Epilogue
Dr. Margareta Andersson gave me the idea to write a book aboutAyurveda.Thank you.
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian science of healthy lifestyle. It is not only a system of treatment but a complete lifestyle. It is in total synergy with the nature and protects the mankind (also the other living beings) from unnatural and artificial disorders. The original script of Ayurveda is a part of Vedas (universal science). Ayurveda means knowledge of life (Sanskrit Ayur “life” and Veda “knowledge).
The physiology of the body is divided into seven categories in Ayurveda which we call seven Dhatus. According to Ayurveda, our body is made up of seven constituents:
1. Ras (chyle or plasma),
2. Rakta (haemoglobin or blood),
3. Maans (flesh or muscles and tissues),
4. Medh (fat or oil),
5. Asthi (bones),
6. Mazza (bone-marrow), and
7. Shukra or Virya (semen or sperm / ova).
Whatever diet we take is diverted into two parts after its digestion; Sar (essence or pith) and Mal (feces or waste material). Consequently, the essence (abstract) of the meal produces seven Dhatus accordingly. First of all the digested food essence produces the Ras (chyle or plasma) which converts by self in to Rakta (blood). The Rakta produces Maans (muscle tissue); Maans produces Medh; Medh produces asthi; Asthi produces Mazza; Mazza produces Virya or semen or ova; and finally, the ova and sperm produce together a new creation of mankind. Thus, our meal advances from Ras to Virya step by step.
These Dhatus also have a balanced ratio in the body. When it gets misbalanced, it creates disorders. Different disorders are caused by different Dhatus. A deficiency of a particular Dhatu is called Dhatu-dosh.
Ayurveda has a wide range of treatment with herbal, mineral, chemical, organic and inorganic etc. medicines. Mostly the herbal treatment is popular among the common people. Our expert physicians (Ayurved-acharyas etc.) do use all kinds of remedies in their treatments.
First of all, Ayurveda introduces the process of diagnosis of the disorders of the body. In this regard, the human body-disorders can be classified into three categories; such as: Vata or Vayu (wind or gas), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (phlegm or saliva or body-plasma)”.
To acknowledge the real cause of diseases, we should follow the instructions related to all these three factors:
(a)Vata (wind or body-air):
The characteristic property of the body-air is recognized as: harsh, cool, mild, acute, dry, uneven and non-sticky. When the body-air flows properly, it manages the body chemistry well and it produces a distinct identification which is discernible to an expert. But when, there appears any disorder in the body, the wind is not in its normal state and produces different symptoms. Thus, the real condition of the body-air is diagnosed according to the symptoms of the body functions. On the other hand, the body-air causes the disorders and it cures the disorders also.
Where all the three factors (Kapha, Vata and Pitta) are counter-balanced, the body is completely healthy. And, if any disturbance appears it imbalances the Trio, and the body becomes ill. Therefore, this ‘Trio’ is the origin of disorders and it is also the remedy of the disorders.
Kinds of body-air (Vata, Vayu)
The oldest book regarding ayurveda, written in sanskrit.
According to different type of Vata (Vayu or air) and its deficiency, different type of disorders appear. Therefore, they are diagnosed and treated differently; as such:
Increase of Vata (Vayu or body-air) in the body is a kind of disorder by itself which causes different types of diseases such as: dryness, body-cramps, pinching pain, osteoporosis (weakness in bones), stiffness, weakness, senselessness in organs, constipation, spasmodic and colic pain, weak nails, dental disorders, pallor of skin and bitter taste in mouth.
How Vata related disorders appear in our body
The body-air gets unbalanced due to suppression the forces and desires like urination, sneezing, love, sadness or sorrow, hunger or other needs etc. Similarly, it is negatively affected by sparing sleep, hard or laborious work, anxiety, too much of sex, over fasting, fear, over-eating, cold and frosted food.
Treatment of Vata
Massage
Panchakarma of Ayurveda is the best way of treatment of Vata related disorders. If one cannot go for Panchakarma treatment, there is a very potent household remedy too, made up of Ghee and Triphala Churna.
Take one tsp of Ghee and one tsp of Trifala Churna with lukewarm water in the morning (empty stomach). Drink until stomach gets full.
