What Is Hypnosis?
In the 1950s an American patient underwent Thryroidectomy surgery without any pain killers or anesthesia and this is when the American Medical Association noticed this powerful tool. Doctors continue to use hypnosis to ease pain and relax their patients. Dentists have used hypnosis to ease their patients for over a century. In addition to practicing hypnosis, Doctors and Dentists refer patients to Hypnotherapists, to overcome addictions such as Alcohol and Smoking and also for weight control. The world of Hypnotherapy has become wider in offering solutions at various levels.
Hypnosis is a process of boring your conscious mind so that it stops thinking and relaxes; it is just like when you go to bed at night and a state just before you fall asleep. In a Hypnotic state your conscious mind becomes less active but you don’t go to sleep. It is at this stage that your subconscious mind is best receptive to suggestions. Your subconscious mind accepts suggestions and makes those suggestions to manifest themselves in your lives.

The Process of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is the art and science of getting a client or in most cases a patient to get in to a very light trance like state. This state is also known as “Alpha”. During Alpha state of mind a client is 200 times more suggestible to and is able to receive more positive commands that bring positive change. The person performing this act is known as hypnotherapist.
There are other deeper states of mind or stages other than Alpha known as Delta or Theta also proven to be effective but mostly they are not required.
There are four stages in hypnotherapy namely: BETA, ALPHA, THETA and DELTA.
BETA: This is a fully awakened state f consciousness in which a person perceives the outside world. In this state the brain is fully awake, alert and functional.
ALPHA: In this state, the persons thinking is slightly slowed down and he is able to narrow down his thoughts to focus on one area. This state is similar to the state we are when watching TV, driving or cooking food. For some time you are focused on outside stimuli such as pedestrians and signals but later your focus narrows down to what is happening in front of you. Alpha is a state in which the client is not really sleeping and not really awake but is more suggestible to commands given by hypnotherapist. A very important thing to be noted here is that the clients are always in control and can react as they react in normal state.
THETA AND DELTA: The stage deeper than Alpha is known as Theta or Delta. It is in these stages that the hypnotherapist was able to perform surgery where they removed the thyroid of the person without any anesthesia. Some methods of Hypnotherapy are more effective in Theta or Delta
Some patients under hypnosis go deeper than Alpha but mostly they transition between Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. Currently, many top Hypnotherapists are conducting tests to ascertain as to how deeply a person has fallen in trance.
Misconception 1: Hypnosis is Sleep: It is a proven fact that during hypnosis the eyes are closed by the person is wide awake but may look as if they are asleep. It is true that some patients drift off to sleep during hypnotherapy sessions but this will only make them benefit very little as they will not be able to take any suggestions. During the therapy the hypnotist uses words such as “you are sleepy, sleep” but this only to take the client into a deeper state of relaxation.
Misconception 2: Hypnosis is an Occult or Supernatural Practice: The American medical association recognises Hypnosis as an alternative and therapeutic tool used for a variety of applications. It is not some new age or occult product. Hypnosis is a special tool for relaxation and it is also used for spiritual progress but there is nothing spiritual about hypnosis.
Misconception 3: Hypnosis creates Amnesia: Many people have been made to believe that they don’t remember anything after coming out of hypnotic sleep, this is true in some cases but in many cases the patients clearly remember the entire episode.
