CHAPTER 1
Beagle Introduction
The loveable, cheerful Beagle is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world today. Beagles hover around the fifth-place spot on most lists of popular dog breeds, falling in just behind Golden Retrievers, Labs, and Bulldogs. It is easy to see why. Beagles have a lot to offer. As a hunting companion, their skills are impressive. As a member of the family, there are loyal, good-tempered, and just the right size. It is no wonder that Charles Schultz chose to include a Beagle named Snoopy into his popular Peanuts comic strip, making this cartoon pooch the most famous Beagle in the world.
Beagles are happy, loving, and loyal…the perfect family dog.
The Beagle is one of the smaller members of the hound family. Like all scent hounds, they were developed to track a hunter’s prey, in particular, rabbits. In fact, the act of hunting rabbits in England was referred to as “beagling.” Beagles are often depicted in paintings and artwork of Great Britain, especially in hunting scenes. Years of fine-tuning the breed has left us with Beagles that are alert, task-oriented, and focused, with enough stamina for the long chase.
