This short story is a work of fiction. Names and characters are the product of the author’s imagination and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead is entirely coincidental.

***

From all vipers the hell’s viper has the largest and at the same the most northern habitat in Europe.

Its venom is two to three times more toxic than the one of the Diamond Rattlesnake; however, due to its low toxicity it is only life threatening for children and elderly people. The neurotoxin injected during a bite may cause shortness of breath and cardiac arrest and in rare cases, loosening may occur.

The hell’s viper is listed on the Red List as endangered species.

Hell's Viper

The sunrays dipped the water in a green-golden shimmer so that the rocky ground beneath the surface looked like glittering nuggets. A cricket quietly chirped in the green reed, desperately waiting for an answer. A bluish dragonfly occasionally passed by.

The sky was cloudless so that the sun burned on his skin, while his little boat glided over the shallow water.

Jon Carter could not imagine any other place such beautiful; even his normally workaholic mind was able to find the needed rest. No question, the last heavenly paradise on earth – at least in his opinion. Perhaps that was the reason why he decided to come here as often as possible.

Some of his friends and colleagues found their relaxation in the night clubs, sometimes they still try to urge him to accompany them but he constantly refused. This was the only place he needed to calm down his mind. Right here, lying in his small boat, he could give his body and soul enough rest to survive the daily battles in the office.

There was a time, when he was younger, where he tried the nightlife as well, however, the dancing in combination with alcohol and those flashing colorful beams only made him feel dizzy so that he was more stressed and tired the next morning. Neither the dizziness nor the hangover was something Carter wanted to experience again – for nothing in the world!

So he started to leave this life behind and wandered through the surroundings of Tarker’s Lake until he found this small retention basin, hidden within the Haunted Forest, the natural wall between the nearby metropolis and the small town itself.
