Mia opened her eyes with difficulty. It must be late or very early, because her room was in darkness and she was plagued by a vengeful headache that had been lying in wait for her since the first glass of champagne. To make matters worse, that glass had obviously been followed by another glass and more were to follow. This explained why she felt like a wreck just fit for a visit to the rubbish disposal. On the other hand, she didn't understand why she was so confused and worried. Something was not right here.
She quickly knew what was going on when her right hand reached for her bedside lamp but couldn't find it. Obviously she was not at home. Panic threw her out of bed.
"What the hell is going on?"
Eyes wide, she scanned the darkness to get a rough idea of where she was. She wasn't in her one-night stand's house, or she would have remembered. Obviously the room she was in was dark and without any light sources.
So where was she supposed to be? Maybe she was in a hospital room after an accident or in the drunk tank of a police station. Or maybe she was just dreaming or trying to wake up from a coma.
Or maybe she had been kidnapped. This suspicion triggered a wave of terrible panic in her and sordid images from the news appeared before her eyes. Women tortured, killed and abandoned indiscriminately. Bodies left to the eyes of onlookers. She remembered the case of the black dahlia. The poor unknown woman who was found dismembered…. A wave of terrible panic clouded her senses and she had to sit down to keep from falling over.
With her head between her arms, she sat there for a long time, breathing deeply to give the panic time to calm down. Then, when she had calmed down to some extent, she tried to reconstruct the events of the evening.
As usual, it was her best friend Johanna who insisted that they go out as friends. Going out was anything but a word compared to the apocalyptic party she had dragged them to. Music whose volume could have woken an entire graveyard, enough lights to put up a thousand Christmas trees, enough alcohol to drown even the strictest teetotaller, and people (most of them drunk) jumping around screaming. Mia had seen some of them running around naked. The golden youth of the City of Angels wanted to enjoy life to the fullest and were not above showing it. The fact that this "ball" was masked unleashed lust.
When Mia saw the many people who had gathered, she wanted to turn back, but Johanna grabbed her by the shoulders and reminded her to have fun. To please her best friend, whose caring sometimes drove her to despair, she went to the bar, ignoring her disapproving look. If fun is a chore, then she deserved a little outside help.
A man whose face was obscured by a wolf mask helpfully handed her a cup. He was rather tall and radiated an indefinable, attractive, feline grace. They had exchanged a knowing glance and she had seen an indefinable glow in his large black eyes.
He gave her an enchanting smile that she could only return.
Normally she was suspicious. Photos of her taken by malicious paparazzi circulated regularly in magazines. People knew who she was and most had already formed an image of her without ever having met her. Some thought she was moody, some thought she was frivolous and some thought she was stupid. Others found all three at once. So being the daughter of a millionaire didn't have only advantages. And if they only knew…
People only saw the tip of the iceberg she lived with every day. A whole host of friends circled around her to benefit from her aura and to witness her every misstep. Only Johanna was an exception to the rule. Her friend from her youth was always there. That's why Mia was always cautious when people approached her, hiding her vulnerability behind an apparent coldness.
