Rainer Thieme, Jahrgang 1955 wohnhaft im Altenburger Land in Thüringen. Freier Autor, er befasst sich seit über 30 Jahren hauptsächlich mit Diskografien über Musiker und Plattenlabel und schreibt Artikel für die regionale Presse und das Jazz Podium.

Einleitung – Kurzbiografie

Der charismatische Schlagzeuger Tony Oxley wurde am 15. Juni 1938 in Sheffield / England geboren. Autodidaktisch lernte er als Kind Klavierspielen und bekam mit 14 sein erstes Schlagzeug. Er hatte eine Ausbildung in Musiktheorie und im Schlagzeug. Schon zu Beginn der 60er Jahre kam er mit 2 Musikern zusammen, um Jazz zu spielen. Es entstand das Joseph Holbrooke Trio. 1998 fanden sich die 3 Musiker Derek Bailey Gitarre und Gavin Bryars Bass noch einmal zusammen um 2 CD’s einzuspielen. Es war eine der ersten Formationen, die ab Mitte der 60er Jahre freie improvisierte Musik spielten.

In dieser Epoche kristallisierten sich nachfolgende Free-Jazz-Musiker, außer in den USA, Deutschland und Italien in Großbritannien heraus, die immer noch gesuchte und gefragte Session-Musiker sind. Eine Auswahl soll demonstrieren, wer mit Tony Oxley seinen Weg bestreitete. Die einen mehr, manche nur selten. Hier die Creme de la creme des englischen Free-Jazz:

Noch in den 60er Jahren war Tony Oxley „Haustrommler“ im Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. Durch Zusammenspielen und Freunschaft mit Derek Bailey wurde erwogen, ein eigenes freies Free-Jazz-Label zu gründen.

1970 entstand somit das Plattenlabel INCUS. Hier konnten unabhängig von den großen Label, wie Philips, Fontana oder CBS die Musiker ihre freien Improvisationen veröffentlichen.

Seit 1972 ist Tony Oxley auch als Maler aktiv. Beispiele seines Schaffens in dieser Richtung sind zum Beispiel in dem Beilageheft der 2-LP Taylor/Oxley „Ailanthus/Altissima“ zu sehen.

Seit Anfang der 70er Jahre wurden Jazz-Musiker aus dem „westlichen Ausland“ in die DDR eingeladen und traten zu den bekannten Jazz-Festivals in Leipzig, Berlin oder Peitz auf.

Tony Oxley trat erstmalig am 6. Juni 1980 zu den Jazz Tagen in Leipzig auf. Das Konzert fand in der Moritzbastei statt, wo er zusammen mit Elton Dean, Peter Kowald und Konrad (Conny) Bauer auftrat. Ebenso spielte er nochmal am 29. Juni 1980 in Leipzig mit Alan Skidmore (ts, as,) und Ali Haurand (b), angekündigt als S.O.H.

Leider fällt gerade ein interessantes Konzert in Leipzig aus. Tony Oxley hat extra für das diesjährige Trommelfaelle-Festival eine Komposition geschrieben „Improvisation with Discipline“, das am 4. April 2020 uraufgeführt werden sollte. Eingeladen dafür waren Etienne Nillesen dr, Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen dr, Tony Oxley electronics und Chris Corsano dr, für jeden Drummer waren ungefähr 45 Minuten für die Solo’s geplant und, am Schluß sollte es zu einer Gruppenimprovisation kommen.

Die großen Radiosendeanstalten WDR in Köln oder der NDR in Hamburg luden immerwieder Jazzmusiker in ihre Sendestudios ein oder schnitten Livekonzerte mit, die teilweise im Radio übertragen oder auf Tonträgern veröffentlicht wurden und seit dem im Schallarchiv schlummern.

Eine Aufnahme mit Tony Oxley wurde 1970 vom NDR als Schallplatte herausgegeben „Die Jazz-Werkstatt ‘70“. Technisch sind diese Live-Mitschnitte von hoher Qualität. Diese Rundfunkanstalten waren bemüht, für das Publikum erstklassike Übertragungen zu präsentieren.

Die größte Zeit seines Lebens spielte Tony Oxley mit Derek Bailey und Cecil Taylor zusammen und, außer in Großbritannien, hauptsächlich in Deutschland, Italien und den USA. Außer den normalen Trommeln, Becken und Glocken, kamen immer mehr selbstgebastelte Instrumente dazu, mit dem er „intrikate Klangflächen“ (Ulrich Kurth) produzierte. Außer Schlagzeug und Piano, spielt er Violine und setzt immer öfter Elektronik mit ein. Dies ist in der aktuellen CD Beaming (2020) gut zu erkennen.

