the slightly dusty pane of the high window and warmed Bulli's body so much that he had to take off his sweater to avoid sweltering. Thus, he threw it beside him on the scratched wooden floor. With a bored look, Bernhard then watched the second hand on the large wall clock above the classroom door to his right while Mrs. Smith scribbled some tedious algebra formulas with white chalk on the board. "Who cares about this stuff besides Rob, of course?", he muttered silently to himself, upon which his mouth slowly widened into an amused grin.

Rob liked pretty much all the school subjects that Bulli couldn't stand. For instance, the aforementioned algebra, as well as mathematics, geometry, or chemistry. In the latter, it only became exciting for the native Pole when Mr. Brown demonstrated experiments mixing smelly liquids with other substances, leading to chemical reactions like billowing smoke or even small explosions. But unfortunately, this was rarely the case. Most of the time, even there, the lessons were dull. In his opinion, it should be banging!

Five minutes to three o'clock. Those were long five minutes. Actually, five minutes too many. Instead of following Mrs. Smith's lesson, the homeroom teacher, Bernhard stared spellbound at the long, thin hand which flipped from one second to the next. Automatically, his legs began to bounce, supported by the tips of his toes on the parquet floor. The closer the minute hand moved to three, the faster his knee moved up and down. Soon, the entire desk started to shake.

Samu soon noticed his buddy who had his desk at the same height in the classroom but on the opposite side, right by the door. Meanwhile, as Bulli's facial expression still showed serious folds, still fixed on time, Samuel began to watch him with a smirk: "You'd think he's about to wet his pants…pffhihi," he thought and shook his head amusingly. "The same with him every Friday afternoon."

"...divisible by nine if their cross sum is divisible by nine," Mrs. Smith announced while her eyes initially swept over the class but then lingered on the daydreamer. "Hmm - hm! Mr. Bulinski? Mr. Bulinski?!"

"Uhh - yes?" Bulli asked, visibly confused, staring towards the teacher. He immediately straightened his upper body. Some classmates tried to suppress their smiles as best as they could. Still, a quiet "hehe" or "mhpff" could be heard here and there.

"Do you agree?" Mrs. Smith put her hands on her hips and frowned questioningly at the student sitting directly in front of her, who obviously had no clue what she had just explained about algebra.

"Eeehm. Yes, the cross sum of nine," guessed the Pole uncertainly. Immediately, the whole class started to laugh. Leading the laughter was Samu, who, bending over with amusement, held his belly and then wiped his tearful eyes with his sleeves as the teacher asked the girls and boys to be quiet. Meanwhile, Bulli gave Samu the middle finger, which led to another round of laughter. He had managed once again to play the class clown - the cool guy with the light brown dyed mohawk.

"Today was the last class before the test next Tuesday. So... if you have any questions - ask me. I'm here until 4 o'clock." As expected, she looked expectantly down at Bernhard with pursed lips. And he, meanwhile, pretended to write the exam date into his homework notebook. But the only thing that occupied him at that moment was that the minute hand was already just past three. This raised the question for the student why she had to torture him like that? After all, it was not just minutes on this Friday afternoon; it happened regularly that the students could leave the classroom late. Calculated over the entire year, this would add up to several hours of overtime. Hours! Valuable time that would be missing from him and the crew's free time. What nonsense could they have gotten up to with that?! During one lesson, Bernhard drew a table with the weekdays, noted all the excess minutes for each subject, and multiplied them by the number of weeks in a year. This resulted in a considerable total. Amal and Samu were outraged when they were presented with Bulli's ingenious calculation later in the treehouse.

"It's outrageous!" Samu thundered with clenched fist.

"That's unfair, I agree with you," Amal spoke in his usual calm tone. He didn't like it when tempers flared. He always sought peace. But then Rob unfolded his crossed arms, maintaining his typical critical expression on his face, and snatched the piece of paper that looked as if a dog had chewed and spat it out. Everyone was silent as Rob checked the calculation. After a short time, he pressed the A4 sheet against Bulli's chest, who was still grinning, obviously proud of his mathematical achievement, and grumbled, "You idiot didn't subtract the holiday time during the year. According to your calculation, we would be going to school all year round, excluding weekends - which, genius, you did remember. Bravo!" mocked the intelligent Robin, who attended a private school for the gifted. Amal and Samu burst into roaring laughter, while at the same time, Bernhard crumpled the paper, threw it at Rob's head, and added that he must be the biggest nerd in America. The blonde took this "insult" as a compliment and thanked him with a wink.

"Well then. I wish everyone a nice extended weekend, and we'll see each other on Tuesday." As soon as Mrs. Smith finished speaking, Bulli jumped from his chair, grabbed his bag, and hurried to his buddy, who was just starting a conversation with Luci, the beauty of the class.

"Hey Lu, sorry to interrupt, but he really doesn't have time for wasted time right now. We have man stuff to do - right, buddy?" Luci raised her right eyebrow and retorted quickly, "Do you mean ... hanging out in your stinking, ramshackle shack in the woods where you twiddle your thumbs waiting for adventure, and the only exciting thing is peeing out the door into the depths?"

"Firstly: Yes, the hut stinks. A man cave naturally smells strong, it comes from the testosterone release. Secondly: It is a shack - you are right about that. But it is a treehouse that we built with our own hands..." Lu interrupted him: "...Samuel's father built it for you. I know it." She nodded several times to underline the fact. Bulli didn't show any reaction. "Thirdly: None of your business." As the native Pole then scratched his cheek with his middle finger, Luci snorted annoyed, stared with her blue eyes into those of the two inches shorter Bernhard and declared before she disappeared from the room that she does not hang out with losers. "Losing is part of winning! Only losers win!" Bulinski shouted after her and noticed from Mrs. Smith's wrinkled facial expression, who had heard everything, that the last sentence made no sense. For a short time, the teacher stood motionless in front of the blackboard, stared at her eloquent student, then turned away and rubbed her temples with her fingertips, as if she had a headache.

"You realize she fled from you?" teased the handsome Samu.

"Yes, love teases," Bernhard replied.

"Of course. And I'm the President of the United States. Hahaha!"

"Hehehe!"

"So - let's get out of here."

"A man, a word."

The two friends shouldered their backpacks contentedly and left the classroom. In the hallway, there was a real hustle and bustle, but as always, a cheerful atmosphere as on almost every Friday afternoon. There was a special lightness in the air. Surely it was due partly to the three Fridays but certainly also to the exceptionally warm spring day in Boston. After the long cold winter with dark days, the young people longed incredibly for sunny warm hours. Being outside. Playing baseball. Or just meeting people. Bulli felt it especially strongly and urged Samu to hurry. "Amal is probably already waiting."
