Chapter 1   MUDRAS

In Yoga Sadhana, the Mudras are also very important. The Mudras are complementary to the Asanas. In Asanas, the organs are important. But in Mudras, physiological organs are secondary. In our scripts, it has been said aptly about the Mudras “Nasti Mudra Samn Kinchit Siddhidan KshitimanDale”. This means, nothing is more beneficial than Mudras on the entire globe for achieving success in life.

For simplicity here we classify Mudras in two series: (i) differences of vital elements (Tatwas); and (ii) Kundalini Jagaran.

According to Vaidic science, the five fingers of the hand represent the Panch Tatwas; thumb (Pawak or Agni Tatwa or fire), fore finger (Sameer or Vayu Tatwa or wind), middle finger (Gagan or Akash Tatwa or sky), ring finger (Kshiti or Prithvi Tatwa or earth) and little finger (Jal Tatwa or water). The proper balance of these five vital elements makes the body healthy. Applying these Mudras, the eternal sense, internal glands and the latent energy of the body are stimulated and invoked.

(Note: These Mudras are made with fingers and produce desired results. All Mudras should be practiced from 10 minutes to one hour for complete advantage. If one can’t do this in one single sitting, they can do it by taking breaks in between.)

(I) Gyan Mudra (Agni Tatwa)

Touch the thumb and fore finger. Keep the rest of the fingers straight.

Advantage: It improves concentration and memory and makes the brain sharper. It has the power to control anger, sleeplessness and headache.

II) Vayu Mudra:

To perform this Mudra touch your thumb to the middle back portion of the fore finger and the fore finger should bend by 900. The rest of the fingers should be straight.

Advantage: Body pain, gastric problems, arthritis, rheumatism, joint pain and cramps can be cured by this Mudra. Blood circulation is improved too.

(III) Akash Mudra:

Touch the middle back portion of the middle finger with the thumb such that the middle finger gets bent and is touching the inner palm. Keep the rest of the fingers straight. Take deep breaths while practicing this Mudra.

Advantage: Thyroid, heart diseases, throat diseases, bone related diseases and disorders of ear can be cured by this Mudra.

(IV) Prithvi Mudra:

Apply a very slight pressure on the top of the ring finger with your thumb. Keep the rest of the fingers straight.

Advantage: It strengthens the body. It reduces extra fat and improves digestion.

(V) Jal Mudra:

Apply a little pressure on top of the little finger with the thumb. Take deep breaths.

Advantage: It can cure the skin related problems, disorders in blood, pimples, rashes, acne, dry skin etc. and makes the skin healthy and glowing.

(VI) Surya Mudra:

This Mudra should be performed at the end of all the other Mudras. Press slightly at the root at the back of the ring finger with the thumb.

Advantage: This Mudra improves overall health and helps to decrease cholesterol level. It can cure diabetes and reduce weight and extra fat.

Chapter 2   AYURVEDA PANCHAKARMA

What is Pancha Karma?

The Pancha Karma is a specific practice of Ayurveda to clean and purify the entire body. It clears out all the impurities and toxins. It is a system of bio-purification. A common problem with today’s medicines is that some patients are resistant to the medicines while some suffer from their side effects. Another thing is that many a times there is no permanent cure. Why is that so?

An answer to this question is provided by the first physician (probably of the human civilization) Rishi Charak. He said that if we use medicines and chemicals to treat diseases, it will increase the toxins in our body. Also the body either reacts or becomes passive to the medications. At this stage, the medicines do not give the desired effect. Rishi Charak believed that natural purification of the entire body is the way to cure diseases. All other methods won’t keep the patient healthy for long. He added that if the patient is not fully cured even after this purification, then he may take a little medicine which will give a satisfactory final result.

System of Pancha Karma

In Pancha Karma, there are five main processes of purification: (i) Snehan (massage), (ii) Swedan (sweating), (iii) Vaman (vomiting), (iv) Virechan (purgation), and (v) Nirooh or Vasti (enema).

According to Ayurveda, Upavas (fasting), Falahar (fruit diets), Nirooh Vasti (enema), Abhyang (massage), Swedan (sweating), and Bhap Snan (steam bath) are very beneficial in treating and uprooting diseases from the body. It is also known as Naturopathy or Nisargopchar. It not only cures the disease but repairs and restores the body. And it provides a complete Kaya Kalp (transmutation) of the body so that it becomes fresh, pure and healthy as in childhood. Apart from this, it ensures a healthy and long life.