Use hot water bath or steam bath. In this process, wrap a wet towel around your head and take a steam bath until you feel the body pores starting to open up. Do this for a few days until the problem is cured. After the problem is solved, stop hot water baths and change it to a foot-bath. In foot-bath, take a bucket or tub full of hot water and put both the feet into the bucket. During this use also a wet towel over the head otherwise you can feel some inconvenience, or, it can cause the Vat to extend more. Also use a blanket to cover the body while undergoing a foot-bath. Afterward, take some bananas along with Ghee. There are some other tips for this treatment; as below:
Use Ghee with lukewarm milk
Ghee and Trifala Churna
Steam bath
Taking the hot water bath
and steam bath Enema of Amaltas-pulp and castor-oil.
Excess oils/ fats, spicy and flavored food, stale foods, heavy foods, and sour-foods etc. are harmful and indigestible.
Castor-oil and garlic are useful. Wheat breads, milk and molasses are suitable for meals.
Pitta (bile)
Characteristic properties of Pitta
Pitta is characteristically warm or hot, mildly smooth or oily, over digestive, inflammatory, acutely sour, mildly energetic and yellow colored. The patient suffering from unbalance of bile has the characteristic nature of strong nails and teeth. Also, he is rigid or drastic in his thoughts.
Following are the parts of the body where there is presence of Pitta: small intestine, liver, spinal cord, gall bladder, kidney, heart, pancreas and uterus etc. organs.
Persons whose bile secretions are unexpectedly high are known as patients of Pitta Dosh. They are also recognized by their bile-natured character. Pitta having the nature of fire can be both life-giving (energetic) and harmful too. A person with Pitta character survives and perishes both because of his Pitta. Similarly we can observe characteristic nature in Vat and Kapha also. The author has had many profound experiences in this realm in her practice of over 25 years, each experience being distinct from the other.
The bilious person is characteristically honest, sociable,
materialistic and spiritualist. He cannot tolerate excess heat because the bile is of hot nature by itself.
Properties and efficiencies of Pitta (bile)
Symptoms of excessive Pitta:
Excess hunger, burning sensation in abdomen and chest, anorexia, mouth-sores, blisters in mouth, pimples in nose, ears, neck and face, excessive sweat, insomnia, excessive anger, delusion, acidic reflux, presence of bitter and sour taste in the acidic reflux which are actually the toxins of the body, whole body pain, sore throat, phlegmic obstructions, spitting very often, poor vision-power, yellow eyes and teeth, red-eyes, enlarged abdomen and flatulence etc. are the common symptoms of Pitta Dosh.
Causes of excess bile secretions
The bilious unbalance occurs due to excessive use of: Red and dry chilly, stale and junk foods, intoxicating drinks and smokes etc., randomly taking of meal without any fixed routine, excessive sex, dry foods, taking excessive hot or cold foods, working or staying up at night, indigestion, anger, spicy, oily, fried and sour foods, fear, frustration or disappointment, meat, fishes and curd etc. stimulate excessive bile secretion or cause unbalance of bile functions.
Control of bile disorders
To control or balance bile secretion, one needs to be aware of his diet, especially during the treatment. Some useful remedies are:
1. Take Ghee along with Trifala powder;
2. Use simple and non-spicy or non-flavored diets;
3. Use enema of Amaltas-pulp along with castor-oil to clear the intestines;
4. Take milk along with Ghee;
5. Take banana along with Ghee. This clears out the abdomen and which protects from gastritis.
6. Take enough water early in the morning as to fill up the stomach.
7. One can take Amla-juice in place of water;
8. The water kept in a copper-pot is more suitable to use in this regard.
Kapha (phlegm)
The nature of Kapha is heavy, cool, mild, pungent and smooth or greasy, sweet and stable. It is whitish in color and sometimes even yellowish or white-yellow. Kapha collects mostly in abdomen, chest, pancreas, urinary tracts and testes.
Properties of Kapha:
Symptoms of excessive Kapha:
The characteristic symptoms of excessive Kapha (phlegm) are: Oversleeping, tastelessness, cold, cough, itching, congestion of mind (heavy head), headache, oily skin and serious mood.
Reasons for Kapha unbalance:
Kapha increases due to: eating excess sweets, sour, cold diets, milk, curd; unpunctuality in taking meal, unpunctuality in sleeping; taking sweet and sour foodstuffs together, taking of horse-bean (pulses), banana with salt (in over dose); potato, radish etc. vegetables which grow beneath the earth; cucumber, pumpkin, custard apple, oil of Til (sesame seeds), coconut, water melon etc.
