CANVAS WEAVING

To mount your chain, make a slip knot and place the loop in the nail of your choice at the bottom of the loom, depending on the width of the weave you want to make. Bring the thread up to go around the nail opposite at the top, and go down again to pass it through the next nail at the bottom. Carry out this operation on the width of your choice.

Once the loom is in place with the warp thread, you can start weaving the weft thread. Cut a length of yarn and thread your tapestry needle. To start weaving, wrap the end of the yarn in a loop as shown below. It is not necessary to tie a knot, because it will be visible and the weave must remain flexible.

Weave a thread above, a thread below until the end of the row. For the return, reverse the passage of the thread: if the previous thread was above, pass below, if it was below, pass above. It is a plain weave.

You can use a comb to tamp down your yarn; doing it with your fingers also works when the wool is thick.

To stop your yarn when you don’t have enough left or to change color, make the same loop as at the beginning of the last warp yarn on the right or on the left, it doesn’t matter. Stop your thread at the bottom of the loom by making a double knot around the nail.

KNITTING MACHINE

This tricky little mechanical device has many names (knitting dolly, tricotin, knitting machine, manual spool knitter). However, learning its secrets will allow you to make all sorts of pretty accessories.

SUPPLIES

•  Knitting machine and its weight

•  Medium-weight knitting yarns

•  Wool needle

•  Scissors

GENERAL INFORMATION

All smooth and medium-weight yarns, corresponding to knitting with #4 and #6 US (3 and 4mm) needles, are suitable for machine knitting. Yarns with rough edges are not suitable; mohair hair or fancy yarns, such as tweed balls, get caught in the needles and cause the stitches to jump or block the work. And if they finally “pass," they disappear in the stitches.

Directions

Make sure the needles are open. Thread the wool through the two notches, then through the center of the knitting machine. Leave about 4" (10cm) of yarn at the bottom. Turn the crank always in the same direction by threading one needle out of two: thread in the 1st needle, thread behind the 2nd, thread in the 3rd, 3 turns and hang the weight. Then turn the crank.

Caution: do not crank backwards, otherwise the knitting will unravel. To add yarn or change color, just tie them together.

To stop: turn the crank without thread in the needles so that the knitting machine comes off. Cut the thread, thread it through the wool needle, and pass it through the four loops that have been released. Tighten, stop with a few stitches. Slide the needle inside the knitting machine, take it out a few centimeters, and cut the thread flush. Stop the starting thread in the same way.

For the nostalgic

In the past, the traditional knitting machine was made from a spool of thread topped with four nails. After passing the thread through the center, from top to bottom, it was wrapped around each nail, then the stitches were “knitted” one by one with a needle.
