Preston Child asserts the moral right to be identified as the author of this short story.

Since his mother’s fatal accident, Julian Wolters’ life has been getting out of control. And when he thought it could not come worse, a misshapen creature appears that seems to be connected to him and his greater family.

Can Julian get his life back on tracks and escape the spawn of hell?

This story is a work of fiction. Names and characters are the product of the author’s imagination and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead is entirely coincidental.

Even before the thunderstorm reached Millersburg, Julian Wolters walked over to the open window. A fine drizzle sprayed in his face while he slowly let his eyes glide over the deserted garden and the fields behind. If he leaned out a little further, as he did sometimes, he could see the small corner where he and his mates recently sat, drank beer, smoked pot and enjoyed their time until his father returned home.

For a long time he had not experienced such a harmonious autumn afternoon, especially since his mother died in a fatal car accident few months ago.

Trembling, Julian closed the window, took a last look outside, closed the curtains and went to bed. Far away and of no concern for him, he heard the thunderclaps irregularly crashing in the autumn wind that blew through the empty streets of his hometown. The mumbling of the weather provided an easy goose flesh on his naked body before he fell asleep.

For a few seconds time stands still.

A major thunderstorm is blowing between the old tombstones of the long forgotten cemetery; it pulls on the skeleton trees, takes its last leaves and throws it away after a few yards.

The full moon sneers spiteful behind grey clouds and dips the lonesome area in a ghastly ocean of shades.

The creature crouches behind the weathered tombstone of a killed miner. Its disfigured face looks up to the dark sky while it listens to the hollow voices of the dead. A moment later it repeats: “The revenge is mine; I will recompense declares the Lord.”

It feels the icy wetness on his moldering body and knows…

… the moment of vengeance has come!
