Introduction

HUMAN beings have been given the knowledge of healing powers from herbs since ancient times. Despite herbs have always been considered the medicines that nature provides us, ironically the modern world has labeled them as mere “alternative medicines” while putting its efforts fully on artificially produced drugs.

The real charm of using the medicinal properties of herbs in our day to day lives lies in the fact that they not only help us curing various diseases, but also enable us to prevent the outbreak of various health disorders by cleansing our internal organs from all sorts of harmful chemical substances. This process is known as herbal detoxification or simply herbal detox.

Detoxifying our body with herbs: we all have heard about it from our grand-parents, or people from the older generations. In facr, this technique has been a widely used practice from ancient times and, while it has seen a diminishing popularity in the latter half of the 20th century, in the past few years, it seems like its lost charm is reviving again.

In its simplest form, a herbal detoxification (or detox) can be defined as the natural way to stimulate the organs of our body responsible for detoxification. Even if the human body has been designed specifically to excrete all toxic elements on a daily basis, the amount of toxic elements that we may be exposed in this era has increased abnormally given an irregular lifestyle along with an increasingly polluting atmosphere. This increase in toxins exposure haa made the natural detox mechanism of our body overloaded by too many toxic substances to take care of, eventually resulting in various health conditions including degenerative ailments and chronic symptoms.

Most of us are already familiar with terms such as detox-diet, that is to say, a diet that is able to help our bodies to get rid of toxic elements in a natural way. A proper diet is an integral part of any proper and fully fledged herbal detox process. Nevertheless, assuming that any similarities exist between a general and a detoxification diet would be completely wrong. A general diet is aimed at losing weight and/or gaining the desired body structure in a relatively shorter span of time. Hardly this type of diet does any good when it comes to fighting toxic elements. A detoxifying diet, on the other hand, is more about developing the habit of consuming what nature provides us based on our individual health needs and conditions.

As there are various types of detox programs (e.g. aqua detox, electromagnetic, electrical detox), the focus of this book will be nevertheless totally confined to herbal detox only.

There are a wide range of plants in nature that yield the best solutions for curing specific diseases and health conditions without any sort of major side effects. Based on the herbs used, the practice of herbal detox can be segmented into several distinct categories, including:

• Organ detox, aimed at cleansing and rebuilding different toxin infected organs

• Heavy metal detox, aimed at removing from the body toxic heavy metal elements (such as mercury)

• Fat detox, aimed at eliminating excessive accumulated fat in the body

• Alcohol detox, aimed at neutralizing or limiting the damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption

Of course other detox categories also exist (such as parasites and drug detox) but, once again, they will not be the primary focus of this book.

The underlying concept behind the science of herbal detoxification is fairly vast, and one must try to comprehend it in a step by step manner before being able to benefit from it. In general, the first step towards any herbal detox program begins with the awareness about what toxins really are, and how they affect our body. This will be the topic of Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 we will then formulate a strategy to implement our herbal detox plan. The chapter will guide us in discovering what we are really looking forward to get from the detox plan. In fact, while some people prefer to have a full body detox program to enhance their overall health, others may solely start instead with partial or organ specific herbal detox plan.

Once we are sure about what we are looking for in our herbal detox plan, Chapter 3 will teach us then about the herbs we will most likely use in the program along with their various benefits.

When following a herbal detox program, it is always useful to learn about the basic mechanisms of our various internal organs such as liver, kidneys, digestive tract and lungs so that to better understand how we could optimize their performance with the use of herbs. These will be the topics covered in Chapter 4.

A well defined detox plan then heavily relies upon our food habits as ingestion is one of the many ways by which toxins enter our body. That is the reason Chapter 5 will present recipes for specific dishes based on herbs. Finally, Chapter 6 will present a quick guide on how to kick start a 4-week herbal detox program, addressing how to cultivate some of the most common herbs and spices. As consulting a herbal medicine expert is a great way to learn more about the array of herbs at our disposal today, this chapter would like to offer only some interesting ideas about the essential herbs we should purchase in the nearest herbal store or those we should always have in our own kitchen garden.

The book is completed with two appendixes. In the first a list of the most known toxins is given, while in the second specific herbs are listed depending upon the area of the body we are expecting to help during our the detoxification.
