Everything changes; change is constant in nature. With the passage of time, things change. You might be wondering what this has got to do with yoga. Well, yoga has undergone some change as well, and it has evolved. Let us take a look at the evolution of yoga.

Brief history of yoga

Yoga was invented about 5000 years ago. Its origin can be traced back to the Indus Valley. There have been stone carvings that were uncovered showing people sitting in meditative postures. This needs to be mentioned since it predates Hinduism. Some Egyptian images dating back to 5,000 years ago also show people in certain yogic poses. The history of yoga cannot be traced back effectively. 3500-2000 years ago, during the Vedic period, the Vedas were written. This forms the basis of Hinduism. Yogis during this period, believed in sharpening their minds by voluntarily living through hardships.

The Upanishads were written about 2500 years ago. The oldest known scripture dates back to the 500 BCE and it is referred to as Bhagavad-Gita