In the system of Panchkarma, all natural gifts such as: wind, water, earth, sunlight, oils, fruits, milk, vegetables, herbs and spices are used to treat or purify the patient.

The Panchkarma is not only for patients but it is useful for every person irrespective of whether he is ill or not. Like washing and cleaning of clothes, house etc. is necessary; eating, bathing, ejaculating etc. are necessary to clean the body organs externally and internally; similarly the Panchakarma is necessary to clear the internal toxins to repair, revive and rejuvenate the body organs.

An expert practitioner of Panchakarma can easily dignose the cause of the disease. And according to Ayurveda he can treat the patient by Panchakarma. Such a person knows where the obstruction or disturbance is and how it can be removed. But the only problem is that this process works slowly and takes a long time. Therefore both the physician and the patient should keep patience during the treatment of Panchakarma.

The modern pharmacopeia system is based on toxicology. Although the modern system of allopathic treatment provides prompt relief it produces many side effects which can give rise to other diseases in future.

When allopathic modern treatment is unable to cure the patient, when all attempts and efforts are useless, the Ayurvedic Panchakarma revives the patient successfully. Therefore, both the physician and the patient should have faith and should continue the natural Panchakarma treatment.

Our body naturally purifies itself by sneezing, cough and cold, coryza, purgating, vomiting, sweating etc. These are natural, automatic and self forced curative acts.

1:   Snehan (massage):

In the Panchakarma, the first step is massage. The Snehan is used to clean out the impurities in our body. In this process many medicated oils, Ghee etc. are used.

By Sehan and Swedan, all the rheumatic disorders are cured.

There are three ways in which Snehan works:

(i)

Vrihan:

Snehan rejuvenates the flesh, fat, marrow, semen etc. It develops the body by increasing and empowering the Agni (bodily fire).

(ii)

Shaman:

Snehan cures various disorders by its oily, cool and seminal properties.

(iii)

Shodhan:

By Snehan, the sources which create disorders are transferred to the intestines. Thus, the Snehan helps to excrete the filth through feces.

Snehan is a preliminary and important part of the Panchakarma. The ingredients are chosen according to the nature of disorders: in mild and chronic pyraxia- Pippyaladi Ghreet; in rhuematism – Vala Tail; in Amla-pitta – Drakshawaleh or wet currants are used for massage.

2:   Swedan (Steam Bath):

It is the process of sweating. Sweat excretes the oxidized impurities of the cells. The Swedan Kriya causes the pores of the skin to open up. The natural sweating process helps protect the body from many disorders. In common fever, it is desirable that the patient sweat so as to reduce the fever and complications.

The sweating makes the body comfortable and stress free because it excretes the filth.

In this process, steam bath is mainly used. Steam heats up the body; this increases blood circulation and opens the pores. Mainly this helps clean out the mucus of the body organs and it improves appetite too.

In Ayurveda, there are thirteen kinds of steams used:

Sankar Bhap,

Prastar Bhap,

Nadi Bhap,

Parishek Bhap,

Avagahan Bhap,

Jentak Bhap,

Ashvamadhan Bhap,

Karna Bhap,

Kuti Bhap,

Bhoo Bhap,

Kumbhi Bhap,

Koop Bhap and

Holak Bhap.

For sweating, the steam is applied to local parts of the body according to the requirement. Sometimes the whole body may need a steam bath except the head.

In summer, the steam is applied for 10–15 minutes whereas in winter it is extended by 20–30 minutes. If sweating does not place in this duration then application time can be extended. If it causes agitation or discomfort then the treatment should be stopped.

After coming out of the steam bath it is advisable to bathe with lukewarm water (or in some cases, with fresh water). Avoid exposure just after getting out of the cabin.

(Note: Take one glass of fresh water before the steam bath and wrap a wet towel around the head. Continue to wet the towel during the steam bath to protect the head from overheating. If one feels weakness or discomfort after the steam bath, they should take Kati Snan for a few minutes. The testicles, heart and eyes should be protected from the steam as they already have a higher temperature than the rest of the body. The steam bath should be taken only two or three times in a week.

