Writing a book is challenging and more rewarding than I could have ever imagined, but a third book is still quite a task. None of this would have been possible without my wife, Julie. She stood by me during every struggle and all my successes, including many nights of writing. She was someone I could talk to about my book and how things were going. She always pushes me, and I will be forever thankful for this.

I’m eternally grateful to Matt Crape and Rick Vanover from Veeam, who took the time to do a technical review of my third book and all of my chapters when they didn’t have to. They were great at suggesting changes or edits and even contributed to chapters where necessary. I genuinely have no words to thank them for this amazing selflessness to help a fellow Veeamer on a third book about Veeam.

You will learn about the new database option to replace SQL Server: PostgreSQL. We will also look at the new per-VM backup chains, which will make management simpler and easier for troubleshooting. Finally, we will look at some new Linux features, such as a specific selection option for hardened repository and using Linux as a proxy.

Chapter 3, Scale-Out Backup Repository – What’s New, covers the scale-out backup repository (SOBR) and what Veeam has added to make management easier. You can go directly to object storage now as well as have multiple buckets per SOBR tier. We will also look at VeeaMover, a new technology that allows you to move backups within a SOBR extent to another extent or even a new SOBR. We will also look at VeeaMover to move VMs between jobs, and jobs between repositories. Lastly, we will look at the new Rebalance option for the SOBR, which helps manage capacity between the extents as well as exporting from a SOBR in the Capacity or Archive tiers.

Chapter 4, Tape Server and Other Enhancements, covers the tape server and other enhancements within Veeam Backup & Replication v12. You will be shown how you can now have the tape server role on Linux as well as how sending from object storage to tape is now an option. We will look at NAS backup to tape, as well as better LTO9 support. Understanding the best practices and optimizations for Veeam installation

Installing Veeam Backup & Replication v12 is a straightforward process. Setting up Veeam, if not done right, can lead to components not working correctly and poor performance, among other things. It will protect your data and environment with minimal configuration when set up correctly. This section will go through the installation process and touch on the best practices and optimizations for your environment.

Installing Veeam Backup & Replication v12

Before installing Veeam Backup & Replication v12, you must ensure that you have a server deployed, based on the Technical requirements in the preceding section, with enough disk space for the installation.

Note

Veeam will configure the default backup repository on the drive with the most available disk space, whether it’s the OS drive, Application drive, or Catalog drive.

As a best practice for installing Veeam, the disk layout should be similar to the following so that you can separate components to ensure the best possible performance:

OS drive: This is where your operating system resides and should be used only for this.Application drive: This will be your application installation drive for Veeam and all its components.Catalog drive: Veeam uses a catalog that can generate
