Foreword

Suppose your life were a car. Do you know which question matters far more than whether you picture a blue compact, a red family car, or a black convertible? It’s whether you’re in the driver’s seat or the passenger seat—who’s holding the steering wheel in this car: your life.

Are you the one who turns the ignition, sets the navigation, and decides the speed? That’s great! Then this book will equip you with powerful tools to keep you there. Or do you hand over the steering and driving to someone else—“fate,” your boss, your surroundings, or politics? If you’re in the latter group, don’t worry. Many people end up in the passenger seat of their lives without even realizing it. Perhaps they never learned another way. Perhaps they’ve never considered the driver’s seat as an option. Or maybe they’re anxious about taking the wheel themselves for fear of crashing the vehicle—their life—into the nearest tree.

Driving License for Life will get you road-ready for a breathtaking, fulfilling life in the driver’s seat.

No matter how old you are as you read these lines, it’s always the right time to get behind the wheel of your life and set off—toward where you’ve always wanted to go. You don’t have to wait until you’re 18, and you’re never “too old” at 45 to learn to drive. I’m convinced: happiness is homemade. You are the maker of your own happiness.

Over the next seven phases, I’ll be at your side with this book and the Driving License for Life. Think of me as your driving instructor. Unlike real driving lessons, though, my job isn’t to tell you exactly what to do. It’s to support and guide you so you can recognize for yourself what’s right—and important—for you. I’ll help you develop an NLP—a New Life Perspective.

You can count on this: over the next 49 action days you’ll experience a profound shift. You’ll move from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat of your life and take full control of your destiny. You’ll assume 100 percent responsibility for your actions and feel ready to dream as big as you like—because you’ll have gained awareness of who you are and how you function. Does this sound like a long, exhausting journey? Don’t worry—you can (almost) relax. We’ll break the route to your destination into many small, manageable stages. Step by step—meter by meter, foot by foot—you’ll make steady progress.

In Phases 1–4, you’ll learn how to “drive” and how you function as a human being. In Phases 5 and 6, you’ll turn the ignition and take your first test drives. Phase 7 contains—figuratively speaking—super fuel: boosters that give you powerful mindset tools. After 49 action days, you’ll be at the wheel with self-confidence, clarity, and curiosity, your goals firmly in sight. You’ll be living in the NOW—and that is liberating, because you’ll gain both clarity and freedom.

This book will spark changes you may only be sensing right now, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to work with it actively. Your time is now. Driving License for Life will lift you to a higher level, and I’m here to support you and offer everything you need along the way. Treat this book as your opportunity. It will encourage and guide you—but the real change comes from within. Only from there can you be truly happy; I’ve learned that myself. What I realized in the process: It’s all about the feeling—about how you want to feel.

I’m thrilled to accompany you on this journey. Life is for living! I can’t imagine anything better than inspiring people like you through this book—and through my coaching, workshops, online courses, and talks. I’d love to help you discover that life is worth loving. I firmly believe that doing so creates a healthier, better world for all of us. And you, in turn, inspire me to continue this mission—because you’re holding this book in your hands. Thank you!

Yours,

Julia

P.S. I’d love to follow along on your journey. Email me at [email protected] with the subject line “DLFL – I have a question.” You can also connect using the hashtag #DLFL on my social channels (Instagram: julia_mindyou; Facebook: mindyou.today, LinkedIn: julia-mindyou). Post a photo of yourself reading, or share insights you’ve gained—so I can celebrate every step with you! And not just me. You and I are part of the wonderful MindYou community: people who choose a conscious, awake life, who are curious about themselves and the bigger picture—people who sit in the driver’s seat of their lives.

About me

I’ll show you how to move from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat of your life—and how to take the wheel for your own happiness. But who am I to say I know how?

As you probably already know, my name is Julia. I’m the mother of two wonderful grown-up children and, together with my husband, I love family life, the outdoors, and sports. I’m also a passionate happiness coach—or life coach, mindset trainer, or mind coach. In the end, these are just labels. What really matters is this: I firmly believe that we are what we believe we are. My mission is to empower as many people as possible to allow themselves to be truly happy and fulfilled.

