Look, said Grandpa,

The cat spied Grandma,

Stealing the milk jar,

Hiding it not far.

Since then, wandering,

Stopping pondering,

It is rambling, always gambling,

Rolling its dice

With its friend-mice.

But others say over and over,

He is at the Strait of Dover.

Lulling the Strait and dead sober;

Once it’d been a rot robber.

- Oh, dear heart! The Elephant!

Had daily grass, the Elephant!

That was enough for four cows,

Even if they, ate in crowds.

But this great beast never knew that;

Had he known that,

He would desire with all his heart

To give the cows the grass he had.

Had he known that,

He would say that,

He’d have no more of that grass tuft,

Let cows have a whole grass cart;

And for his part;

He’d have the nut,

That Peter had at schooling trade;

In the third grade.

Do you know that today

I laboured hard till midday?

Saying: “Pussy, don’t growl,

But bark and howl,

And never miaul,

Catch the whelps on their way,

Drive them from the roofs away.”

The cat denied my request,

And making a great protest,

It kept saying with no rest:

“Cats and dogs are in chase,

And it’s clear, in such a case,

They can never swap place.”

4

Let’s go and sit on a log,

Spring will come along

Through a misty fog.

We’ll see the dog and the cat,

Having a good and long spat.

So we’ll tell them:

“Oh, it’s a shame!

That being tame,

You fight like beasts,

Shaking your fists.

Living in the same yard,

You have to try very hard

To solve your tiff smart.”

5

Once a bird reported,

There was a sheep distorted.

Every now and then,

It was at the wolves’ den.

The wolves did their best

To please their dear guest.

In the end, there’s no doubt,

The sheep bones were about.
