ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Introduction

With almost 1,25 million inhabitants Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth-largest city in Russia. From 1932-1990 the city was named Gorky, after the well-known author who was born there. The view of the confluence of the Oka and the Volga is breathtaking. There is probably no comparable European city in which one can enjoy such an unobstructed view to the horizon from the centre of the city. At this sight one gets a feeling for the Russian expanse and the size of this country. Nizhny is a large city due to the population, but rather a province, compared to the large metropolises of Moscow and St. Petersburg. This is also shown by the fact that Nizhny is poorly developed for tourism which is particularly problematic for foreigners without knowledge of Russian. This city guide is directed primarily, but of course not only, to people who travel to Nizhny Novgorod for a longer period of time. I lived in Nizhny from 2012 until 2016 and I would like to share my experiences with others, so that you also get to know and love this beautiful city.

Holidays and Celebrations

January 1-5

New Year Holidays

January 6-7

Orthodox Christmas

In the Russian Orthodox Church, the old Julian calendar is still observed, which means that Christmas is not celebrated until January. In the time of the Soviet Union it was forbidden to celebrate Christmas. This changed only with the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

February 23

Day of the Defender of the Fatherland

The origins of this holiday date back to the beginning of the 20th century. It was then the Day of the Red Army. Since 2002, this holiday has been officially reintroduced to honor the members of the Russian armed forces. But in the younger generation it is more likely to be celebrated as a men's day.

March 8

Women’s Day

An important holiday in Russia where women get flowers and other gifts.

Easter

Due to the different calendars, Easter holidays have different days in Russia. However, in the church only the night of Saturday is celebrated with long worship services on Easter Sunday.

May 1

Labour Day

May 9

Victory over Hitler’s Germany

This is probably the most important holiday in Russia and is celebrated with great military parades (see "

Important Information – Georgian ribbon

").

June 12

The Day of Russia

Since 1992 official holiday. Across the population, however, the holiday is of little importance.

November 4

National Unity Day

Since 2005 an official holiday. For Nizhny of special importance, because of the departure of Minin and Pozharsky’s national army to Moscow in 1612, which ended the Russian-Polish war.

December 31

New Year

New Year's Eve is celebrated in Russia like Christmas with fir trees, Ded Moroz (Father Frost, the Russian Santa Clause), gifts and only with the family. On the other hand, the actual Christian Christmas festivity has little significance for the general public. After the October Revolution in 1917 the Christian Christmas celebration was forbidden. The related traditions, however, were moved to New Year's Eve.

If a public holiday falls on a weekend, it is postponed to the next working day. For this reason, holiday regulations are a little different each year. There is usually a long vacation period after New Year and in May. Some working days are therefore changed so it might be necessary to work on Saturday. On public holidays the shops are not closed.

Important Information

AIR CONDITIONING/HEATING

You may be thinking: "Why do I need an air-conditioning system? It's winter half the year!" In fact, the summer can get quite hot, and you will be grateful for air conditioning. However, the air-conditioning system is even more useful in spring and autumn, as it is also used for heating during the transition times to the heating periods. In Russia there are state-controlled heating periods, i.e., the heating is centrally controlled and you usually have no influence on it. This is why you are lucky if you have a thermostat - you can switch off the radiators so that you do not have to adjust the temperature of the apartment in winter by opening the windows. Also, make sure that your apartment is equipped with a boiler, since once a year for a few days the hot water is switched off. The regulation of indoor heating is supposedly based on the outside temperature. Buildings are usually heated from October to May.

CAR RENTAL

The big, international car rental companies have finally made it to Nizhny. You can rent a car from Avis, Europcar or Hertz at the train station and at the airport. Unfortunately, it is often not possible to rent the car in one Russian city and return it in another.

CAR TOWING

The parking situation is precarious in the inner city, as there is hardly any public parking. As a result, towing companies are very profitable. Since there are no traffic wardens, your car is towed away with every offense. It is expensive and extremely time consuming to get your car back. If your car has been towed, call the following telephone number: 417 17 07. You will find out which car lot your car is located in. Write down the address and go there. You will receive a certificate. Then go to the police (Delovaya Street 3) to pay the penalty. Only then can you go back to the car lot - of course at the other end of the city - to reclaim your car. The towing company requires about 2000 rubles. For the taxi ride you should plan about 1000 rubles. The fine is usually the lightest part of the experience.

DOORBELL/INTERCOM

Similar to the mailbox, there are no names on the bell to your apartment. So visitors need to know the number of your apartment. Usually the bell/ringers are next to the main door. Visitors should select the number of your apartment and then press "B".
