Chapter 1
Introduction
Quite simply, the iPad Pro 2024 is among the best tablets I have ever tested. My all-time favorite premium tablet used to be the iPad Pro M2, its predecessor. All I enjoy about iPad Pro, nevertheless, is improved and updated in the most recent model. This is the premium tablet to beat right now.
What then distinguishes the new iPad Pro so highly. The Ultra Retina XDR display is, to start with, the best OLED panel I have ever seen. Sharp 2,360 x 1,640 resolution is matched flawlessly with deep blacks and eye-scorching whites produced by the 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Video games, comics, and everything else looks amazing.
The iPad Pro thus features the robust yet thin aluminum frame that resembles the iPad Air. Ironically, you have to wonder which iPad Pro models—11 and 13 inches—are really "Air" slates because they are both lighter and thinner than the new iPad Air 2024 tablets. Not to mention more pleasant to carry for extended periods of time, the iPad Pro is now more portable than ever thanks to its thinner and lighter design.
Apple surprised us with an M4-powered iPad Pro rather than an M3 model. Testing shows that this powerful processor outperforms its forebears. The M4 chip makes it easy to run graphically demanding games like Resident Evil 4 or editing software like Premiere Pro.
Thinner than Air
Not much has changed visually from the previous tablet. It is a thin profile, big display piece of solid aluminum. Holding the tablet, though, makes it clear that this is a brand-new gadget.
The latest iPad Air tablets and the 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models are lighter and thinner than their forerunners. The changes in weight and size may not seem like much on paper, but in practice they matter a great deal. For example, the large 12.9-inch iPad Pro is so uncomfortable to grip that I have to continually move my hands when reading comics on it. The new tablet is easier to hold for longer periods of time, hence that is no longer the case.
Though it looks similar to the previous iPad Pro, the newer version is actually lighter and thinner, making prolonged use of it simpler. Image credited to Tom's Guide.
Talking about shifting positions, the front camera on the tablet is now landscape rather than portrait. Since most people hold tablets in this way, Apple's decision to shift the front camera—as it did with the iPad 2022—is welcome. Take selfies, use FaceID to unlock the iPad Pro, and engage in video conversations all feel more natural as a result. This repositioned front camera appeals to me.
The new iPad Pro includes a single USB-C port, same like the outgoing one. Though unfortunate, that doesn't mean the end of the world.
Amazing OLED display
An OLED iPad Pro has long been desired by many, and now it is at last available. While the new design is appealing, some may find this tablet's Ultra Retina XDR display—as Apple refers to it—to be its primary attraction. The screen looks brilliant and vibrant to me. Incredible contrast between dark and light components creates stunning images and videos. It is truly rather remarkable.
The iPad Pro looked amazing on a YouTube movie I saw called "LG Jazz HDR UHD." Perfect contrast to the vivid hues were provided by the pristine black components. Everything moved silky smooth thanks to the 120Hz refresh rate as well.
Digital comic book fans will love using the iPad Pro. Conan the Barbarian #9 and Savage Sword of Conan #2, two color comics, both look amazing. While the deep black inks in the later allow me to clearly distinguish individual lines, the rich colors and dark shadows in the former give the story a more alive feel.
Turning now to our display test, the brightness, color accuracy, and reproduction of color are all essentially unchanged from the outgoing model. All things look far richer, though, thanks to the OLED display, especially the colors. OLED display technology improves picture quality overall, even if color values on the iPad Pro 2024 are similar to those on the previous model.
Though I work as a professional writer, I find it difficult to express how beautiful the OLED display of the iPad Pro looks. The OLED display on this tablet is maybe the greatest I've ever seen. Seeing is believing.
Incredible performance
An upgraded Neural Engine (known as an NPU by the rest of the industry) together with a 10-core CPU and GPU are all part of the M4 processor found in our 13-inch iPad Pro evaluation sample. Though it lacks nano-texture glass, our tablet boasts 1TB of storage. Throw on Wi-Fi + Cellular, and the configured cost of this review device comes to $2,099. Like the M3 chip, which also makes use of 3nm technology, the M4 processor offers hardware-accelerated mesh shading, ray tracing, and dynamic caching—all of which are firsts for the iPad platform.
When I used the iPad Pro as a laptop, it handled my usual workflow—which typically involves juggling many open tabs and programs. Even with a YouTube video thrown in, the iPad Pro never slowed. Digital comics handled flawlessly by the tablet as well.
Our benchmark testing showed the iPad Pro to perform admirably as well. In the Geekbench 6 test of overall CPU performance, the iPad Pro with an M4 processor outperformed its M2 cousin by almost twice.
We swapped versions a little while back, so we're comparing Geekbench 6 results for the iPad Pro 2024 to prior Geekbench 5 scores for the 2022 model. The significant disparity between Geekbench 5 and Geekbench 6 scores above tells you all you need to know, yet Geekbench 5 results are not directly comparable to Geekbench 6 scores: The 2024 iPad Pro is a great deal speedier than its predecessor. The new tablet did better in our Adobe Premiere test as well, albeit not by a great deal.
How about video games? Even if it falls short of the 60 frames per second that most gamers like myself want, Resident Evil 4 runs really smoothly. The game appears to run at a consistent 30 frames per second, but I was unable to verify this. Though not excellent, it is playable. We finished by running the iPad Pro 3D Mark gaming benchmark. Along with scoring higher than the prior model, it produced more frames per second. How iPad games tuned for the M4 processor turn out excites me.
All-day battery life
I was concerned that the iPad Pro's OLED display and stronger M4 processor might shorten battery life before this review. Happily, our testing indicates that the iPad Pro lasts far longer than Apple claimed.
The iPad Pro amazingly lasted for 13 hours and 13 minutes in our battery test, which included continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi with the display set to 150 nits of brightness. That easily surpasses the 10 hours and 39 minutes of battery life offered by the iPad Pro M2, as well as the 10 hours and 10 minutes that Apple had assured.
The iPad Pro 2024 is now the premium tablet to beat in terms of battery life thanks to this amazing achievement.