3:   Vaman (vomitting)

The Vaman is a drug induced emesis. Through this process the vitiated doshas (toxins) are eliminated from the body. The treatment lasts for eight days. The Vaman is beneficial for everyone because it causes the body to emit mucus. Vomiting makes one feel fresh. It improves metabolism.

In the process of Vaman, some emetic preparation is given to the patient, which causes the patient to vomit.

In Panchkarma, the Snehan and Swedan are applied before the Vaman. By Snehan and Swedan, cause the body to excrete filth but they are not able to excrete mucus or saliva. Vaman also causes saliva or phlegm to be excreted out of mouth.

The present modern clinical procedure to excrete saliva or phlegm out of mouth is Ryle’s tube. But there is a great difference between Panchakarma (Vaman) and the Ryle’s tube. Whereas the R-tube excretes only the normally collected phlegm in the stomach, Vaman collects the mucus and phlegm from the body in the stomach and then excretes it out. Thus, Vaman of Panchakarma refreshes all the three Doshas (Vata-Pitta-Kafa). It also helps in curing asthmatic disorders and arthritis.

Indications: The Vaman is beneficial for cough, laryngitis, pharingitis, excessive sleep, insomnia, lethargy, ulcers in mouth or on tongue, saliva problems, bad breath, over discharge of phlegm, T.B., asthma, coryza, cold, headache and migraine.

Contra-indications: It is advised not to talk loudly, sit for long, stand and walk a lot, be angry; over cooling and overheating; depression; intercourse; remaining awake at night and sleeping during the day; spicy diet; obstructing urine, feces, breath, sneeze and eructation are strictly prohibited during Panchakarma treatment.

Because the appetite becomes poor after the Vaman and there’s a bad taste in the mouth, the patient should be served light drinks and soups after the Vaman. Gradually they should be given the common vegetarian diet. This is also known as Samsarjan Kriya.

4:   Virechan (purgation):

Virechan is drug induced purgation (without laxatives). It removes toxins from the body. This method is used in the treatment for constipation and various skin disorders. Some people take laxatives, while some doctors use enema of soap, soda-bicarb, glycerin etc. as enema to clear the intestine. It is obvious that an enema given in the wrong manner of wrong composition can harm the patient. But the Ayurvedic drug induced enema (Virechan of Panchakarma) has no such problems. The Virechan provides the patient purity of mind, strength of body organs, stability of Dhatus (hormonal stability), increased zeal, improvement of digestion and appetite, protection from the effects of old age.

The Virechan is advised 15 days after Vaman. After Vaman the patient should take complete rest for six days before returning to the normal diet gradually. After that he should be treated with Shirodhara; cold and hot Kati Snan using a wet towel. For 6 days after that he should be given suitable massages. By doing all this, the patient recovers his appetite. During these 14–15 days the patient should be treated with Swedan and should be given a good diet. And finally on the 16th day, the Virechan treatment should be started.

Process of Virechan:

The Virechan in advised on an empty stomach in the morning. Before this, the patient is advised to take hot and oily liquid diet on the previous night. During Virechan, the patient should protect himself from exposure to direct wind. Also the patient is advisedly to repeatedly take fresh water.

Best results of Virechan mean as much as 30 motions. If it stops at 20 motions, it is considered medium Virechan and if it produces only 10 motions, then that means that the treatment has been only half successful.

Sometimes, the medicine used for Virechan can produce vomiting due to which the medicine will be emitted out. This can happen because of excess of phlegm and saliva, bad odor of the medicinal preparation, excess drinking of water during Virechan, anorexia or undigested food taken the previous night. Don’t worry if such a thing happens. Just treat the patient to Snehan and Swedan before giving the next dose of purgatives. After Virechan, serve the patient light and easily digestible liquid diets, same as the ones given after Vaman.

5:   Basti or Enema

Basti is the heart & soul of Panchakarma therapy. Basti is the procedure wherein medicinal oils are injected in the rectum through anus. This helps in improving the bowel movement. The oil that is injected in the body is absorbed and passed out with the stool after a few hours. In this process herbal medicines are used to prepare the enema by dissolving them in suitable oils. The medicinal Quaths (decoction) are prepared from oils, lemon juice, proteins (flesh soup), Amaltas, Triphala, milk, Ghee, salt etc.

Though Basti is used for Nadi Shodhan (purification of nerves, arteries, veins and capillaries), it is beneficial for the entire body.

