In my roles as Chief Information Security Officer and Chief Information Officer, it was always a top priority to ensure that my teams operated at their highest potential. I needed teams that were not only skilled and knowledgeable but also engaged, empowered, and united in purpose. Individuals had to feel seen, heard, and valued, while also being motivated to support one another and work collaboratively toward a common goal.
One of the most profound lessons I've learned throughout my career is that building a team isn't just about hiring talented individuals; it's about creating an environment where each person's unique strengths are understood, appreciated, and strategically applied. My ability to cultivate such environments can be traced directly back to my work with Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring.
I met Linda and Brian over a decade ago during a career transition. In a previous role, I had built a strong team from the ground up—hiring exceptional talent, mentoring them, and encouraging their growth. However, when I moved on to a new position, I realized that while the team had thrived under my leadership, it wasn't a team in the truest sense. It had been held together by the strength of my presence. Once I left, many of the individuals I had developed also moved on. It was a humbling realization and one that led to a promise: I would never again build a group of individuals who relied solely on a leader for cohesion. I would focus on building teams that were equipped to thrive together, even in my absence.
That's where Linda and Brian's expertise came in. They introduced me to a powerful system grounded in their deep understanding of psychology, human behavior, and individual strengths. Through their guidance, I learned how to identify and appreciate the unique wiring of each team member. They provided a shared language to talk about those differences and taught us how to apply this understanding to foster respect, trust, and collaboration. Their work didn't just transform our approach to teamwork—it transformed us as individuals personally and professionally.
Linda and Brian have continued to refine their approach, working with tens of thousands of people, learning from their experiences, and continually evolving their methods. Their belief in the potential of every individual—to grow, learn, and change—remains unwavering. Their techniques are not about labeling or rigid definitions of “right” or “wrong,” but about meeting each person where they are, with compassion, and helping them see new possibilities. There is no judgment—only a commitment to growth, self‐awareness, and the belief that we all have the power to continually remake ourselves.
Unfolded is the culmination of Linda and Brian's life's work—a reflection of their ongoing learning and growth. An unfolding and refolding of their personal maps. The characters in this allegory embody the full spectrum of human traits, and as Linda points out, we all likely embody these traits to some degree. Each character is essential to the balance, just as each member is essential to the success of a team.
In a world filled with uncertainty and challenge, Unfolded invites us to imagine what might be possible if we gave ourselves permission to never stop growing. It reminds us that we are stronger than we often think, that the answers we seek are often already within us, and that, most importantly, we live in a world where we must support one another and be open to receiving support in return.
This book is a gift—a blueprint for growth, both personal and collective—and I am honored to share it with you.

Unfolded is an allegory for individuals or teams with a dream: a dream to uncover a new dream or a new identity. The world needs people and leaders with the courage to dream new dreams big enough to reach the world and bright enough to heal it. Unfolded points to our life's work separately and together as business partners and partners in marriage.
One day at our kitchen table, Brian slid two typed pages across to me. I read his words and was moved. In a few paragraphs, he baited me. I knew he was onto something. Brian found a way to articulate why we do the important work of listening to and inspiring others to embrace who they are and dream into their greatest potential. Most people know change is inevitable, so what happens when we are changing from the inside out?
Brian's idea of the journey of an origami crane he named OC began to unfold as he shared his words. His dream took flight with an origami crane, some other origami animals, and some guides. Brian's dream took form in the context of an actual city playground near our home. It was beneath the shade of the cottonwood trees that Brian's idea was birthed. I joined him in writing the allegory in pursuit of our dream to deepen our impact and further our reach to help people grow. We've taken turns breathing life into these words because this story maps to our lived experience.
Unfolded represents our own ups and downs of our journey. We are students of our own story. In each place of growth, transition, or pivot, we looked around and saw a cast of characters. We can name the people and places who shaped us as kids, young people, and adults. Both Brian’s and my journeys involved leading people, being on stages, and catalyzing movements.
Then our stories intersected both personally and professionally. As a married couple, we could tell you more about the community during my cancer battle, who was there in my doctoral pursuits, our injuries, failures, triumphs, and our travels around the world that helped us expand and focus our work with people. As individuals we've each had our own stories of unfolding and reshaping our lives.
Unfolded gives a nod to many of our clients in each season of our business and the leaders who have trusted us with their people. Unfolded represents how Brian and I create space between us for people to accept themselves, learn to flourish, and have some fun. We believe the journey of growth begins with reflection in order to make more meaningful moves. In the tens of thousands of people we have worked with one thing became clear: Brian and I seek to transform how leaders express their brilliance and beauty for the benefit of humanity.
The book begins with a Prelude by Brian. You will read the genesis of this work and the soul behind the idea. I invite you to read the Prelude, to get a glimpse of the Brian I see.
The five chapters tell the story of the Origami Crane named OC, who had a dream and went after it. Chapter 1, Dream, begins with OC's dream to fly. Chapter 2, Play, grounds the dream in practice disguised as play. Chapter 3, Try, describes the intentional practice in OC's attempts to fly, failures, and the need for unlearning to learn. Chapter 4, Fly, describes the flight and what can be learned when we soar. Chapter 5, Home, is where the invitation is to reflect and share.