Tony Oxley lebt seit ca. 30 Jahren in Viersen am Niederrhein in Nordrhein-Westfahlen. Er ist verheiratet mit Tutta Oxley.

Introduction - Short Biography

The charismatic Drummer Tony Oxley were born June 15, 1938 in Sheffield / England. Teaching himself as a child he learned to play the piano and with 14 years old he got his first Drumkit. He had a education in music-theory and drumming in the “Black Watch Regiment” in the early 60ies. He got together with 2 musicians tp play Jazz: The “Joseph Holbrooke Trio” was created. 1998 the 3 musicians, Derek Bailey guitar, Gavin Bryars bass and Tony came together once more to make 2 CD’s. This Trio was one of the first formation, which from the mid 60ies played free improvised music.

In this epoch, following free Jazz musicians came out in Great Britain, which are still wanted musicians, a collection should demonstrade, who worked with Tony Oxley along the way (USA, Germany, Italy and other countries are here not mentioned). Here the Crème de la Crème of english Free Jazz:

Still in the 60ies, Tony Oxley was “House Drummer” in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club / London.

Through his work and friendship with Derek Bailey they desided, to found their own label 1970 INCUS started. Indepently from the big labels like Philips, Fontana or CBS. The musicians could bring their Improvisations on the market.

Since 1972 Tony Oxley is also active as painter. Examples of this work are to be found in the booklet of the 2-LP “Taylor/Oxley Ailanthus/Altissima”.

Since the beginning of the 70ies Jazz musicians from the “West” were invited to the GDR and performed in the known Jazz-Festivals in Leipzig, Berlin and Peitz. Tony Oxley first played on June 6, 1980 on the “Jazzdays” in Leipzig. In the Moritzbastei he played with Elton Dean, Peter Kowald and Konrad (Conny) Bauer. He played again in Leipzig on June 29, 1980 with SOH (Alan Skidmore ts, as) and Ali Haurand (b).

Unfortunally a interesting concert could not happen (Corona-Pandemie)! For the this year “Trommelfaelle” Festival Tony Oxley wrote a new compositions “Improvisation with discipline” which should be first performed on 4th april 2020. Also invited herefore were Entienne Nillesen dr, Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen dr, Chris Corsana dr and Tony Oxley electronics. For everly drummer were a solo planed of approx. 45 minutes and at the end a Group-improvisation.

The big Radiostations WDR in Cologne and NDR in Hamburg invited again and again Jazz-Musicians into the recording partly were played in the radio or published on LP and since then sleeping in the archives.

One recording with Tony Oxley were put on LP from NDR “Die Jazzwerkstatt ‘70”. Technically these Live-Recordings are of high quality, these Radiostations were anxious to present first class transmissions.

Most time of this life Tony Oxley played with Derek Bailey and Cecil Taylor together and apart of Great Britain, mainly in Germany, Italy and USA.

Beside the normal drums, cymbals, gongs and bells came more selfmade instruments to the kit, with whom he produced “intricate soundareas” (Ulrich Kurth “intrikate Klangflaechen). Other than percussion and piano played he violin and used more and more often “Electronics”.

This is very well to hear on the actuelle CD “Beaming” (recorded by Confront, 2020).

Tony Oxley lives since approximately 30 years in Viersen/Lowerrhine in Northrhine-Westfalia. He is married with Tutta Oxley.

Joseph Holbrooke war ein musikalisches Trio, das von 1962 bis 1966 in Großbritannien existierte. 1998 wurde es für kurze Zeit neu gegründet.

Die Gruppe bestand aus Derek Bailey, Gavin Bryars und Tony Oxley. Die Gruppe wurde zu Ehren des englischen Komponisten Joseph Charles Holbrooke benannt. Holbrooke geboren 5. Juli 1878 in Croyden, gest. am 5. August 1958 in London war außerdem Pianist und Dirigent.

Joseph Holbrooke was a musical trio which existed from 1962 to 1966 in Great Britain. In 1998 it was anew founded for a short time.

The group existed of Derek Bailey, Gavin Bryars and Tony Oxley. The group was named to honour of the English composer Joseph Charles Holbrooke. Holbrooke was born 5th of July, 1878 in Croyden, died. moreover, 5th of August, 1958 in London was pianist and conductor.