Basti cures all kinds of disorders (Tridoshas such as: Vata, Pitta and Kafa). Among these three basic causes, Vat (gas) is the one which is predominant. Therefore, by treating the disorders of Vat, the rest (Pitta and Kaf) are also cured because they are dependent of Vat. Vat plays the main role in disturbing the circulatory, respiratory alimentary and nervous systems. Vat acts as the carrier, conductor and controller of all kinds of anatomical and physiological activities.

Therefore, by treating Vata caused disorders, we can cure nearly all the disorders. And Basti is the best way for controlling the disturbances caused by Vat.

Basti is applied in three ways:

(i)     Niruhan

(ii)    Anuvasan

(iii)   Uttar Basti

Advantage:

By the application of Basti, a weak patient becomes stronger whereas a fat man can lose weight. Basti is beneficial in curing vision problems, hair fall, wrinkles (mostly facial wrinkles) and maintaining a healthy and strong body.

The author is well acquainted with the miraculous advantage of Panchakarma as she has been using it as a treatment in her clinic since many years.

In fact, a Panchakarma practitioner should have perfect knowledge of the medicinal properties of herbs and other things. He should also have proper knowledge of the diseases.

Conditions of the Basti

If Basti (enema) has to clear out duodenum; make the patient lie in lateral position while applying enema. Always keep the hip up by 4–5 inches during the Basti Kriya. Hang the enema tank 4–5 feet above the ground and ensure that there is no air in the enema pipe. Apply lubricating oil on the nozzle of the pipe. Now insert the nozzle in the anus and let the fluid flow in to the rectum and intestines as per requirement.

After five minutes, start counting down from 1200 to zero. Wait for a strong motion. Do not try to the feces out. Let it be excreted by itself. Continue to massage your abdomen with your palms. Stay in the toilet for 25 minutes. After that your stomach should be clear.

Keep fasting with Falahar (taking only fruits as dinner) and use enema (Basti) of lukewarm water and lemon juice daily for a few days until you feel better. One should not practice Basti in a standalone manner. Practice Falahar with it for proper treatment.

Nasya kiriya

Applying oil in nostrils is called Nasya. It strengthens the sensory centers of the brain. This positively impacts the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. In this process, herbal or Ayurvedic medicines prepared in oil are used as nasal drops. It cures problems of head and neck. The modern scientific treatment of Allopathy also recommends using nasal dropsfor these problems.

For the Nasya Kriya, lie down on the bed and use the nasal drops as recommended by the expert.

The nose being the only gateway to the head, the drops spread in the head. This treatment is effective in curing the problems of nose, ears, eyes, throat and head etc. parts am\long with the lungs.

In this way, Vaman clears out the stomach, oesophagus, throat and mouth; Virechan (loose motion) clears out the abdomen; Nirooh and Anuvasan (Basti) washes out the intestines; Nasya (nasal drops) cleans the nose, ears, eyes and head; and the Swedan Krtiya (steam bathing) excretes the impurities and fat by sweating.

Thus Panchakarma is a scientific and natural process which cleans and purifies the body without any side effects or any toxic effects.

By the Nasya Kriya, all the problems which are related to phlegm and saliva are cured as the phlegm comes out of the nostrils having been liquefied by the Nasya Kriya. Thus the obstructions of these parts are removed and blood circulation and respiration is improved. Therefore the problems related to eyes, ears, neck, nose and hair are cured naturally.

The Nasya Kriya is also beneficial in headache, migraine, facial paralysis, depression, memory loss and vocal problems.

The Nasya Kriya is of five kinds:

(i) Navan Nasya, (ii) Awapidan Nasya, (iii) Dhyapan nasya, (iv) Dhoop Nasya, and (v) Pratimarsh Nasya.

Precautions during Nasya:

During and after the Nasya Kriya, the room should be airy, dustless, smoke free and peaceful.

Nasya Kriya can be performed either in lying or sitting position. After applying the Nasya, exposure to direct sun light, laughing, riding in jerking vehicles, anger, toxic addictions, mental shocks, chilled and hot water, curd and meat should be avoided.

You can practice Pratimarsh Nasya every day. In this process, lie or sit straight and hold your nose up by bending your head back. Now use the nasal drops. Lukewarm mustard oil is generally used for daily Nasya. Apart from this, the juice of Madan Fal (a type of fruit) can also be used.

