My name is Megan. It was August 2013, I was fourteen years old. My mother and I were putting a puzzle together on the dining room table when we heard an abrupt knock on the door. We both glanced at the clock on the wall when my mother suddenly became a little leery saying, “Who could that be at this hour?” It was 9:15 pm as we both ambled over to the door. I watched as she opened it with caution and noticed two detectives standing on our brightly lit doorstep.
“Yes? May I help you?” She asked.
“Yes, Mrs. Slade! Mrs. Rebecca Slade?” They repeated my mother's name.
“Yes, I'm Mrs. Slade. Who are you?”
“I'm Detective Rand and this is my partner Detective Coleman showing their badges. May we come in? We liked to talk to you about your husband.”
“My husband! What about my husband? Is he alright?” She eagerly inquired.
“Well, that's what we're here to talk to you about Mrs. Slade. There is something you should know!” They urged.
“Yes, please come in!” She watched as they ambled in taking off their hats.
“My daddy!” I thought as I shivered, feeling that heavy lump in my throat. I could feel something was wrong.
I stood near my mom avidly waiting to hear their report and when they spoke, my heart suddenly became friable and I could not breathe as my eyes quickly filled with tears. Instantly, I heard my mother's emotional scream and nearly dropped to the floor. I felt so distraught and confused as the detectives immediately tried to console her.
“What happened!!” My mother loudly bellowed.
They concluded that my dad was involved in a hit and run pursuit when the suspect reared a black suburban at a stop light then took off. My dad witnessed the incident, which stirred a fast pursuit that led towards the outskirts of Thibodaux along LaBruin Creek Road when he called for backup. Upon their arrival, they found his abandoned police car about a mile and a half towards the swampy terrain. It wasn't until hours ago, they found his badly mutilated body floating near some marsh and brush, it was obvious he was brutally attacked by a large gator. They were able to capture the hit and run suspect, he had no drivers license, no insurance and there was a warrant out for his arrest. Obviously, he thought he could outrun the police but when they handcuffed him, he uttered how he got away from the big swamp monster with this crazed grimace. They assumed drugs but when they found Officer Slade's body floating in the swamp, they knew what the suspect meant about a big swamp monster.
“Are you sure it was him! My husband, Kenneth Slade!” My mother uttered.
“Yes, ma'am! We found his badge on his body. It was such a tragedy and we're terribly sorry Mrs. Slade.” He handed her my dad's badge when instantly poured tears.