I’m also a proud ambassador of the World Happiness Project, a role that brings me incredible joy. Together in this network, we’ve made it our mission to promote television series and video streaming worldwide that focus on happiness and well-being. I’m convinced there’s nothing more important in life than being happy. Working with such communities and organizations truly fills my heart.

I wasn’t always this way. As a child, I was quiet—listening more than speaking. Sporty and active, yes, but reserved in conversation. My first turning point came in my early twenties when I met my husband while studying sports economics in Bayreuth. That meeting challenged me and launched my journey of personal development—a double blessing. It helped me break away from old patterns and develop a new way of seeing the world at an early stage.

Even back in my twenties, I was already sitting in personal development seminars, questioning myself and my existence. Since then, I’ve never stepped off that path, and it has become central to my work. From my own experience, I feel deeply connected to the very topics I now teach. That was one of the reasons why, in 2012, I began a second career path, studying NLP and hypnosis—and I’ve been sharing that knowledge in my coaching sessions and courses ever since.

I also offers the Driving License for Life program as an online course for corporate teams. It can be easily integrated into employee learning and development to strengthen well-being, resilience, and motivation at work.

You’ll find all offerings and ways to work with me—along with the online course for the Driving License for Life—on my website: www.mindyou.today

Greetings from the gearbox, the gear is in!

Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman "

Introduction

I don’t know you personally, but I do know—from myself and from many people I’ve encountered throughout my life—that we are often desperate for external validation. We look to others for recognition, believing it will bring us happiness and fulfillment. We try to fill an inner void.

Thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not pretty enough,” “I’m not clever enough,” “I’m not fast enough,” “I don’t earn enough money,” “I haven’t bought a house yet,” “I’m not confident enough,” “I’m not popular enough,” “I don’t have enough followers on Instagram,” or simply “I’m not enough” chip away at our happiness and self-esteem. So we look outward for confirmation that we are “enough.”

The more we chase external recognition and affirmation, and then—eventually—receive it, the more we begin to build our entire identity on it. But even the most famous, wealthy, and intelligent people can end up feeling depressed, burnt out, and empty. Why? Because they eventually realize they are not in the driver’s seat of their lives. They are in the passenger seat, letting others decide where the journey takes them.

I want to change that with you through Driving License for Life! Over the next 49 action days, you will move from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat in seven phases.

This course is divided into two parts. The first part covers Phases 1–4, where you will learn how to drive. As you can see, I love this analogy of driving a car—it helps us grasp what the journey is really about. In this first part, you’ll learn how your body works, how to manage it, and how to truly take things into your own hands. You’ll learn how to sit behind the wheel and take action. By the end of Phase 4—after 28 days—you will actually be in the driver’s seat, provided you’ve done the exercises, actively engaged with the material, and experimented with it playfully.

The second part includes Phases 5–7, where you’ll put your theoretical driving skills into practice. With the knowledge you’ve gained, you’ll begin your test drives. You’ll take the wheel yourself, bring what you’ve learned out into the real world, and apply it. By the end of Phase 7—after 49 action days—you will be the driver: full of self-confidence, clarity, and zest for life.

Even if you still doubt it right now, I know it will work. You’ll face obstacles, challenges, and decisions with conscious presence and greater confidence. And above all—you’ll be the one who determines the direction of travel.

Set your intentions

What happens if we don’t enter our destination into the sat nav before starting a trip? Exactly: we end up somewhere, but probably not where we truly wanted to go. That’s why it is so important to set ourselves goals.

The same applies to your Driving License for Life. It’s worth taking the time at the beginning to think carefully about what you want to have achieved by the end of our journey together. Intentions create clarity and help you keep your eyes fixed on the goal, even when tempting distractions appear to the left and right of the road.