Advantage:

This type of Nasya Kriya makes a person calm, happy, helps him sleep better and gives him a long life. It is very effective for curing problems related to the upper part of the body (from neck to the head).

Abhyang (massage):

In Indian culture, massage is said to be good for new born baby or neonate child for rapid growth. Due to this massage, blood circulation improves. It increases the oxygen level and removes the blockages and impurities. Due to the warmth generated by the massage, the excess fat is also diluted and excreted out..

In fact, getting a massage everyday can keep a person away from all kinds of diseases all his life. The author herself has experienced this and has been perfectly healthy, strong and active all her life. Apart from this, she treats her patients (in her clinic in Sweden) with this massage and gets excellent results.

There are many instances where the author has seen this massage prove extremely beneficial. When the hospital authorities had advised the patients to get surgery done and due to some pathological and ultrasonic disturbances they could not be operated on at that time, they came to this massage clinic. The author treated them with this massage and the patients were cured after just 2–4 massage sessions.

Process of Massage

Generally, the movement of the massage should be directed towards the heart from the starting point so that the blood should circulate quickly towards the heart. But if the patient has any heart problem or high blood pressure, in his case the massage should be directed in reverse direction.

Because massage improves blood circulation, the working capacity of the body organs is increased. Thus it cures the patient by strengthening the lungs, kidneys and intestines by purifying them.

According to Panchakarma, Ayurveda and Naturopathy, these are some of the oils which can be used for massage:

Chandan ka Tail (sanDal oil)

Mahanarayan Tail,

Vishgarbha Tail,

Satawari Tail,

Sandhivat Tail,

Mahamas Tail,

Sankhpushpi Tail,

Triphaladi Tail,

Amla Tail,

Til Tail,

Sarson ka Tail,

Badam Tail,

Panchvati Tail,

Bhringraj Tail, etc._

Sirodhara

In this system, a stream of medicated oil is poured slowly and continuously on the forehead. The use of medicine in the oil and the duration of the treatment depends on the condition of the patient. Sirodhara is recommended for patients with high blood pressure and debility.

For diseases related to gas (Vat), Sirodhara is advised for 55–60 minutes, in bile related diseases 45 minutes and in cough or phlegm related disorders 35 minutes.

The continuous flow of lukewarm medicated oils should be aimed at the middle or central portion of the forehead, about 5” away from the eyebrows. The oil pot should be suspended about 3–4 feet above the head.

Sirodhgara should be applied for 12 days regularly. This will require more than one litre of oil.

Advantage:

Sirodhara is beneficial for high blood pressure, paralysis, chronic migraine pain, insomnia, Parkinson’s disease, Vata, Pitta and Kafa Doshas, hair fall, baldness, memory loss and deafness.

There is an alternate process called Sirobasti. In this process, the head is covered with a cap. The patient’s head is covered with a pot which is filled to a depth of about 1.5 inches with lukewarm medicated oil. The cap should be sealed to the head with the grinded paste of Urad Dal (horse bean).

The duration of treatment with Sirobasti is similar to that with Sirodhara. If the nostrils start to discharge phlegm; stop Sirobasti. The process is continued for 11 days regularly.

Netra Tarpan:

In this process, make a circular (ring shaped) well around the eyes of the patient (the patient should be lying down) with the grinded paste of unbaked horse bean. Now fill up the well with lukewarm Ghee processed with Triphala. The patient should rotate his pupils in clock-wise and then anti clock-wise direction, then up and down, and then left and right directions.

Continue this exercise for 20–25 minutes. One can also use the swimming cup for eyes available in the market.

Advantage:

Colour blindness, glaucoma, poor-vision, iritis, pain and inflammation of eyes and redness of eyes can be cured with Netra Tarpan. Apart from this there is also the possibility of curing far sightedness.

Kati Basti:

In this treatment, the grinded paste of horse bean is used to make a well on the portion of the body which is in pain. In this well, the medicated lukewarm oil or the pain killer oil should be filled to a depth of 2–3 inches for 50 minutes. The Patra Pindi SwEdan can also be applied the affected area.

Advantage:

It can cure the sciatic and rheumatic pains and inflammations.

Pidischhil Dhara:

In this procedure, the patient is treated with anti-rheumatic medicated oils as in Sirodhara.
