Why New Years’s Eve?

In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve which is also known as Old Year's Day or Saint Sylvester's Day in many countries, December 31 I the last day of the year.

Why is it called New Year's Eve?

It goes back to Pope Silvester, whose date of death is December 31st, 335. At that time the end of the year was still on 24 December and was moved to 31 December in the 16th century.