So let’s begin with your goals. What do you want to gain from these 49 days? Who do you want to become during our time together? What are you already looking forward to? Take a blank journal, a notebook, or even just a few sheets of paper and write down your answers to these questions. Of course, you can also record them on your smartphone or laptop—whatever feels most natural to you.

Inventory

I have prepared ten questions for you so that you know exactly where you are starting your journey to the new you. When you know your starting point, you have a valuable reference for the road ahead. It makes progress visible and growth unmistakable.

The best way is to complete the questionnaire quickly and easily. Your first spontaneous impulse when choosing a number is usually the right one. If the topics in this inventory still feel abstract or too big, simply answer them intuitively. There is no right or wrong. And I promise you: when you answer these questions again at the end of the book, you will be amazed at how far you’ve come, how your answers have changed, and how much more clearly you understand yourself. Look forward to that moment!

Choose a number between 1 and 7 on the scale.

1 means: No, oh wow, I really don’t know anything about this topic! I feel there is so much to learn here.

7 means: Oh yes, I know this very well and could even teach it to others!

Please remember: this questionnaire is exclusively for you. You are not taking an exam, and you will not receive a grade or certificate at the end. Its only purpose is to increase your awareness of the topics that will accompany you through the seven phases ahead. At the end of the 49 action days, your answers will clearly show you how far you’ve come!

How to get the most out of this book

You may already have realized from the previous pages: I care deeply about your growth. That’s why I want you to get the very most out of this book. After all, you’ve committed to investing 49 days in yourself and in your dream life. To make sure you achieve what you set out to do, the Driving License for Life guides you through three stages:

1.Information: You receive knowledge and insights. Be sure to take notes—writing things down will help anchor them in your memory.

2.Integration: Don’t stop at taking notes! Integrate what you learn into your life, combine it with what you already know, and connect it to your daily reality. This is the most effective way to make the information stick. These 49 action days are all about being the person you want to be—almost self-evident once you start.

3.Exercise: Dedicate 10 to 20 minutes each day to work with this book and its learning impulses. Actively practice taking the driver’s seat, acting with curiosity, confidence, and clarity.

Your Way Is the Right Way

If you’re curious but not ready to commit to the full 49 days, you’re still in the right place. This book is designed to meet you where you are. Skim, scan, and follow your interest—dip into a chapter, test a single exercise, or go deep on the topics that call you. Whether you’re a seasoned personal-growth driver or just taking a test drive, you have full permission to use this book in your very own way. Trust your pace. The only rule is: keep moving—even if it’s one mindful page at a time.

How the book is structured

Every action day, you will receive input on a specific topic along with a practical activity. The tasks vary—some are short and simple, others take a little more time. That’s why it’s important to set aside enough space each day to read the lesson, reflect on it, and complete the exercises that follow. Each lesson builds on the one before it, so it’s best to follow them in order. As the days progress, the tasks will gradually become more complex—simply because you will already have learned so much. And don’t worry: more complex does not mean more complicated!

The Top 3 Hurdles

Every Master was once a beginner. So don’t be surprised if you encounter challenges during the next 49 action days. That’s not a bad thing. On the contrary—I would even say it’s completely normal. You are about to take your life into your own hands and make fundamental changes, and that can feel a little jarring or bumpy at times. I’m here to help you navigate those hurdles. From my years of experience, I know there are three main obstacles that most Driving License for Life participants face. That’s why I want to address them right now—so you can continue your journey with as few roadblocks as possible.

1. Lack of time

Make a plan for when you will set aside 10 to 20 minutes each day for learning and completing your daily actions. I am convinced that if you plan it, it will happen. If it isn’t planned, it most likely won’t. Our lives are often so full and hectic that it’s easy to get distracted. When I want to integrate something new into my own life, I find it works best if I do it first thing in the morning. After that, the day simply unfolds with all its uncertainties, and it becomes harder and harder to stick with it. Keep in mind that some days you’ll need more time than others—and that’s completely fine. Also remember the 72-hour rule: if we decide to change something in our lives, we should take the first step within 72 hours. Do that, and there’s a 90 percent chance of success. Wait longer, and the chances drop rapidly—this has been scientifically proven!

