I dedicate this book to everyone
longing for fulfillment and
hoping to find their purpose in life.
„It’s about the encounter with the potential
inside of you and why you are on this planet!”
“Where your talents and the needs of the
world cross, there lies your calling” – Aristoteles
Preface
This book was inspired by my firm belief that every individual possesses a unique calling in this world. We should not only strive to uncover our life’s purpose, but also wholeheartedly embrace and live it to its fullest potential. Finding and pursuing one's true calling leads to a satisfying career and a life of overall fulfillment. As a career coach, I have observed many individuals experiencing immense dissatisfaction in their careers. Years ago, I found myself in a similar situation.
Frequently, people lack a clear vision of their genuine desires in life and fail to fully understand their true identity. They may even devote their efforts to fulfilling the expectations of their parents and friends, but never truly discover themselves. Moreover, numerous fears accompany us as human beings throughout our lives, such as the fear of change, failure, others’ opinions, even the fear of success and life itself. Consequently, people tend to remain in their comfort zone. They continue working in familiar jobs where they feel secure. However, deep down inside, they sense that their job or environment negatively affects their wellbeing. Sometimes, it’s only when individuals experience various ailments that they become aware of how unhealthy their lifestyle has become.
The writer, Ulrich Schaffer, once described the following interesting dialogue between the soul and the body: "Go ahead," the soul says to the body. "He doesn't want to listen to me! Maybe he'll listen to you." The body responded to the soul: "I'll get sick, then he'll have time for you."
Based on my personal experience as a coach and seminar facilitator, I have come to realize that finding your calling is an achievable endeavor. It requires that we regularly reflect on who we are and that we follow the many signs given to us along our path through life. We must become conscious of all aspects of ourselves and be willing to make course corrections if necessary. In this book, I aim to share my experiences and insights while providing guiding principles for uncovering and realizing your own calling. Embarking on this exiting journey can be increasingly rewarding. However, it’s important to note that there is no secret formula or one-size-fits-all recipe for achieving your desired outcome. The purpose of this book is to raise awareness of effective tools and approaches that facilitate the process extending beyond finding your dream job. It involves deepening selfawareness and embracing a fulfilling and meaningful life, one that is imbued with purpose and inspiration. My hope is to instill in you the courage and perseverance necessary to pursue your dreams and follow your destined path.
This is my debut book. Initially, I pondered whether the world truly required another book on finding one's calling. Yet in view of my extensive experience and personal journey in discovering my own calling, I feel compelled to share my insights with you, as I am confident you will derive great value from them.
Soon after my birth in Germany, my parents and I moved to the USA. I am extremely grateful for having spent my entire childhood and adolescence there, as it greatly broadened my perspective on life. My mother was from the Lower Franconian Region, which is as German as it gets. Like many Americans, my father had a migration background. He immigrated from Suriname (South America) to the USA at age 16. When he was in the military he served in Germany and, shortly before his discharge, we moved to New York City where the American chapter of my life began. Four years later, we moved to Alexandria, Virginia, and then to the capital, Washington, D.C. I was about 10 years old when we relocated to the beautiful Pacific Northwest near Seattle, Washington. Needless to say, I attended American schools, also beginning my studies at Central Washington State University. Unfortunately, I was not bilingual, as English was the only language spoken at home.
My father exhibited a highly authoritarian nature making decisions without consulting anyone within the family, including my mother. Often saying, "This is the way I want it to be”, discussions were forbidden. This is not really unusual in itself. Many of us have experienced an upbringing where one of the parents dominates and believes that they must have complete control over everyone and everything. In my case, this dominance led to my inability to freely make my own decisions. My dreams and visions could never really unfold. Please don't misunderstand me, as I am not giving blame to my father. I believe that most people are only as good as their own background and upbringing allow them to be in their parenting roles. However, an authoritarian parenting style can have severe effects for a child and, subsequently, impact their development into adulthood.
Upon my arrival in Germany at the age of 20, it became necessary for me to learn the German language at the Goethe Institute as a prerequisite for continuing my education here. After completion, it became clear to me, I lacked clarity about my life’s direction, including my academic interests. I decided to enroll for business administration because I expected it to offer me the broadest field of career opportunities later. Even after my studies, I found myself without a clear vision for my life and missing a defined career goal.
Three months prior to completing my studies I met my wife. We soon discovered that we were expecting our first child. Considering my family circumstances, I prioritized job security leading me to accept a government job offer at the German Employment Agency. At first, I found the job very interesting and exciting. After taking part in an internal trainee program, I was hired as a career consultant. My main responsibility was advising engineers and scientists on the job market and other job-related issues, which also included supporting them in job search activities for suitable employment. It was only later that I realized how crucial this stage of my career was in finding my own calling. I had an 18-year tenure as a career consultant and job placement officer working as a civil servant under a lifetime contract. Obviously, this made my father very happy. After all, he no longer had to worry about his only son due to the lifelong job security that the government offered. And indeed, this job eventually felt like a life sentence in prison for me. Today, even the term "civil service for life" makes my stomach turn. You may wonder why, after all, I had a secure job. It would have been very difficult for my federal employer to terminate my contract based on the existing federal labor laws for government employees in Germany. While the job itself was captivating, I endured significant challenges due to the rigid structures and excessive bureaucracy in public service. In particular, I found it very difficult dealing with the "civil service mentality”. I was just never that type of person. Furthermore, my different mindset, influenced by my upbringing in the US, made me stand out in this agency like a sore thumb. My personal appearance and my American approach towards customer service topped it off.
Over the years, I faced the challenge of exploring alternative career paths and finding opportunities that aligned with my unique personal and professional background. How could I integrate my experiences from the USA and Germany into a new career? Following a period of intense self-reflection, I discovered my true calling. Amidst my midlife crisis, I made the bold decision to step outside of my comfort zone. At 42 years old, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, establishing my own business in coaching and seminar facilitation. Nurturing the growth of high-potential individuals in their professional development became my true passion and purpose.
In this context, it is interesting to mention the so-called “Seven Year Cycle” or the “Seven Year Itch”, which suggests that individuals undergo significant personal and psychological changes ever 7 years, marking new phases of growth and development. From birth to the age of 7, we transition from infancy to early childhood. At approximately 14, we enter the phase of puberty followed by adulthood at 21. Many individuals start their own families by the age of 28, and by 35, we typically settle into established careers. However, when we reach the age of 42, we begin to reflect upon our life choices and question whether our current path aligns with our aspirations, particularly in terms of our careers.
This introspection can often lead to profound shifts, both in our personal lives and in our professional pursuits. This is exactly what occurred in my case, as I decided to leave my secure government job and start my own business.
Drawing upon my skills and expertise, I crafted seminar concepts, both in German and English, covering a wide range of subjects including self-presentation, navigating career transitions, career counseling, effective self-marketing strategies, and enhancing effective presentation skills. I also incorporated intercultural elements into my workshops. My target groups included international companies, universities, management consulting agencies, and educational institutions as well as individuals who were interested in furthering their personal and professional growth.
Thanks to my professional network I had the opportunity to forge a new path while working at the Employment Agency. I reached out to a training institution I had collaborated with in the past and shared my vision with them. The CEO was thoroughly impressed and offered me my first freelance contract with their organization. He assured me of a consistent workload for the initial two or three years, providing a solid foundation for my business’s startup phase. With this promising opportunity at hand, I had no valid excuse to hesitate.
