Book Presentation: Born Digital by John Palfrey and Urs Gasser

Book Abstract

Today’s generation of young adults and teenagers have grown up with the Internet and digital technologies. These “Digital Natives” are changing the world irrevocably in how they relate to information, media, entertainment, politics, and culture. Their ways of learning about and experiencing the world are fundamentally different from the previous generation. These Digital Natives face a rapidly changing social landscape where unprecedented amounts of information will be stored about them throughout their lifetimes. Likewise, they have access to staggering amounts of information – and the growth rates of both phenomena are rapidly increasing. Born Digital examines the social and technological forces surrounding the Internet and its effects on the social, educational, psychological, and professional development of Digital Natives and the world at large.

Summary of Born Digital (John Palfrey and Urs Gasser)

Dossiers and Privacy

Information is gathered electronically about a Digital Native even before they are born, continuing throughout their lives to a staggering degree. Today’s Digital Natives will face enormous quantities of digital information stored about them, both information of their own creation and choosing as well as informational lies out of their control. For example, beginning with the sonogram and mother’s pregnancy information, once a baby is born her statistics are stored digitally by the hospital, health insurance agencies, and the state. Well-meaning relatives may post baby pictures to a photo-sharing website and write about the infant on a blog or social networking site. Once a Digital Native comes online themselves, their self-published information, such as their online profiles, greatly increases the information people have on them.
