Throughout our history as a nation, we have faced challenges and turned them into opportunities. Today, the United States is confronted with many problems, including the situation in Iraq, terrorism, poverty, injustice, and racism. Kennedy believes “we must face these problems without fear and with honesty and reason.” He asserts that today’s leaders, unlike President Lincoln, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and President Kennedy, are unfortunately not looking at these challenges “directly, openly, and honestly.” Our democracy is in “disarray.”
Kennedy believes that we need changes in leadership to do what is necessary in facing down these challenges and making the United States a stronger and better place. In America Back on Track, he offers his plans for how these challenges should be met.
Edward Kennedy has been a member of the U.S. Senate for more than four decades representing Massachusetts. Currently, Senator Kennedy is the senior Democrat on the Health, Education, and Pensions Committee, is a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
Our founders created separate executive, judicial and legislative branches of the federal government. They did this to ensure a system of checks and balances so that no one group or individual would gain too much control over the country.
That system, which has worked so well for so long, is being challenged and undermined. The founders created each of the branches with different abilities: “the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass laws; an executive branch, led by the president, to implement the laws; and a judicial branch, led by the Supreme Court, to resolve disputes about the laws.”
In spite of this careful design, the executive branch is currently gathering more than its share of power. “And with both houses of Congress controlled by the president’s party, there is far too little oversight and far too few attempts to rein in extravagant exercises of power.”