Treatment of Kapha
Excess or imbalanced Kapha is treated according to Indian traditional system and Ayurveda. Food having characteristic property of warm nature are advised for Kapha imbalance.
Some acts like: Neti, Kunjal and Dhauti etc. Kriyas are so useful in Kapha deficiency. These exercises are advised by both Ayurveda and naturopathy. Similarly, the act of Nasya Kriya excretes the dense and dried cough out of the body.
The cough (Kapha) also has its many categories in which five are the main ones. As Allopathy does not have knowledge of these categories, more often than not cough gets dry or suppressed by the Allopathic treatments. Such dry cough can also promote certain problems later. Ayurveda in contrast not only provides curative treatment but also introduces a complete way of excretion of such cough. In Ayurveda there are at least five systems of treatment of cough; such as:
(i)Kledak, (ii) Awalambak, (iii) Bodhak, (iv) Tarpak and (v) Shleshak.
Kinds of Cough (Kapha)
(i) Thick or dense cough: The thick and yellow cough has an adhesive property. It emits a bad odor, breaks or stops eructation and causes loss of appetite. It is a typical and harmful troublesome condition of cough.
(ii) Lather cough: It is less thick. In water, it spreads over the surface area. It has no smell. It protects the eyes, nose and mouth from dryness and keeps them wet and moisturized.
(iii) Severe cough: It produces so many complications which affect the health of the entire body, such as: sinus, bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, hoping cough, and allergy etc. disorders.
(iv) Chronic cough: It dissolves in the blood-vessels and thickens the blood and finally getting collected as adhesive elements at the bone-joints. Thus it promotes some typical and incurable diseases; such as rheumatic arthritis or gout-pain, sciatica, lumber-pain, migraine and headache etc.
Natural and traditional treatments of cough
There are at least six kinds of Rasa (tastes) among all the dietary things; such as:
i. Sweet
ii. Sour
iii. Alkaline or salty
iv. Bitter
v. Pungent
vi. Spicy
Every dietary food reserves at least one of the above tastes. If we could know all the properties, utilities and effectivities of these all tastes, we can keep ourselves healthy and young for long by following them.
We know that Ayurveda provides three main reasons for the bodily disorders of all kind. It means, there are three categories of all the diseases: Vat (gastric and nervous disorders), Pitta (Bilious or inflammatory disorders) and Kapha (cough or painful disorders).
All the aforementioned tastes are inter-related to these three categories of diseases.
In problems of Vata Dosh (gastric etc. disorders): sweet, sour and alkaline tastes are provided, and so, we should use suitable fruits, grains, vegetables etc. diets according to our characteristic problems.
In Pitta Dosh (bilious etc. problems): The acute, sharp bitter, pungent and sweet diets are advised warmly.
In Kapha-Dosh (phlegmic or cough etc. disorders): The pungent, spicy and bitter tastes and related diets are useful.
In this way, all the problems can be naturally by just choosing the right diet. Our traditional physicians (Vaidyas) used these characteristic tastes (diets and behaviors) of the categorized patients and cure them with the natural treatments with great success.
Apart from this, for matters of classification diseases are sub-categorized into seven sub-classes, such as:
(i) Vata (gas), (ii) Pitta (bilious) (iii) Kapha (phlegm-ous or cough) (iv) Vata-Pitta (gas & bile), (v) Pitta-Kapha (bilious and phlegmous), (vi) Vata-Kapha (gas and phlegmous) and (vii) Sam Dosh (equality of all the three humors). These are the seven characteristic classification of the human-body problems.
The child or kid gets his characteristic nature when he/she is in the fetus according to the constitution of his DNA. This characteristic nature is a natural gift, and cannot be changed or modified easily. One can modify or change his character and nature by practicing Raj Yoga (a system of meditation) along with changing and controlling his dietary sources or diets. Both the above systems should be applied in guidance of any expert (master or Guru) of Yoga.
If one needs to be of a balanced character (Sam-Prakriti), one ought to adopt the natural system of Ayurveda so that the conditions of Vata, Pitta and Kapha are counterbalanced. If any of them is imbalanced, the situation should be controlled or managed by the act of necessary purification (Sodhan Kriya); such as:
In case of increased Vata Dosh (gas), apply Basti Kriya (enema).
