Book Presentation: Bushworld by Maureen Dowd

Book Abstract

Bushworld is Maureen Dowd’s scathing observations of everything Bush-related, from the family beginnings to the 2004 election. Through popular movie references and regal titles and terms, she portrays an administration overloaded with macho men determined to make America an Empire.

The book is written like a daily journal dating back to the early ‘90s and details Dowd’s view that this administration’s choice to ignore experience and common sense has led the United States into an era reminiscent of Watergate, Vietnam or even a return to the Cold War.

Dowd sees Bush as too dense to understand that he was no more than a patsy in the hands of Cheney and Rumsfeld who influenced him to fulfill their dreams of a military superpower and world empire feared by the rest of the planet.

About the Author

Maureen Dowd is an award winning columnist for The New York Times where she has covered six presidential campaigns. Dowd wrote a popular column titled “On Washington,” before moving to the Op-Ed section where she received a Pulitzer Prize in 1999 for her commentary on the Clinton impeachment.

Summary of Bushworld (Maureen Dowd)

The Bush Dynasty

The Bush family is a study in family psychology only heightened by the “Freudian Tango” between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. Bush 41’s presidency was more about the pleasure of being President than actually doing anything. The Cold War was over; no need to think about programs or plans. His disappointing re-election campaign faltered because he never connected with the people and was reduced to suggesting that they should vote for him because Clinton is a bad guy. He never understood that the people originally elected him because they wanted more Reagan. He was determined not to be what he viewed as a packaged president, insisting on being his own man.

On the other hand, George W. wanted to be more like Reagan than his own father. He was never expected to be the one who stood out; always considered the frat boy with a short temper. A good guy, but nothing resembling presidential or gubernatorial material. His quick turnaround from black sheep to boy king took grit and discipline. His choice to make this transformation - becoming the screw-up son who was now the son who fixed his father’s screw-ups - caused more than a few tense times within the dynasty.

When he entered the national stage, George W. made sure to remind the world that he was different from his father. A few key comparisons:

Bush 41 was a blue-blooded Yankee whereas Bush 43 is a red-blooded TexanBush 41 was a New England centrist whereas Bush 43 is a southern conservativeBush 41 was flexible whereas Bush 43 is notSome comparisons he wasn’t so quick to point out:
