Fair Haven: The prequel

Chapter 1: The three masters

Our story began on earth. A young lady, just 18 years old, was strolling through the city. Alone.

She had been watched for a long time. In a nearby branch, the observers talked about the unhappy and sad lonely girl.

When she finally made her way to a secluded street, they struck.

One of them crept up on her unnoticed and made a sign behind her back. She felt like she was being followed and turned around, but her pursuer had already disappeared.

After her stroll, she sat down on a bench in a small park. There was a fountain right in front of her. She usually sat very close to the fountain as she liked to watch the water.

In the late afternoon, she made her way to the bus stop. She was running late. A man dressed in black and wearing a mask suddenly appeared in front of her and blocked her way.

He pulled a small but very sharp knife out of his jacket and threatened her with it. The man didn't say a word, ran towards her and stabbed her. She fell to the ground badly injured. As she fell unconscious, the two other attackers from the group also approached her.

It became stormy and it started to rain. The leaves on the trees rustled. A wild storm unleashed itself.

The apparent leader of the group looked down at her and simply said, "A fitting weather."

Late in the evening, some people found her between some trees. She was severely hypothermic and had already lost a large amount of blood.

She was immediately taken to the nearest hospital. Things were not going well for her.

Doctors fought for hours to save her. The chances were not good.

The young lady received no visitors while she was dying. No friends, relatives or even parents came to visit her.

On the night of her death, three figures appeared at her bedside. They were the three masters from an old legend. God-like beings.

Mikun pulled a syringe from under his coat. He added the liquid in the syringe to the drip.

Mikun said pleasantly, "That's about it."

Makun added: "I have to say. Not a bad time." Mikun thanked Makun for the compliment: "Thank you very much, sir."

Makun, who seemed to be their leader, withdrew his entourage: "Let's leave her alone now, she has a lot planned for tomorrow."

The three of them disappeared out of the room window.

Early in the morning, Ava woke up with a start. She didn't know why she was here or what had happened.

She slowly got out of bed. She felt fit and wondered why she had woken up in a hospital bed. She went to the washbasin and washed her face with cool water. Then she looked in the mirror above the basin. She screamed for a few seconds.

Then she jumped out of the window in fear of her reflection and ran along the empty streets. There was not a soul in sight.

"Is this a dream? Or have I gone mad?" she asked herself.

She saw someone standing further ahead on the street. It was a young man dressed in white, looking at her with his dark black eyes.

Fearfully, she took a few steps back. He looked at her maliciously and scowled.

She suddenly felt dizzy when she looked into his eyes and had to kneel down. The stranger pulled out a katana and stood opposite her.

He was about to strike out with his blade when another young man jumped out of the shadows and kicked the blade out of his hand.

"You!" shouted the sinister stranger.

Ava watched as the two fought each other.

During the fight, the villain's eyes began to glow brightly, creating a huge black maelstrom into which everyone was drawn.

She woke up after the hard fall next to one of the strangers and quickly jumped a little further away from him.

There was no trace of the attacker.

The other stranger woke up, looked over at her and tried to make contact with her: "Are you all right?" She replied hesitantly: "I think so. I'm not quite sure, who are you?" The stranger replied kindly: "I'm Ni-Chan. I was after that guy, the one with the red eyes. But he seems to have given me the slip again."

Ava seemed visibly confused: "Where am I?" "Well, in Paraside. Where else?" She wasn't familiar with Paraside. "Uh, where?" "Yeah, got something on your marble, didn't you?"

"I think you might be right about that," she agreed with him.

"Come with me. I'll show you everything you want to know. You'll get the hang of it. What's your name anyway?" "My name is Ava, I think."

"Well then, Ava. Nice to meet you. I can certainly escort you to the capital if you like."

She had lost almost all her memories and so her new friend Ni-Chan explained everything she wanted and needed to know. She couldn't explain this new world. One thing was clear to her: she was no longer on Earth.

He trained her over the next two years to become a great huntress and was proud of her.

Chapter 2: Ava

From Ava's diary: page 2 - 152:

I can feel a storm brewing.

Back then, I was still a hunter and was chasing a criminal who had escaped from the prison in our capital.

I had been given the task of catching him again. A trail led me to the green pond.

I had a feeling that he was hiding around here somewhere. I followed his tracks. There were huge swathes of mist in the forest, but I recognized an old house from a distance, into which the tracks led.

I moved silently so as not to give myself away and made my way to the house. I pulled the doors open with a swing. The gust of wind caused by the doors whirled up leaves on the floor. I followed the leaves with my eyes and my gaze met with Sysuke, the escaped prisoner, who was standing right opposite me in the shadows.

"Welcome to my little residence. You must be the slayer to stop me. Well, there's no way I'm going to let that happen," said my opponent.

I clenched my fists: "We'll see." I didn't like the way he was talking to me.

Sysuke attacked. With a mighty high jump, he leapt almost to the ceiling. During the jump, he released a fire-like projectile using magic. I skillfully dodged this surprisingly tiny fireball.

"You aim like a little girl," I said to him after dodging his attack. I seemed a little arrogant at the time.

I jerked my foot into the air, creating a shockwave of pure air. It quickly headed in his direction, but only grazed him.

He laughed and, like me, prepared for the next attack. We hit each other with our fists. There was a constant exchange of blows.

The fight seemed to go on for several minutes. But then I saw a chance to use a powerful technique.

Just before I could use it, a dark figure appeared behind me and a sword pierced my chest.

I remember screaming and falling to the ground.

From Logan's diary:

We received a new mission. A huntress had been missing for several months. We were told to go and look for her. She had last been seen at the green pond, so that was our first destination.

We started from Krakuna, our capital, and hiked through the forests of Krakanaan. After the forest, we took the direct route to the green pond and began our search there.

In the middle of a gloomy forest, we found a crumbling building. We entered it cautiously.

My two team members and I split up and investigated the house for clues about the Slayer.

During my search, I discovered a kind of laboratory behind a wooden door. There were some cracked test tubes there. No one seemed to have been here for a long time. A team member spoke through the headset. It was Jaden: "Hey, guys! I might have found something. I'm standing here in a large hall and I've found a purple circle of runes on the floor. But there are symbols here that I don't recognize. I need help."

I reported back: "Don't move, we're on our way." Jaden seemed to have found something else: "Just a moment, I've just found a dusty book on the floor. But I can't open it. You need a key for that."

Nahru, my second team member, spoke up: "I think I just saw a key lying around in one of the rooms. I'll bring it with me."

When we all arrived at Jaden's, we immediately tried out the key, which surprisingly fitted perfectly.

The book opened and we leafed through it. The book was about summoning and sealing rituals. As we read a few lines from it, the runes on the purple circle lit up. They opened up one by one and let out what was locked inside them.

I quickly realized that it must be the missing slayer.

It appeared in front of us with a flash of light. The sealing circle disappeared after it was opened.

Together we carried the unconscious huntress away from the house and returned to the safe forests of Krakanaan. Towards evening we stopped for a rest.

At the campfire, the huntress woke up and told us about her mission. She said that she had been stabbed by a stranger.

A bird came to her the night before she disappeared and gave her another mission. This is due to start exactly tomorrow with a group. She was lucky that we found her today.

So she set off the very next morning. We accompanied her to the border, then it was time to say goodbye again.

The huntress Ava thanked us: "Thank you very much for your help. We will definitely meet again."

We waved goodbye to her. Then we handed in our mission report.

From Ava's diary: page 153 - 179:

I was now traveling on the paths of the Valley of Fire. In this land, I was looking for a small village called "Klingenwacht".

When I got there, someone called my name shortly afterwards: "Hey, hello! You there!"

"Who, me?" I asked.

"Yes, you! Come over here and join us!"

I followed the person into the local pub. Three other people were waiting there. They were all here for the mission.

"So, now we're complete," the unknown group leader said to the group.

Ni-Chan was also here.

"Hey, Ava! Long time no see," he addressed me immediately.

Of course, I immediately replied back: "Hey, so we meet again. How many years must it have been now?"

"So, now open your ears and listen to me. As you can see, we're a team of five. We have a weapons specialist, that's me. Then we have a doctor, that's Kay, and three fighters. That would be you, Ava, Ray and Ni-Chan. By the way, my name is Wade. I'm the team leader here. If no one else has a question, we'll start right away."

Our target was Maghy, a mad scientist who had barricaded himself in his citadel. He refused to sign the peace treaty and should be removed from circulation immediately, preferably imprisoned. Why? We didn't ask ourselves that at the time.

As no one had any more questions, we immediately made our way to the foot of the citadel.

We broke down the front door and invited ourselves in.

We saw the first hurdle ahead of us, a hall full of training orcs, who looked at us in surprise and annoyance.

"Maybe we should have taken the back entrance, Wade," I accused him.

"Oh, I'll be fine," he said confidently.

Wade bravely stood in front of the angry bunch of orcs.

Before he could say anything to them, someone shouted at him from the background: "Stop! They're mine!"

A huge and muscular orc with a battle axe in his hand ran out of the crowd towards Wade. The other orcs made way for him and stood to the sides, presumably to cheer him on.

"Which of you will be the first to face me?" the orc warchief asked us.

He looked like a perfect opponent for me, so I wanted to fight him: "I'll take it from here."

Wade muttered in my direction, "Next one's mine."

"Wade. Don't worry about it."

The orc drew his axe behind him and looked me in the eye: "It will be my pleasure to kill you."

I saw it the same way: "The feeling is mutual."

He stormed towards me. I quickly dodged his first axe attack and he lost his balance.

I slipped between his legs, clawed at his back, drew my bow and shot an arrow into his bloody head. He dropped dead.

"Not a bad thing." Wade applauded. I handed him the axe: "Here. A souvenir."

He strapped it to his back and thanked me.

But we weren't out of the woods yet. We still had an orc army to fight. That turned out to be no real problem.

From the large hall outside, we walked down a long corridor. There seemed to be no end to it until we finally arrived at a thick stone door. We broke through it and entered a much smaller hall.

A huge creature made of ice suddenly jumped from the ceiling and landed on the floor in front of us.

"What do you think of that, Wade?" I asked him. He was momentarily speechless.

The monster threw shards of ice towards us. As these broke into smaller shards in the air, we couldn't always dodge them and were often hit.

The ice monster said to us: "How is the war chief?"

I answered his question: "Dead."

It appeared behind me: "You have a problem!"

Ice spikes formed underneath me.

"I WANTED TO KILL HIM!"

I jumped up to avoid them.

Before he could hit me with his ice fist, Ni-Chan knocked his whole arm off with a kick. The arm shattered into thousands of small ice splinters.

He straightened up again despite the hard blow.

Ray couldn't believe his eyes: "What, the guy's still going on?"

"Hey, do that again, will you?" I said to Ni-Chan.

"Sure, nothing is stopping me," he said very confidently.

I grinned and watched my teacher at work.

While he ran towards the ice monster, I attached some grenades to my arrows and waited for the right moment.

When Ni-Chan hit him perfectly again, I shot the arrows with the grenades. Ni-Chan saw the arrows shoot past him and ran away as fast as he could. It didn't see the arrows coming in time and they drilled into its skin of ice. They exploded and the monster was blown into many small pieces.

Ray and Wade smashed the rest of the ice just to be on the safe side.

We bandaged our wounds and moved on quickly. Maghy was waiting.

In the end, we stormed the last room that was left. The door had not been locked.

Inside, it looked like an alchemy laboratory. There were bubbling test tubes everywhere. He seemed to be conducting experiments here.

He was at a table at the far end of the lab. He seemed to have been waiting for us.

He held a test tube in his hand. He lifted it into the air.

Suddenly he disappeared from the scene and appeared a few seconds later right behind our group. He threw the glass towards us. It hit me.

"Next, please," the professor said as I went down.

He looked over at Ni-Chan and threw the next glass. It hit him too.

From Wade's logbook:

Two of our team members had already been incapacitated. Both had been hit by some kind of acid and it was slowly dissolving them. I remember the two of them holding hands.

The three of us now tried to take him on. After a long struggle, Kay's cover was broken.

Maghy drew a dagger and killed him from behind.

Ray screamed about his brother and burst into tears: "No!"

Maghy was pleased: "One less."

The brother stormed towards Maghy. Maghy parried his attacks with ease.

Then we saw a light.

From Ava's diary: page 180 - 200:

In the world of the dead, Ni-Chan and I decided not to give up. We didn't have much time to think about it, so we merged our thoughts. We returned to the world of the living as one person. Even if only for a short time.

Bright colors transported me back to the scene.

I saw my team, Wade and Ray. I saw Kay lying deceased next to Maghy.

Wade was surprised: "You ... it's you, isn't it? You did it. One of the arts of the soul."

"Was there anything else left for us?"

"Good that you're back. We have a big problem here."

"I'll take it from here."

"G ... good." Wade stepped aside.

Maghy had seen us: "Who are you, HÄ?"

We ran towards him and dragged the ground with us. He couldn't follow us. We were too fast for his eyes.

We threw him to the ground with our hands and jumped into the air. Then we brought our leg down on his head. You could hear his bones cracking in his skull.

We quickly took Kay into our arms.

"Come on, we have to go!" we shouted to our remaining team members.

The citadel collapsed over our heads. We all ran quickly to the exit. It wasn't over yet, because Maghy now showed himself in his true form. He turned into a huge monster with a gleve and tail. He had huge horns on his head and was bigger than the collapsed citadel. He stood in its ruins and searched furiously for us.

