A God-inspired dream is an unquenchable fire that smolders in the heart.
Some refer to it as a “calling,” or a divine prompting that settles deep within our soul. It is the very essence of who we are created to be.
Do you have such a dream? Do you have a "nagging of the spirit" that will not go away?
Like being homesick for a place that you have yet to call home, a God-inspired dream is the vision of something that is not but longs to be.
We cannot escape such a vision. It returns to us again and again. Sometimes the longing is intense, like a painful hunger that we wish it would leave us.
I once asked God to remove the desire for a dream if He would never help me reach it. God did not remove my desire, but eventually, He did help me achieve it!
In every great Bible story, God’s chosen dreamer comes to a place where it looks like he or she will never reach their goal. The obstacles are too great to overcome and the giant is too powerful to beat. It's the time when all seems lost. The road is too hard and too long.
This is the time when many will quit. For those who press on, it’s the point where the story often takes a dramatic turn!
It is here, in the face of insurmountable odds, that we finally realize that only God can remove the mountains that stand in our way. We then come to the end of ourselves ― our schemes, strategies, talents, and human ingenuities ― and admit that we are not equipped to achieve our goal.
This is the moment when we discover that it is God ― and only GOD ― Who has the power to help us reach our dream. When we stay the course and submit to His will and His guidance, we will succeed.
I ask you:
Are you willing to stay the course?
Are you willing to submit to God’s will and guidance?
To trust God when your dream seems lost?
Last fall, as I prepared for an online study about finding God’s Promised Land for our lives, the circumstances of my own life became such that I had to lay the dream of finding my own “Promised Land” (that’s what I call my God-inspired dream) down.
How bizarre to begin an online study about crossing through a painful, dry wilderness and into a Promised Land, only to find myself unexpectedly miles away from reaching it?
There was only one thing I could do, and that was to lay my dream on the altar. If God wanted the dream to be, He would resurrect it when the time was right.
As I held out my open hands and gave that dream to God, I found the peace that I had been missing. I realized that I didn’t want to wrestle a dream to existence in my own power.
I only wanted to achieve the dream if God was the One who breathed it to life.
I could only achieve my God-sized dream by surrendering it to God!
I held out my broken dream to God and asked that He take it. I asked Him to take away the longing for it, too, but He would not. I was miles and miles from the place I envisioned, and yet the vision remained. When I finally surrendered, God blessed me with peace and joy that I did not expect.
Whenever the desire for a dream hurts too much and I am farther and farther away from my dream, I chose to pray these simple words:
“I trust you, Father.”
Oh, I could wrestle with God for this dream for the rest of my life. I could whine and complain and be angry and bitter because it is not yet mine.
Instead, I choose to find great joy in the journey. Each day there is some small hint that this dream will come to pass in time. I remind myself that I may, in fact, be nearer to it than I know!
And you? What dream do you have that you cannot let go? What comes to your mind when you are alone and quiet and God speaks in the quietness of your heart?
Learn to know and listen to His voice, my friend. Not the shrieking of our selfish desires, but the gentle stirring of the voice of God. His voice is usually quiet, but we can learn to recognize it.
If you are discouraged that the road to your dream is taking too long, remember this:
You are on a journey,
and the journey itself is wonderful!
I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.
Isaiah 42:15-17 (NIV)
In the next chapter, we’ll talk about the Promised Land that God has specifically prepared for YOU!
