For your iPhone to connect to a cellular network, it requires a physical SIM or an eSIM. (Not all models, nor all nations and areas, offer every choice. You can only utilize eSIM on iPhone 14 and later devices that you buy in the United States.) To get a SIM and activate cellular service, get in touch with your carrier.
An eSIM supplied by your carrier can be digitally stored on supported iPhone models. You can power on your iPhone and activate your eSIM during setup if your carrier supports either eSIM Carrier Activation or eSIM Quick Transfer.
Once the setup is complete, you can choose from the following options:
• eSIM Carrier Activation: Get in touch with your carrier to start the process of having a new eSIM assigned to your iPhone. Tap the message that says, "Finish Setting Up Cellular." Alternatively, select Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM after selecting Settings > Cellular.
• eSIM Quick Transfer: If both devices are running iOS 16 or later, some carriers allow you to move a phone number from your old iPhone to your new one without contacting the old carrier.
• Navigate to Settings > Cellular on your newly acquired iPhone, select Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, and then select Transfer From Nearby iPhone or enter a phone number. To verify the transfer, adhere to the instructions on your old iPhone.
• Note: Your phone number will no longer function on your old iPhone after it has been transferred to your new one.
• Scan a QR code that your carrier has provided: Navigate to Settings > Cellular, select Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular, and then select Use QR Code. (You might have to first hit Other Options.) Orient your iPhone such that the QR code displays within the frame, or manually input the information. Your carrier may require you to input a confirmation code.
• Move from an alternative smartphone: To transfer the phone number if it wasn't an Apple iPhone, get in touch with your carrier.
• Use the app of a participating carrier to initiate service: To activate cellular service, go to the App Store, download the carrier's app, and utilize it.
A nano-SIM card can be transferred from your old iPhone or obtained from a carrier.
Note: iPhone 14 and later devices bought in the United States are not compatible with physical SIM cards.
1. To eject the SIM tray, insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the tiny hole and press inward toward the iPhone.
Note: Depending on the iPhone model and your country or area, the SIM tray's shape and orientation will vary.
2. Take out the iPhone's tray.
3. Set the SIM down on the tray. The proper alignment is indicated by the angled corner.
4. Reinstall the tray inside the iPhone.
5. Carefully enter the PIN when required if you have previously set one up on the SIM.
Caution: Never attempt to figure out a SIM pin. If you make a mistaken estimate, it could lock your SIM permanently, preventing you from using your carrier's cellular data or making calls until you receive a new SIM.
On an iPhone model that is compatible, you can change a physical SIM to an eSIM if your carrier allows it.
Select Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM from the Settings > Cellular menu, then select the phone number using a physical SIM card.
Select Convert to eSIM and then adhere to the prompts on the screen.
Here are just a few of the numerous ways Dual SIM can be used:
• while making personal calls, use a different number than while conducting business.
• If you visit a foreign nation or area, consider adding a local data plan.
• Maintain different data and voice plans.
Note: Your iPhone needs to be unlocked in order to use two separate carriers.
You can use the following to set up Dual SIM:
• Available on iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and iPhone 14 and later (bought outside the U.S.)
• One physical SIM and one eSIM
• Two eSIMs; iPhone 13 and later; iPhone SE (3rd generation);
Note: Some nations or areas do not support eSIM.
Select Settings > Cellular, then confirm that there are two or more lines (below SIMs).
Toggle two lines on by tapping one, then select Turn On this Line.
Additionally, you can modify options for SIM PIN, Calls on Other Devices, Cellular Plan Label, and Wi-Fi Calling (if your carrier offers it). The label can be found in Contacts, Messages, and Phone.
Select the cellular data default line by tapping Cellular Data and then a line. Allow Cellular Data Switching must be enabled in order to use either line, depending on availability and coverage.
If data roaming is enabled and you are outside of the nation or area that the carrier's network covers, you can be charged for roaming.
Select the voice call default line by tapping Default Voice Line and then tapping a line.
Keep in mind the following when utilizing Dual SIM:
• In order for one line to take calls while the other is on a call, that line needs to have WiFi calling enabled. iPhone uses the cellular data of the line that is in use for the call to receive calls on the other line if you receive a call on one line while the other is in use for a call and there isn't a Wi-Fi connection available. There can be fees. To receive the call on the other line, the line in use for the call needs to be allowed for data use in your Cellular Data settings. This may be done by setting Allow Cellular Data Switching to on for either the default or non-default line.
