Book Presentation: Buck Wild by Stephen A. Slivinski

Book Abstract

Buck Wild is Slivinski’s critical analysis of the Republican Party and how its abandonment of limited government principles betrays the very foundation of the party and threatens the future of the country. Slivinski believes that what used to be one of the biggest reasons voters supported the party – less government and more individual freedom – no longer exists.

The book is written as a historical review of change within the Republican Party and reveals how and why Republicans, not Democrats, have become the biggest spenders in Washington, abandoned the principles that put them in power after such a long drought in Congress, betrayed taxpayers and fiscal conservatives and planted the seeds for the undoing of the party.

Summary of Buck Wild(Stephen A. Slivinski)

The Fight for Limited Government

In May 2004, a small band of Republican Congressmen met to discuss the fiscal profligacy that characterized the modern GOP. The Republican Study Committee was formed in 1973 by conservatives in the House who wanted to declare their independence from fiscally irresponsible President Nixon. At that time, they met in ornate rooms in the Capitol building or the Speaker’s office. In May 2004, they met in a basement like a band of insurgents.

This is what it means to be a fiscal conservative in Congress these days, alone against the President and most of the Republican Congress who have embraced Big Government and expanded the welfare state beyond the dreams of even the most starry-eyed liberal Democrat.