While Ray took his brother to the blade guard, Wade, Ni-Chan and I (still fused) took care of the monster. We got on Wade's motorcycle and took off. He threw debris at us and tried to catch us with his Gleve. Wade had us jump off behind a small rock. We grabbed my bow and strung it with an arrow, to which we attached a rope. The end of the rope was already attached to Wade's motorcycle.

When we had a clear shot, we shot the arrow at Maghy. We hit his neck exactly. Then Wade drove off.

He drove around him in a circle, wrapping the steel cable further around his throat.

A few laps were enough to make him choke on the rope. He kept reaching for the rope. He couldn't break free and so we successfully defeated Maghy.

Wade picked us up at the rock and we drove back to Klingenwacht.

Once there, the soul art separated us again. Ni-Chan and I were once again two separate people.

We buried our good friend Kay, whom I barely got to know, and then went our separate ways.

I handed in my report in Krakuna.

After a break of a few weeks, I was given a new mission: to find Akaya's base in Dennwehr.

It was a group mission. Nahru was to accompany me. I already knew him from my rescue.

I took the underground train system to Dennwehr.

The meeting point was at the crossroads to the monastery. But Nahru was a long time coming ...

He only arrived at the agreed meeting point an hour late, grinning.

Nahru was full of energy and greeted me: "Hey! Here already? Let's go then!"

I remained silent at him.

"Is what?" He didn't understand.

"Oh you know, Nahru. It's nothing."

We traveled to the monastery and searched the outer wall for secret entrances. This time I wanted to avoid the front entrance.

There was a narrow side entrance on the western wall. We crept through and entered his hiding place. We followed a corridor.

Some time later, we arrived at his laboratory. We searched it for possible documents and records.

Nahru discovered a container with a strangely luminous volatility. I took it and put it in my rucksack.

When Akaya saw that we had taken the container, he appeared from his hiding place in the room and stood opposite us: "The container. Give it to me."

I replied defiantly: "I don't see your name on it." "Go and get it if you dare," Nahru added.

"... that was really very helpful, Nahru," I added.

Akaya drew his sword and we fought each other.

I fought him with my bow. He was made of hard material and could withstand his sword.

While we were fighting, I saw Sysuke appear behind Nahru.

"Behind you!" I shouted to my partner.

Nahru barely managed to dodge him.

"Phew." I turned my attention back to Akaya.

During the fight, the container glowed more and more strongly from my rucksack.

Nahru faced Sysuke and fought him passably.

I caught Akaya on the arm with my bow. As I was about to continue my attack, the container fell out of the backpack and shattered on the ground. Everything lit up and it seemed as if a creature had been released from it.

Nahru and Sysuke were fighting on the top floor. After the freed creature discovered Sysuke, it threw him out of one of the windows. Nahru and I were spared the creature's wrath. It thanked us briefly with a nod and disappeared, vanishing into thin air.

Akaya threw a smoke bomb and disappeared. Nahru came down to me in the courtyard.

We saw Sysuke's body lying on a stone floor.

"We should go. Maybe we'll catch him next time." Nahru agreed to my request.

We buried Sysuke's body in the monastery garden and took the train back to Krakuna.

There I was immediately given a special assignment at the mission office.

Of course I accepted the assignment. It was a diplomatic mission involving peace negotiations again. I was to deliver a message from the High Council.

My destination was a small settlement at the end of a forest, the cursed forest. This was in Liedersang.

Every day was dark in this forest. You always crossed it during the day. At night it was too dangerous because of the poachers and rabid animals that were said to roam there.

I had already been walking through the forest for two days.

Suddenly I stopped. I had the feeling that someone was following me.

Then I heard a hissing sound. I recognized it. Arrows! I barely managed to dodge the incoming fast arrows. I hurried along the path. More and more arrows whizzed towards me. I took cover behind a tree and strung a few arrows on my bow myself. I shot back.

When I had fired several shots into the treetops, the shooter seemed to have fled.

As I slowly tried to move on, I was surprised by a few people. They were pointing spears at me and had stones in their hands. One person came out of the crowd and spoke to me: "What are you doing in our woods? You are angering the spirit of the forest!"

I tried to explain myself: "I'm actually just passing through. I just want to deliver a message. I'm on a peaceful mission."

"That was the great devil of the forest who shot at you."

The people lowered their weapons.

"You were lucky. Come with me to our village. It's not far from here. It's already late in the afternoon, too dangerous to walk any further through the forest now."

I hesitated for the time being. It wasn't in my nature to trust strangers in the forest. But the lady who spoke to me seemed trustworthy.

I accepted the offer and followed the people into a small settlement.
