Book Presentation: A Long Time Coming by Evan Thomas and the Staff of Newsweek

Book Abstract

A Long Time Coming is Thomas’ recount of the epic 2008 presidential campaign as seen through the eyes of embedded Newsweek reporters, who on the promise of confidentiality until November 5th, were given remarkable access to the candidates, their families, and handlers. Thomas goes behind-the-scenes and gives the inside stories to help explain the rise of Barack Obama, the comeback of John McCain, the long siege between Obama and Hillary Clinton, the explosive arrival of Sarah Palin, and the road to victory.

Thomas reveals intimate portraits of self-doubt, insider quarreling, missteps, and press strategy. He analyzes how external forces, most importantly the economic collapse, created an environment making a GOP victory virtually impossible. He also shows how Obama went from being an outsider to a confident leader of the biggest and best-financed get-out-the-vote campaign in the history of American politics.

About the Author

Evan Thomas is the Newsweek Editor-at-Large and has written more than 100 cover stories. His previous books include a biography of Robert Kennedy, and most recently, the New York Times bestseller, Sea of Thunder.

Summary of A Long Time Coming (Evan Thomas and the Staff of Newsweek)

The Age of Obama

The Democratic Party’s success in 2008 is not a straightforward, revenge-of-the-Left drama. There are a lot of opinions as to what it might have been; the dawn of a new progressive era, a time of resurgent liberalism, or a grim hour of redistribution at home and weakness abroad. But all the parallels with the past seem irrelevant to the historical impact of the moment. A nation whose Constitution enshrined slavery elected an African-American president within living memory of days when blacks were denied fundamental human rights, including the right to vote. Regardless of politics, Obama’s victory is a redemptive moment in the life of a nation for which race has been called, simply and starkly, “the American dilemma.”