In case of Pitta-dosh (increased bile), apply Virechan Kriya (purgatives or laxatives).
In case of Kapha-Dosh (phlegmic), apply Vaman Kriya (vomiting)
In cold season (in India Nov-Feb): In this season, because the Jatharagni (figurative fire within the stomach which helps to digest the food) gets reasonably stimulated, and therefore, we should take oily or fatty and sweet meals. To restore the energy in cold season, it is advised to use milk, and Ghee mostly. Commonly, the molasses, Ghee, til (sesame seeds), groundnut, pinni (a kind of sweetmeat made of assorted nuts), horse-bean pak (Urad-Pak), dry fruits etc. should be taken. Amla, plums, dates, sugar-canes, tomatoes, egg plants, carrots, and spinach and other seasonal fruits are useful. Through this way, one can get rid of old age and attain a healthy body too.
In summer season: As the temperature is so high in the summer season, therefore, the collected or stored cough (phlegm) gets diluted by self. Thus in the months of March-April one should intake coriander, gram, dry and thick bread (flat bread or Chapati) and other hard and heavy diets. When the temperature increases, the bile ducts get over heated which causes the Jatharagni to break down. In this condition, the patient suffers with diarrhea, vomiting and other abdominal problems. In such condition, one should take fewer diets and should drink lemon-water, whey (separated from curd), green unripe mango drinks, sugarcane juice and other light food supplements. Such a diet uplifts the patients and makes them happy and easy, so that they can fulfill their duties normally.
In Rainy season: In this damp weather, the influence of gastric problems is increased. Due to dampness of rainy days, the digestion power of the stomach is decreased and the food is not digested properly. Thus, we contract illness more often. During the four months of rainy season, to get natural protection from the disorders of rainy season, one should control ones diet and limit one’s meals to only once in a day. It is the best way if one takes light foods once in a day. On the other hand, one can take light drinks of fruit-juice, lemon juice along with ginger. This should be continued regularly.
In spring season: In this season, the collected cough inside our body starts to liquefy due to change in temperature. This leads to cough and cold, flue and fever and other bronchial problems. To get relief from these problems, Ayurveda introduces a unique remedy ‘Mahasudarshan Churna’.
In winter season: In this season, as there are a few clouds over the sky, the weather becomes oppressive. Due to this weather, the Pitta Prakop (bilious attack) is very common which leads to fever, flu and vomiting etc. problems. It also promotes allergic asthma, bronchitis, pneumo-bronchitis like. fatal diseases. During this period one should take light and digestible foods which should neither be too cold nor too hot. The milk-products, nectar, butter, Ghee, cream and milk-sweets are also advised in this season.
Note: One should not take whey, curd, vinegar etc. in this season.
Before starting food one should wash hands firmly and to take the diet in a pleasant manner. One should chew the food properly. According to the principle of Ayurveda, one should chew a single bite of food at least for 32 times. This will make digestion easier and provide a healthy body and fresh mind. It also improves the appetite as the stomach has to work less to digest the food. [This author does follow this method also and she feels the benefit of doing so.]
Therefore, while having your meal, don’t have any urgency. Please avoid unnecessary laughter during a meal. Do not run behind only taste only, forsaking heath altogether and also avoid over-eating. Avoid fried, artificially flavored, stale, spicy and indigestible foods because they are harmful to the human health.
Eat only in morning, afternoon and evening (night) so that the liver functions keep well. Your dinner should be light and easily digestible.
Taking rest, not sleep after lunch and walking half un hour after supper (at night) is good for health.
Six to eight hours of sleeping is necessary to keep the body healthy and recharged. Therefore, one must go to the bed and leave the bed at appropriate times, because it takes very less time to fall ill (for any one) while it takes a long time to get well.
Barley, maize and millet etc. like cold and uneven cereals produce gas. Therefore, one suffering from gastric problem should not eat these foods. Millet, oil, chilly etc. are characteristically hot and bilious. Therefore, the bilious patients should also avoid these food items. Wheat, new rice, oil and Ghee etc. are cough producing. Therefore, the cough related patients should use these foods properly. One, who doesn’t follow the proper digestive system or goes against the nature, falls ill.