2. Low motivation

The second hurdle is that there will most likely be a few days in the next 49 days of training where you don't stick with it. Maybe you're not fit. Maybe something comes up. Maybe you're unmotivated. That's okay. We've all been there. On those days, remind yourself why you started this book in the first place and apply what you've learnt IMMEDIATELY. When in doubt, remind yourself that you're reading it for your own growth and keep checking your intentions. If there is a day when you have little motivation, use the next one and pick up where you left off.

3. Resistance

Resistance is normal—and to be expected. It often arrives with thoughts like, “Oh, that’s not my thing,” “I’ve seen all this before,” or “I feel overwhelmed.” We invent all kinds of reasons to avoid change and to stay within familiar—supposedly safe—boundaries. Be ready for these moments. Stretch beyond your limits and roll up your sleeves—now it counts. With this book and its practices, you’re stepping out of “business as usual.” You want to get to know yourself from the inside out, so some resistance is completely normal. Acknowledge it as common and absolutely okay—then return to your intentions and remember why you chose to complete this book. Set clear intentions and keep your focus.

Picture who you want to be when you turn the last page. What are you already looking forward to? And if you get stuck, send an email to [email protected] with the subject line “DLFL – I’m stuck in a traffic jam.” I’m here for you and will help you move past the hurdles.

What happens if you miss a day?

I completely understand that life “happens” and you may miss a day or two along the way. Don’t let that stop you—just pick up where you left off. This journey isn’t about reaching your goal in the shortest time possible. What matters is that you progress at your own pace. Work with the valuable content I’ve prepared for you in a way that allows it to unfold its full magic and effectiveness. This is especially true if it takes more than one day to absorb and truly understand a lesson. That’s why I always speak of “action days.” It doesn’t matter which day of the week they fall on or how often you choose to give yourself an action day—what matters most is that you keep going.

You can, of course, complete the 49 action days in a row. If you choose that path, I have planned two special action days for you at the end of each of the seven phases. These catch-up days give you time to revisit any missed chapters and to deepen your integration of what you’ve learned. Make good use of them.

And now—let’s get started. The ride of your life is waiting for you!

It’s not the happy who are grateful. It’s the grateful who are happy.

Francis Bacon

Phase 1:Your Human Perception

Action Day 1:Observations

Our journey together is finally beginning! I’m excited for you to start the engine and head toward your destination. No matter where you’re sitting right now—whether in the passenger seat or the driver’s seat—your sat nav is already programmed. Stay curious and eager to discover what awaits you over the next 49 action days and seven phases. I’m pretty sure you’ve never experienced anything quite like this before.

The Driving License for Life is designed so that each action day brings you something new. Fresh impulses, insights, and progress are waiting for you—and together they’ll cover a lot of ground. The focus of Phase 1 is your perception. Over the coming days, we’ll dive deeply into your life: your attitude toward it, your gratitude, your focus, your filters, and your human needs.

Today we begin with observation. Let’s get started!

You have picked up this book and joined the Driving License for Life for many different reasons. I’m going to assume that, at least in some areas of your life, you sometimes feel more like a passenger. What do I mean by that? At times it can seem as though external forces are steering your life. Instead of sitting at the wheel yourself, you’re just along for the ride. That’s fine for a while, but the downside is clear: as a passenger, you can’t decide on the direction. By choosing this book, you’ve already decided to change that. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading these words. And I celebrate you for that!

So let’s think together about why you may find yourself in the passenger seat and make self-awareness our focus today. We’ll explore what’s going on inside you and take on the really big questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose? What makes me happy? Answering these will move you a big step forward.

Let’s start with an encouraging thought: what if you are not here by chance, but for a very specific reason? Of all the thousands of years before us and after us, you were born into this world at this exact moment, in this unique place, living a life story that will never be repeated in the same way—neither in the past nor in the future. You look the way you look. You carry a bundle of unique qualities and gifts.
