Teaser:

But her happy thoughts were somewhat interrupted when she saw a teenaged boy walk out of the elevator, carrying an armful of newspapers. He was right in front of her, and he tossed one paper to the door of the apartment across from her, then started to walk away.
"Hold on," she called, waving one arm while balancing her clothes basket on her hip. "I want to talk with you. Have you got a minute?"
"Sure, lady, what do you want?"
"I want to subscribe to your paper. I just moved in yesterday. Number 602. Can you sign me up?"

CHAPTER ONE

"Now, now," said the mustached young man, his blonde hair reaching to his shoulders. "Be brave, Holly. I know this is a trying experience for you. It is for all of us who loved Bob. But you'll just have to pick up the pieces and carry on, that's all. You're still young... and beautiful. You've got your whole life ahead of you." The man placed his hand on the widow's knee to give it a gentle squeeze.

"I know you're right," said the widow, lifting. her head and forcing a smile. "It's just that it was all so sudden. One day I was a married woman, the next day I was a widow. Poor Bob."

She patted her tightly wrapped black hair to make sure every strand was in place. After tugging on her long, black dress, she leaned back in the seat and looked ahead at the stream of cars in front of them. But her eyes were still misty.

"I can't stand to see you like this, Holly. You were always such a cheerful woman. To be honest, I was always jealous of Bob because I wanted you for myself. And now that he's gone, I can't help but want to make you happy. Can you understand that?"

"Of course I can, Joe. And I'm really flattered. But this isn't the time or place to be saying things like that. Poor Bob isn't even in the ground yet."
