Preface

Over time, anthropogenic activities for commercialization and livelihood needs have placed an immense amount of stress on the planet, which has increased our vulnerabilities on a large scale. The only solution to these disasters lies in awareness, preparedness and disaster risk reduction, which can be attained through scientific means.

Through the spatial understanding of natural- and human-induced hazards, policymakers can make vigilant decisions to minimize the harmful effects of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions and anthropogenic disasters such as nuclear, industrial and environmental. The management strategies such as activities, awareness campaigns, proactive initiatives and use of early warning systems can play an important role in the minimization of its impact on people and their properties.

The world has a physical and economic dilemma for humans since it is prone to several natural and man-made disasters each year. It will be tough to handle the numerous obstacles that arise after a disaster if no preparation is made. After critically analyzing different types of disasters and vulnerabilities, the book concludes that complete prevention of natural and anthropogenic disasters is not possible, however, we can reduce their effects through disaster risk reduction and preparedness measures, minimizing the damage and destruction caused by the disasters in India with a long-term perspective. These are effective tools for the management of disasters, which are discussed in a lucid way throughout the book.
